CBS sports bowl projections

Yeah, I'm happy to go bowling but Maryland? Oooof, no thanks. Give us Ped State!

Our game vs ND will determine if we can get into a really good bowl like Citrus or Peach.

BC game winner will get Sun or Music City.

Our offense makes us desirable from the TV angle. 2+ losses and its Pinstripe.

Even though we play ND there the fact that BC has played in the Pinstripe 2 of the last 3 seasons means they will put us there over them if all things are equal. Only problem with the Pinstripe is that is pretty far down the trough for the B1G so we won't play someone fun thats having a decent year.

Lots of season left to be played

Winning out puts us in elite scenario

This is a good point and I would think it would certainly factor into the decision making.
The game is in NYC 2 days after Christmas.

The school that’s in driving distance to the game with a large population of fans already living in the city is going to get an invite, especially if said school has proven that it can (and will) happily travel to the Pinstripe Bowl irrespective of weather.

Playing a game in Yankee Stadium a little over a month earlier earlier won’t change that calculus, especially give our bowl drought and the reinvigorated feeling in our fan base.

Barring something cataclysmic, Pinstripe Bowl is our safety net. We can do better, but we won’t do worse.

Assuming chalk wins out, Clemson's going to the playoff. SU will at least lose to ND. No other ACC team will be ranked high enough for consideration in New Year's Six games, unless ND loses one game. Camping world gets next choice, and that won't be SU. Even with a 6-2 ACC record there's bound to be a 5-3 team that the Orlando based bowl would rather take, and they can do that by following the one win rule, which only applies to conference record. SU likely ends up in the one of the 4 Tier one bowls (Belk, Music City/Gator, Pinstripe, Sun). Of those four it will probably be Pinstripe.

Is there a rule for beating conference opponents? Can they select that 5-3 team over us if we've beaten them?

Pinstripe bowl would be a major puke job if we're better than 7-5. Nobody wants to play in the freezing snow especially considering we play there in 2 weeks.

Why would it probably be the Pinstripe bowl though? Why wouldn't BC be the Pinstripe choice ?

If we are 9-3 we aren’t going to the pinstripe.

And at last here I am on the hill overlooking El Paso
I can see Rosa's cantina below

There's no rule like that. Only the "within-1-win" Rule. If you're 6-2 in the conference (just to throw out numbers), the bowl can't take a 4-4 team over you, but they can take a 5-3 team regardless of head-to-head results.

H2H doesn't matter. If a team is within one win in conference they can be selected.
