CBA-Albany vs CBA-Syracuse for AA State championship Saturday at the Dome

Not all kids were recruited to go there, this is true but some from the city were that otherwise did not have the financial ability to pay for that school they were really freaking good. No whining just the facts.
CBA does that for quite a few students that don’t play any sports as well. Just the facts.

fewer kids are “recruited“ that you would think. Far fewer

All the high schools in NYS, (including Long Island, NYC, Buffalo, parochial, etc.) should be part of the same organization, but with separate championships for the public and private schools. Then maybe the public and private school champs could meet in the state championship games.

Cassamento at CBA who was the former Henninger coach that put CBA on the map. He got plenty of the kids in the Syracuse City schools to attend. Guys like Bruce Williams, Lavar Lobdell. Paulus would have gone to CBA regardless just like his brothers before him. That is what started it and the rest is history, the coaches drive it, much like Bruce does now.

Whine about it all you like. There are also a ton of really good athletes that have gone to CBA in the last 20 years because they want to play there and their parents want them to attend school there as well, make no mistake about that. They weren't "recruited" there. Good sports and academics is attractive for parents and student and lets face it the four high schools in the City aren't what they use to be.
LOL. Good for them, and they should play against peer institutions for championships.

CBA Albany VS CBA Syracuse aren’t peer institutions?
It's a farce that either of those all-star teams are participating in the state tournament against public schools. Do something like a federation-type tournament where the public and private school champs can duke it out for all the marbles, if anything. That would be a lot of fun.

One of my funniest high school sports memories is tearing up CBA in baseball in the 00s; my team was not good, but I was a homer away from hitting the cycle... and damn near had one. The CBA coach was trying to talk to me during the game and even came out to try and talk to me one of the times I was on 3rd. Joke was on him; I was a runt playing one of my last games as a senior and not some underclassman he could bring onboard. My coach was livid at how brazen the whole display was.

But yeah, they didn't recruit back then ;)

And it’s technically the upstate ny championship. NYC and LI do not participate…which is on the NYS high school governing board or whatever it is. Always thought was stupid as all other sports include the entire state.

But yeah, they didn't recruit back then ;) They recruit hard on all their opponents and offer free tuition if they can play. They only rose to the top recently as the CNS coach, who dominated as the Henninger coach before CNS poached him, resigned.

Dotterer? Was he the coach then? Not saying it didn’t happen but that would have been out of character.

No idea. Could have been an assistant.

You caught me. I made the story up to prove that CBA really did recruit 25 years ago, as if all of us including yourself were unaware
again you would have to know the coach he would rather play with a group of misfits who never played the game than ever recruit a kid to play baseball at CBA, it simply would not happen, ever. He was a complete character.

i guess it was an assistant then, and he was recruiting you in the middle of a game

Dotterer was the classiest, smartest and wittiest coach around. Affected many lives in the best ways. He coached for the love of the game, and had the pedigree from Dutch!!! Recruiting never crossed his mind. Now CBA football, another story, but when in Rome.

Honestly he sounds like a pretty cool dude and a great HS coach. I didn't know who he was then, although the name rings a bell, probably from the papers back then.

To be clear, I have no issue with CBA. More power to them; I just don't like to see them winning championships against schools that are in a different category than they are unless it's something like a champions tourney. I'd be all about that, especially if it include NYC, LI, and the WNY privates.

I agree as well.

Cuse CBA was also very successful back in the 1950's:

"During his tenure at CBA, Ludovico became on of the most successful high school coaches
in the area. Seven of his teams posted undefeated records and en route to City league championships with the 1953 team being unscored upon as well as undefeated. On three other occasions,
the Brothers tied for the league crown. His teams had a 37 game overall winning streak between 1950 - 1955 and a 38 league game winning streak from 1950 - 1956. Overall under Ludovico, the Brothers won 78 games losing 12 with 3 ties."

And don't forget Walt Patulski:

https://www.cbasyracuse.org/media/dirjrfun/walter-patulski.pdf

"He led his team to a 7 - 1 record and a second place finish in the rugged Central New York Cities League. Walt shattered the league’s scoring record with 23 touchdowns and two conversions for 140
points, or just over 17 points per game. When he wasn’t slashing through opponents lines, he was performing equally as well as a middle linebacker. At season’s end he was a unanimous choice as Fullback on the CNYCL all star team and rated a first team berth at linebacker as well. This was followed by selection as fullback on the all Area team. Then he reached the scholastic pinnacle
when named to the Coach and Athlete’s Magazine All American team in 1967."

Keep a eye on this game. Looks like SU just signed 3 or 4 guys from CBA Cuse.

Anybody from Albany?

By the way, I'm still getting over the flu,. What channel will this game be on?

I'm guessing it's streaming on NFHS Network.

Plenty of public schools have ”recruited” also. I know parents unfortunately who have done it for their kids. They rent apts, give their “aunts” addresses in the district, hire their parents etc and there are a number who conversely were recruited from private schools to attend a public school. My son had an All American teammate at his public school who lived in a different district. My son in Texas has his children attending the district he teaches at but doesn’t live in - they aren’t big athletes either - it’s for convenience and a better academic public district. Many do it for the coaching - public school unions usually require a coach to be a teacher in the district or in the union while the private schools can hire coaches for coaching ability only - parents make choices. Look at the recruits who have attended multiple high schools for their 4 years - private and public.Parents are making the decisions for their kids, whether one agrees or not.
