Changes are coming

I really believe the way to get special teams back on track is to have your best players filling most of the roles. I think it's a huge mistake to be loading up return and coverage teams with freshman.

Agree. And I'm so very tired of this staff being terrifed of injuries. I mean how much worse could our late season record get anyway? We've been atrocious in November for 3 years, and that's with them doing everything possible to minimize injuries. At this point I'd rather just try to win games in Sep/Oct and hope for the best.

Casullo was let go because of the way he treated players including Rob Long who later found out he had a brain tumor. I'm sure HCDM and BC had multiple discussions about his interactions with players during his time here. Decisions like this aren't made in a vacuum.

But then again, I'm sure none of this actually matters to you since you revell in complaining. Maybe you should get together with some of the other doomsdayers and start your own board. Afterall, misery loves company.

As usual, you miss the point. Marrone made a mistake in the hire. Fine. Find a way to fix the mistake that doesn't embarrass a coach who came to SU with the best of intentions and showed a great deal of loyalty to the program. You can fire someone without being a and without creating enormous enmity...Oh, and by the way, Marrone has shown just how expert he is in dealing with players during the past 3 years, hasn't he? A really stunning record he has created of dealing with players.

Exactly. It's time to look past the potential for injury. It's probably more unlikely that someone will be injured on specials anyways. But when points are involved, and they directly effect outcomes, what's the difference if a guy gets hurt covering a kick or making a tackle on a screen pass? Makes no sense, just play your best guys.

When Syracuse was great on specials in the early 90's it's because our best players played; irregardless of the qualify of the depth. This is college, chances are if your junior or senior gets hurt the back up is an unproven underclassmen. Our depth wasn't so great back then that we could just easily replace Quadry or Kirby Dar Dar either.

Great news Go, while a ST coordinator was a given after the disaster that was our special teams this year your mention of responsibility change is big news. I am still hopeful Marrone get Hackett out of the OC position, Franklin would be a god send.

Hasn't Go suggested that Hackett is going to get MORE responsibility?

This place ought to be a hoot when that's announced.

Could be Scooch, its hard to get a read on what the deal is with the OC position. All I know is that I have see enough of Hackett calling plays.

I said changes were coming, how happy it makes all the experts here, I know which way I'd bet.

If I recall correctly, P studied (may have even visited) what Beamer was doing at VTech and changed his philosophy to match. Play your best players, especially on kick coverage and punt block teams, and have the HC directly involved/coordinate ST. I recall the SU players wanting to be on the punt block team and seeing it as "badge of honor" recognition of their ability and willingness to make a play.

I agree with Phat, we need to get back to that and go all out on ST play, even if it means a starter gets injured.

Sounds like another year of play calling that doesnt match the down and distance and plenty of slants. Great :bang:

Hackett's going nowhere. Sorry to let you all down.

This is a ridiculous argument? It's his fault he gave players more than one chance on certain things and they *cked up again? You think Phil's suspension was the first time he smoked weed? You think Hawkes and Cater were perfect angels?

Contrarily, how about how he helped players like Kevyn Scott and Adam Harris? No? Let's just ignore them because they weren't thrown off the team and don't support your argument.

Seems like an inordinate amount of really good football coaches come from Ohio.

You take things way too personally around here.

So we have extensive bios of Franklin and Mallory. Does that mean they're coming here? Nobody has claimed anything more than wishful thinking.

So no help in recruiting the Atlantic coast on the horizon?

any word on Adrian Flemming? Always thought the kid had good size and potential to do some things

I have no idea on flemming but the kids sure does pass the look test. When he walks on the field he screams WR. I hope he gets a chance next year

I only take things personally when they are complete lies or embellishments that make my school or program look bad.

Marrone didn't need any help this year in making the program look bad. Regression 101...Maybe you missed the season? Some kids like playing for Marrone and some kids don't. Nothing wrong with that- it is a reality of D1 football. But if you think he is universally beloved by the players or if he hasn't made some mistakes with certain individuals then you don't know nearly as much about the program as you think you do.

Then you just contradicted your statement. Thanks.

I would like to see the following

HC Marrone
OC/QB Tony Franklin
RB Wheatley
OL Adkins with Marrone taking more of a hands on approach with this group
WR Moore
DC Shafer
DL Daoust
LB Anselmo
ST/DB Mike Mallory with Shafer helping out with DBs so Mallory isn't stretched too thin
No way with Tony Franklin - he maybe good with mid-conference schools but look what he did at Auburn after the first year:

The Tigers' offense was much less impressive at the start of the 2008 season. Auburn started the season with a somewhat disappointing 4-2 record, losing to LSU and Vanderbilt and having close calls against two struggling teams in Mississippi State and Tennessee. After the first six games, Auburn ranked 104th in total offense out of all FBS teams.[9]
On Wednesday, October 8, 2008, Auburn head coach Tuberville fired Franklin, citing a lack of offensive production from Franklin's spread offense, and noting Auburn's diminishing rank in most of the offensive categories in the FBS.[10] Auburn went on to win only one of the final six games, finishing with a 5–7 record. Some saw this as proof that even though Franklin was able to use his offense in lesser conferences and against lesser defenses, in the SEC where defense reigns, his version of the spread could not work.
