Can we have a nice civil chat about “Cuse”?

We need MORE nicknames, chants, cheers and songs, not less.

We have great fans but we a turrrible at that stuff. Straight up embarrassing really.

Cuse, Orange, SU, bring em all on. And more. Much more.

Yes def need a Who’s House ...Our House chant at the Dome....

I ask that way, because I’m sure this could tick many off. But I’m also sure there must be some on my side. (Can we have this on the basketball side too?)

We’ve been talking a lot for years at work about this, and I feel this is the best place to further the discussion.

Where the heck did “‘Cuse” come from? Was it someone lazy? Was it an attempt to have a similar nickname to ‘Bama, ‘canes, ‘noles, etc? It is a trademarked thing with the university, and quite honestly it makes my skin crawl. (Isn’t it nice to have a great football season so we can talk about petty stuff like this?)

What exactly is “Cuse Mode”? When that shirt came out I thought “c’mon Nike, you can do better than that!”. I will not spend a dime on merchandise that uses the term.

When I see a close up of the cheerleaders on a broadcast and one says “let’s go ‘cuse!” I just want to die inside. God forbid they have a microphone in the middle of the field. What is the back story on “Cuse”? Please enlighten me.

Forgive me if you prefer “‘Cuse”. And if that’s you, can you agree that it would be nice to be more uniform as a fan base?

I’m a firm believer that the most acceptable phrase is “Go Orange”. That is incorporated in the good old “let’s go Orange chant”, so no argument there. Orange Nation is great as well.

But I envision a world where we check out at the grocery store and say Go Orange. You hang up the phone, Go Orange. You get the idea. You can’t do anything in Alabama without a “Roll Tide”. Yes I know we’re not Alabama, but we can root for our team with an official phrase. Anyone catch the Auburn “War Eagle” commercial this season? It’s a thing of beauty, well except for all the Auburn stuff.

I walked up the hill this year, and an Uber or Lyft pulled up. A guy got out and thanked the driver, and they exchanged “Go Orange”’s. I couldn’t help but smile, as it was exactly what I wish we had here.

I know for a fact that HCDB feels that the one thing missing here is “our own thing”. A tradition. Like UCLA’s 8-clap. I personally think we’ve made strides this year with Wildhack/ Babers in that regard. The organic “whose house/our house” chant in the Dome is really taking off. I’d like to think every person in town giving a “Go Orange” to each other would contribute to the overall unity of the base.

I just would really like to know others opinion on this.

Look at it this way: Go Cuse is perfect for those days when we dress in Civil War colors and Let’s Go Orange is hard to get out of the mouth.

Keep LGO but add something new. When I was at the LSU game in Baton Rouge last year, their fans were asking why our fans only use the same cheer and the answer is...that's all we have.

Had the same experience at LSU. And could not agree more.

Let’s Go Orange chant is great. But is having one alternative too much to ask?

I’ve previously advocated an “Orange” and “Men” call and answer. It would have the double benefit of extending a middle finger to the university or Nike or whoever actually axed Orangemen

As long as we’re on the subject, do you pronounce ‘cuse as ‘cyooss or as ‘cyooz?

LOL indeed!

I named one of my dogs CUSE and she was fine with it...it sounded better than Go Orange...I then proceeded to lose CUSE in a divorce and she changed her name to Moose...true story, lol

I'm personally a fan of "Georgetown still sucks, PSU is a cult, and WVU burns couches!"

I know it's a little long, but it rolls of the tongue, and it's guaranteed to never get old.

FYI- this is not some new phenomenon.
40 year alum, have family who taught at SU for a couple of decades more than that.
I/we and most everyone we know, have ALWAYS referred to the Cuse...as the Cuse. Period.

i have always detested cuse.

Cuse is only 4 letters which makes it easier for the athletic department to spell. The last thing we need to have happen is to misspell the name of the university or team on the jerseys after the brilliant nationally televised Boheim debacle.

I think it's a Downstate thing? Kids have been using it forever but it caught momentum with people like Al McGuire and Bill Raftery using it and really became mainstream via Wallace et al. in '95-'96.

Some of the uses of "Cuse" are my favorite (what you said with cheerleaders and everything, "Let's go Orange" is way better), but in general it doesn't bother me.

They have lately been using 8 flags spelling SYRACUSE. A few football games ago during a timeout, the “C” must’ve been out for a smoke break. SYRAUSE.

I was saying Cuse long before I ever knew anyone from downstate. Heck, it was long before I knew hardly anyone outside of my own family.

Lived in Syracuse since I was 8 weeks old moving out here in 1970 from Orange County California. (Thank you mom and dad for getting me out of there) I love it here, and will never leave.
I’ve been attending football games since 1974. I was at the last game at Archbold. The first game at the Dome. Season tickets for basketball from 1983 until 2014. Football season tickets since 1986. This isn’t about the town. It’s only the term I don’t like.

And I got news for you Mr. Assumeyouknowwhoiam. I didn’t even go to college, smarty pants.
Ha! You got me.

I'm not understanding the gripe. I know I don't have to point out that it's an abbreviation, a colloquialism, you know something that the dumb unwashed masses of people do to reduce communication to the comfortable realm of grunts and sighs.

So if the sentiment is I hate being associated with dumb people, I get it.

But c'mon dude. When someone says "Cuse" there's no mistaking the spot on the map they're referring to. Maybe you dont like the way it sounds or whatever, but that's my little corner of the world and I'm proud as hell of it. No matter how people refer to it, I'll always represent.

Think of it this way. It could have been Norfolk. Those poor bastards. But at the same time, there's no way we would ever understand.

We will always be known as the Cuse from now on. People on the media reference "The Cuse".

John Wallace and the '96 squad put "Cuse" on the map for sure.

"Cuse is in Da House, OMG, OMG"
