Why does Buzz Williams get to stand five feet on the court when he's within just a few steps of the ball? That has to be incredibly distracting to look over and see the coach just a few feet away from the play.

Not sure if it's distracting or not, but what's the point of having rules in college basketball if they're not going to be enforced? Beating a horse, I'm sure, but how can any of these officials take a paycheck in good conscience? It's not like they're blowing difficult calls - they're just choosing to ignore certain rules wholesale. I can't understand how a supervisor of officials or an NCAA supervisor can't view game film and decide that there's something very wrong with the game.

JOC, I posted something about this the other day, but it absolutely drives me BONKERS when the refs allow coaches to come out on the floor, or be out near midcourt way past the coaches box. I've always hated that.

In the Providence game, there was a play where they scored, and Cooley was easily five feet out on the court shouting instructions. Meanwhile, the ref strolls right past him without even so much as a glance, let alone a warning or gesture to get off the floor.

Can't stand when coaches are allowed to do this.

This has driven me nuts the last two games too. I think there was a point in the first half where he was on the court doing jumping jacks and I thought he was going to knock the ball out of our players hands. The guy is a menace, they need to sit him down.

Agree completely and also was saying the same thing during the Providence game. I'd love to see someone intentionally (but not look so intentional) run over a coach or bounce a ball off his forehead while the play is going on and see what happens.

I remember Mike Jarvis doing this all the time when the Erik Barkley St. Johns teams were visiting the dome and I was a student. So obnoxious.

You mean when Buzz stood 10 feet away from our guy during an inbounds? He could have swapped spit with him. I have never seen a coach stand on that end of the bench near a baseline inbounds before.

Sounds like a job for bad Scoop

Someone else noticed it in the chat room, but on one timeout call that dude was about 4 feet from the center of the court near the foul line before the officials granted him a timeout. I've never seen any coach that far onto the floor during gameplay.

A few years ago the NCAA added a stripe on the sidelines which was intended to limit how far a coach could wander towards the scorer's table. It's interesting that they don't impose limits on a coach entering the field of play, so to speak. Until they do, Williams is going to push the limits as far as the refs allow him to. I thought the previously-mentioned "jumping jack" episode was particularly egregious - Williams would probably claim he was just trying to get his player's attention, but hid antics took place within a few feet of our player with the ball, which has got to be incredibly distracting.

I used to admire Marquette and Buzz for their tenacity and gritty play...now its just beyond annoying.

definitely probably out of the box but curly does coach his ass off every night.

A few years ago? I thought they've had that stripe since the early 90's.

Gotta pull the Jason Kidd move and run into him when he's on the court.
That was my first thought, too. It's a savvy move.

I have to wonder if the refs give the coaches a little leeway when they are in a loud environment trying to communicate something to their players.

If I was an opposing player I would make it a habit of running into him full speed whenever the opportunity arose.

Another one that kills me are these teams that grab the chairs, and conducts the timeout in the foul lane. That needs to end too.

Never understood why they do this, but after being at NC State game and watching the students literally standing up and leaning into our huddle on the bench screaming like crazy while security guard stands there picking his nose watching I understand why they do it on the court sometimes now. I do think the foul lane is not necessarily though.

Where is Derek Brower when you need him?

First time I remember seeing it was in 2003 when Rutgers was here under Gary Waters.

There's an easy way to fix it as an opposing team. Every time the opposing coach does it, have a player run into him. Every time. The refs will have to call it.

But I agree with most of you. Why have a rule if you're not going to enforce it?

Buzz was on the court when they were pressing and triche brought the ball down his side I wish someone would have barreled into him. have to be a tech on the coach. Crowd was actually chanting get off the court. Higgins waved him back once then didnt pay attention to him the rest of the game and he was even worse.

Looks like he just missed getting Triche's shot from behind.

"Marquette's extra defender!" I'm sorry that this is nearly a day after the last post in this thread but I didn't want to start another thread. I was furious during the game about Buzz being on the court but I let it go. That's until I saw the picture associated with this si.com article:

I mean, C'MON!

What a scumbag. It wasnt more than two weeks ago that he shot a 3 pointer after the ball went out of bounds near him. Oh...and he didnt even get a delay of game technical.

Juco coach, juco players. This is what happens when the in-laws lose their house and move into your basement. And more relatives are on their way (SMU and Houston). Time to sell the house and get the hell out.
