CBS Hot Seat Rankings

Speaking to just this one point: 73-121 (nearly 8 losses/season on average) since the 2005 season is the reality behind the perceptions. And water is wet.

And yet, I still believe. Admittedly, without much evidence. I accept the reality that is the state of the program because I am a fan. To be clear, I am not suggesting that you are not - I know that you are (as well as articulate, intelligent, of a certain "vintage," and, most likely, good looking). Damn few of us left.

Fair or not, we have "earned" the reputation from the national pundits and the perception that the program barely has a pulse. There is only one way to change that. So, there I will be in my seat for every home game. Believing. Hoping for evidence that may never come. But tempered by all the magic, fleeting moments I have already witnessed as a 30+ years Syracuse football fan. Forever grateful that I was not born a Rutgers or UCONN fan.

I probably wasn’t clear enough that the fact that our fans and the media had real reasons to feel that way offended me...not BECAUSE they felt that way but that there are legitimate reasons for them to have those feelings. I feel offended that we have gotten to that point, although “offended” is probably not the right word. PO’d is probably more accurate.

Thanks for the description of me by the way.

What?

that’s ridiculous, some of the most exciting, dynamic, and emphatic performances in the history of the program
I am speaking about coach P's stale style of play calling...especially in his later years. I am talking late, late 90's into 2000s. I could call every option he was going to run before he ran it. And before long, he couldn't get away with it anymore.

I just don't ever want to see option football again at Syracuse because of it

They have Dino as a 3 (up from 2 last year). I think he should be a 4 or 5. Edsall being a 5 is funny, as if anyone would care.

I'm surprised to see Orgeron as a "4 - start improving now." I know the Covid year was a dud for LSU, but they had their greatest season in school history like 18 months ago.

They’re a tough crowd, but I think the off the field stuff is what led them to a fairly unprecedented 0 to 4 rating year over year.

Va Tech became our doppelgänger who played cream puffs when we were playing the tOSUs, UFs, and UTs (both) of the world.

I always thought of “Beamerball” as feasting on clubbed baby seals to maintain enough health and depth against better competition.

Schiano took Beamerball to a new level 20 years ago but too many people forget (or don’t know) that Frank Beamer mastered the art of program building through feasting on cupcakes.

He did it long enough that nobody remembers/cares and Beamerball morphed into winning with great ST play.

Looking forward to the day SU crosses back over to respectability so I no longer have to contemplate these things.
Here are Syracuse and Virginia Tech's respective strength of schedules during Beamers first decade as their head coach. Higher number is better. Harder schedule in bold.

1987: 0.88 SU, 6.16 VT
1988: 3.28 SU, 5.39 VT
1989: 1.35 SU, 2.91 VT
1990: 2.02 SU, 5.10 VT
1991: 3.18 SU, 1.30 VT
1992: 2.02 SU, 1.70 VT
1993: 0.38 SU, -0.04 VT
1994: 1.18 SU, 2.33 VT
1995: 1.12 SU, 0.46 VT
1996: 2.82 SU, 2.43 VT

Conclusion: the numbers simply don't support the idea that they were playing cream puffs and we were playing guantlets.

clueless

The GRob hire didnt set us back? Ok then.

Benny Hill What GIF

We started to decline starting in 2001. Freeney by himself made that a positive season.
Once Robinson was hired it was almost a death blow. Reason I saw him rated as one of the worst head coach of all times.
Marrone did well but it helped being in the BE and Miami, BC and VT no longer in the conference.
Shaffer hurt himself with recruiting and his assistant coach hires.
DB has improved talent even if not rated higher. He did hurt himself with some of his assistant coaches. Has tried to correct that with the most reason hires.
Penalties and injuries have been a big problem. Same s&c staff so not sure if they have corrected the potential reason for all the injuries.
Penalties may improve with the coaches changes.
DB time management and in game adjustments have been questionable the last couple of seasons. However some of that may have been personal.
Really hoping for improvements this year but like others keeping expectations low.

You can look at historical SOS data, I’ll trust my eyes ;)

Kidding aside, your SOS numbers kinda/sorta bear out my theory as VT was largely crappola its first 2 years in the BE ('91-'92) even though their SOS plummeted. So either the BE was somewhat underrated or their pre-BE Independent SOS was possibly inflated.

I don’t trust historical SOS ratings because I don’t know if they over-weigh an opponent’s ranking.

I expect playing an overrated team (likely due to a high preseason ranking) in Sept would add more to a backward looking SOS.

I’m sure they also factor in opponent’s W/L and that might counter ranking impact but I don’t know how much.

Conversely, I wonder how SU being more frequently ranked in the Top 25 than VaTech (late 80s/early 90s) impacted its SOS calculation.

Did VT get more oomph for being unranked when they played FSU in 1991 because SU was #10 when they played FSU a week earlier?

No coincidence Beamer’s records jumped as his SOS fell; I know that's not rocket surgery but that's the story I'm stickin' to!

(Now , respectfully... STOP DEFENDING BEAMER)

Did Dino even make in game adjustments the last couple of seasons?

Maybe on the defensive side but I can’t recall one game where he switched it up on offense. Some posters are saying 90’s option football was boring and predictable, Dino’s Offense has run 6 plays the last two years.

It did seem like Gilbert mixed it up a little more towards the end of last year, hope that continues

Dino brings more excitement than any coach we have had since Coach Mac. It would be a shame if he were not to be a success at SU. I do not wan tto get rid of this coach,
Do you want excitement or wins? Saban and Bellichick are two of the most boring human beings on.the face of the planet.

Might be my memory, but regardless of coaching staff, it feels like we give up more first downs with 3rd and long than anyone else in country. And it’s been that way for a while. Could be big play, could be penalty, doesn’t matter. Most fans feel great when it’s 3rd and 15, not me

Did anyone else hear Morgan Freeman's voice in their head as they read 007s last paragraph? Agree with the thinking...you gotta believe. Have been a fan for 40 years...still believe they can change direction and be the team like they used to be in the 90s.
