CFP Final Rankings for Dec 20

Bama covers easy
I truly believe a good FCS team would score 20 on Bama. That’s my only concern. They are obviously an offensive juggernaut.

They should put Vince McMahon in charge of the NCAA. We’d have a 4 team ladder match for that 4th spot.
This makes more sense than a lot of decisions the NCAA makes.

I'm a fan of 8, with 5 P5 champs + 2 at-large + highest ranked G5 team (if the G5 team meets a minimum threshold like ranked at least 10th or something).

I like 7 better to give a reward to #1. I don't like auto bids for the P5. Why should the P12 team get in this year? Go back to a BCS like formula and auto bid for any conference champ whether P5 or G5 if they are Top 8. Let a selection committee create the matchups.

2020
1. Bama (SEC)
2. Clemson (ACC) vs 7. Texas A&M (at large)
3. Ohio State (B1G) vs 6. Cincinnati (AAC)
4. Notre Dame (at large) vs 5. Oklahoma (B12)

2019
1. LSU (SEC)
2. Ohio State (B1G) vs 7. Baylor (at large)
3. Clemson (ACC) vs 6. Georgia (at large)
4. Oklahoma (B12) vs 5. Oregon (P12)

I think the 5 autobids for conf champs is nessessary for 3 critical reasons

1. Takes subjectivity out of more than half the playoff spots. Do ‘this’ and your in, regardless of what pundits/committee think. We’ve seen multiple times in multiple sports where the team that wins the final trophy was not a top 2-4 favorite going in.

2. It is very hard to truly compare conferences (weak or strong) when there is so little inter conference games. This neutralizes that issue but still allows 2-3 additional spots for deserving teams in potentially ‘tougher’ conferences

3. MOST IMPORTANTLY it keeps interest in college football national. Without the benefit of tools used for competitive balance (salary cap, resource limitations, draft vs recruiting etc) then there needs to be some way for the cyclically weak areas of the country to still be relevant to those fans. Otherwise we will be left with a sport that is only relevant in small south/central block of the country which is where are are headed. A niche following hurts all schools/conferences.

I think the guiding principle should be that if a team beats everyone that is put in front of them, they are the champs.

I would give auto-bids to each of the 10 conferences. Conferences could have the power to determine that champion by whatever way they want (regular season only, title game, tic-tac-toe), it's on them.

Then, there are six at large bids based on the top six ranked non-conf champions. Total of 16 teams in.

Seeds 1-4 get a double bye.

Seeds 5-8 get a single bye.

Seeds 9-16 get no bye.

If you are a FBS school that has committed to fund a football program, you cannot complain the system is not giving you a chance. If you are a big boy like an Alabama or Clemson, you're getting a double bye and the team you will be playing in the first round of the playoffs has had to play at least one game already, if not two.

You can add even more advantage for the better seeds by having the games at their home stadiums, whatever you want.

Independents have a shot with six at large bids. That is plenty to afford them a place at the table.

Cincinnati would kick Notre Dame’s ass
You think? So they beat a Clemson team in regulation that was missing the same players that were out against ND and keep it within a couple touchdowns against a fully stocked Clemson?

I guess the one nice thing about this crazy season is that we only have to wait a week and a half between the end of the regular season and the playoff as opposed to the month that it normally is.

I'm having trouble getting my mind wrapped around bowls being next week after just being announced yesterday. Kirk Ferentz tested Covid positive and my mind is thinking he has plenty of time before Iowa's bowl game to go through protocol, but not really. Definitely a weird year.

Can I just say how much it makes me scratch my head that a team like Coastal Carolina, who has been playing D1 football for like 4 years, can manage to put together a roster that produces a ranking that is our high water mark in the last 20 years.

They have a good local talent base to get secondary recruits from.
There offensive was highly effective.
They didn’t play a single P5 team this year.
They did beat BYU and Louisiana which were impressive.
South Carolina was 3-7 in the SEC and they would be a coin flip with Coastal.

The midmajors can get up for these P5 when the physicality of each week doesn’t grind them down and they are only playing a few of them.
Over the course of a P5 conference schedule they would wear down and get injuries.

Far less inherent obstacles to deal with. ;):)

It's rather outrageous that Army (9-2) did not get a bowl bid but Miss State, Arkansas and Kentucky get bowl bids. This bowl tie-in nonsense is ridiculous. UNC should not be playing in a NY6 bowl.
