Central Michigan Week...

Need Trudo badly.
Yes. He is calling out the blocking assignments now, he understands the blocking schemes better than anyone else on the line and his size and physical nature help set the tone for the rest of the OL.

Emerich is still too small to be fully effective. If Rob can't play Saturday, or can and is off his ground significantly, it will hurt us in many areas.

That being said, Trudo has to improve snapping the ball. He has had 3 or 4 bad ones in both games. Estime bailed him out on one where he happened to be in the area where Rob snapped it running out a sweep fake. Eric made a couple of pretty remarkable grabs of errant snaps again Saturday.

Bad snaps from the shotgun should happen at most once or twice a season, not once a quarter.

Scott Shafer said walk-on RG Seamus Shanley has "done a pretty good job" as starter. Was up in the OL room last night viewing practice film.

Shafer expresses continued confidence in his secondary.

Shafer on graduate transfers: "It's a little bit like free agency. If I had to vote... I would probably vote against it."

Scott Shafer is asked to go more in depth on breakdown of CMU QB Cooper Rush. Shafer recites his GPA (3.91) and major (actuarial science).

Shafer: "7 touchdowns is a helluva lot of touchdowns in one game." That's how many Rush threw for in last year's bowl game.

Syracuse coach Scott Shafer is set to kick off his weekly teleconference. Updates to come.

Shafer on CMU QB Cooper Rush: "What a great football player. All of his numbers are just extraordinary."

Shafer said CMU's defense is sound and has a strong front with many returning starters.

Shafer said he was disappointed SU didn't get a penalty call on a rub route. Believe this was when Winfield missed the tackle.

Shafer on CB Corey Winfield: "He's really taken to learning how to play the position."

Shafer said Corey Winfield's vertical is around 40 or 41 inches. That's not new. Just reiterating how impressive that is.

Interesting that Shafer wanted more pressure from a four-man rush. 13/14 of Wolford's big gains were out before four seconds.

Shafer notes Dontae Strickland (KR) and Rodney Williams (PR) as having experience returning in HS. Both are filling in for Philips as 2s.

Shafer on the hybrid position: "I don't feel like there's a huge dropoff." He does note Philips as one of the most dynamic guys on offense.

Shafer: "Erv (Philips) had a very minor procedure. He'll be back in two or three weeks ready to roll."

Shafer called conjecture about injuries "laughable" Surprised by ? as it was asked after Wake.

Looking at the calendar, it appears the USF game (10/10) is a likely return date for Philips. The bye week helps there.

SS on SU's run D: "It was a shame on Saturday. I think we could have totally annihilated them in the run game if not for a couple misfits."

We held them to 46 yards rushing. We have allowed 50 total yards rushing through two games. Id gladly give up another 50 yards there if it beans we don't give up 370 through the air.

Shafer says the team walk through the quad is to let the team look at the campus and gain perspective on what they're playing for

Shafer says the team reflects on what Ernie Davis meant to the team, they walk by his statue and tap the shoe before each game

Love this.

Never leave campus. Win more games, and people will figure out a way to get into the building.

Shafer: "I think Central Michigan's a much better team than when we played them this time last year."

Shafer says C Rob Trudo and TE Josh Parris will be game-time decisions. C Jason Emerich has done well filling in for Trudo at practice.

SS: "Motivational side of things comes from recruiting the right guys. When they hate to lose, you don't need to fill them with motivation."

Shafer: All the things he didn't want to let out re: offense had to do with triple option. Credits RB coach DeAndre Smith for influence.
