Class of 2026 CG Ryan Moesch (NY) COMMITTED TO SYRACUSE (4/14/26)

Gerry was confident enough about this kid that he thought he would be Sienas point guard from day 1. So, I really think this kid will be our backup point guard.
Said his biggest attribute is he could read the floor and decide when it was better to pass, to whom or try to score himself. Could really read and understand how to beat the defense in front of him.
Said kid never cared if he scored or teammate, just that someone scored and the team won. Incredibly high basketball IQ.
Like Doty, he said the kid works his ass off to improve and has a killer winning mentality.
At Cushing he averaged 17 points a game and 7 assists last year and just won their conferences player of the year. And it is a tough conference.
His coach said he outplayed every PG he faced both years there.
No one doubts Moesch's talent. His biggest issue getting on the court will be the uptick on the physical side.

6'0 170 won't cut it for extended mins against P5 competition. We can all say oh some offseason strength and conditioning but that won't happen over night.

*However an offseason being guarded by Dual 6'5, Tobiason 6'5, and Doty 6'5 in practice is going to pay off big time for him when the season comes.

He is basically the same size as Reese kid from LSU, who had a good SEC season. Me thinks because he is a local kid with blonde hair many people are writing Moesch off. He played very well in the best high school basketball league. I think he will prove to be more than a capable back up point guard next year. He doesn’t need to be anything more than that.

Moesch seems like the obvious metaphor: it isnt about the size of the dog in the fight, its about the size of the fight in the dog.

I know this means nothing, but he seems like a tough kid.

Not downplaying your point... just seeing the other side of the coin.

And yet, GMac was prolly that size, or lighter, as a Frosh.

IIRC, he did kinda sorta OK against P4 comp that year.

There is no universe or timeline that Gerry was ever 6’2”, even in shoes -
unless those shoes were being worn as a stand-in for Mini-KISS.

I never said I was skeptical that he would be a good player for us. I’m skeptical that it will come “sooner rather than later.” I’m skeptical that he will make the level of impact that Gerry did as a freshman. Why are you so desperate to twist my words into negatives? Where did I say anything about height and weight? Yeah, basketball skills matter. Pretty sure I said that. "...Moesch is a better athlete. But there is more to being a great basketball player than that." Read that again. What part of that is in disagreement with you? Sucks when sensitivity is so high and reading comprehension is so low.

And how is your “take” any less ‘hot?’ Pick a different fight, why dontcha.

I'm happy Moesch is athletic considering, ya know, he is trying to play in the ACC.

GMac was also athletic and he was thick and could play day one without question when we were playing top tier games in a top tier league and help win games. Do people think Ryan could have walked in in 02/03 and did what Gerry did? And Gerry ended up having to slide over to the lead position because Billy was out and he did fine enough there.

Can Moesch shoot? He's small. And, again, just because smaller mid major guys have made a leap, doesn't make it normal. I'm happy to talk about his size. It's not where it needs to be.

Not only is Moesch not the answer this year, neither is Dual. We still need a legit lead guard. GMac came in and shot almost 57% TS% his first year.

People are using single games for application to how we need people to perform over the course of a season..

Also, was that highlight video supposed to make me impressed by Moesch? He used a ball screen up top, went left and airballed a layup at the rim. I saw him get shot over. Everything else is stuff he'll never pull off at this level. He had to jump and almost air mailed a skip pass because he couldn't see over a defender. His handle is also loose.

Come on Mike you’re better than this and I usually agree with you, but this is ridiculous. I posted a full game that’s 24 minutes long. I never said Moesch would be better than Gmac or be the answer next and stated that to Zelda. I said he is more athletic. If you’re passive aggressively coming at me use better reading comprehension. Ffs it’s a recruiting thread.

Honestly, I commented on his post because he was the one everyone was reacting to. To compare him for everyone and anyone in this thread is nuts. GMac was numerous levels higher than Moesch.

I don't see it with Moesch. I also don't plan out my posts that well to be passive aggressive, I promise. I have a dumb meeting in five minutes that I'd rather be posting on the board instead.

The kid is small. There is nothing in that video that wows me. There are legitimate plays in that video that concern me greatly.

Sorry about the tone, wasn't directed at you, it was at the whole thread, honestly. But apologies none the less. I know we're aligned like 99.9% of the time. If we ever cross paths, I'll buy you a beer.

Think a lot of folks are looking at incorrect comparisons for the obvious reasons. Is he gmac, Girard, devo, rautins? Craig Forth? Billy Celuck??

He's not a plus plus athlete like Flynn but he's got some Scoop in his game. I'd take another Scoop Jardine all day as a program guy.

He needs to add strenght, obviously, but what he should do is learn to be incredibly slippery. If you're going to be small in a forest, use it to your advantage. Don't try to be what you aren't. Find creases, apply pressure, get guys drop stepping as you blow by them. Get good at pocket passes, drop offs, etc.

Get quick on lift off for floaters and quick jumpers.

Gerry was 6' 2" (cough cough) 172# as a freshman. Not the thickest burger. Almost the same exact size as Moesch. Moesch is more athletic than Gerry was. Very quick and dunks with ease. Gerry by far the better shooter. I agree the size is not ideal but this kid can play. Some great interviews with Ryan Blackwell from Dan T and Mike Waters over the last couple days and he says that Ryan was his favorite player to go scout.

I put this in another thread but it should actually go here. Purdue’s Braden Smith was a 3-star, 198th ranked prospect who had an immediate impact at Purdue and has become an all-conference player and one of the best PGs in college basketball the past few years. Moesch is actually ranked higher in his class. Painter has been good at finding under the radar players at Purdue. Hopefully Gmac can do the same at SU.

My issue isn’t that Moesch will or will not reach GMAC’s level… he won’t most probably. My issue is this sentence that says Zelda is skeptical that Moesch will be a good player: “If he’s 75% of what GMac was, he’ll be a good player for us. I hope that comes sooner than later, but I’m skeptical.”
I don't think its controversial comparing Moesch to GMAC, I think it is preposterous.

Moesch being half the player McNamara was is a dream scenario. Even though he was ranked 38 in his class by RSCI, GMAC greatly outplayed his expectations from his very first games. He scored 13 in MSG in his career opener. Anthony wasn't the only revelation in that game.

Moesch isn't ranked for a reason. McNamara had an elite skill and it wasn't "intangibles." GMAC was a lethal shooter, full stop. He could come off screens, shoot off the dribble, catch and shoot and pull up jumper. If he was a guy who had teams around him that allowed him to just come off screens or catch and shoot, he might have still made 400 threes, but at a much higher percentage.

Or did everybody just think "JB says things" when he gave his "not 10 #$&^&#^ Games" rant about GMAC?

Moesch might be a good player, he might even be a great player. But if he is even in the same conversation as GMAC after his freshman year, I would be nothing short of astonished. I give the odds of him playing 10 minutes or less per game, with multiple DNPs as a higher probability than him hitting 85 threes and scoring 467 points as a freshman.

I find some of the comparisons we see here silly, like Doty to Rautins (in another thread) and Moesch to GMAC. I suppose its natural to compare players we haven't seen with ones we have.

But Moesch doesn't resemble GMAC in any way other than being short and white.

Being the starting PG at Siena when you are a top150 recruit makes perfect sense. Even getting off the bench at Syracuse is a lot less likely.

Well, let's be honest here. These assessments are often less an assessment of Moesch the player and more an assessment of GMAC the talent identifier.
