Charlotte Observer ACC Picks

Colorado? Puhleassse... They're going down to Top 10 rated FCS New Hampshire, this year. UNH has half their team from within an hour of campus, and they are still going to crush them. Dino is way ahead of that game. If you are going to pretend he's moving to a "better" job, pick a good one. ;-)

ok since this excercise didn’t work, replace Colorado w Arizona St or Washington St. Standard fare pac 12 teams that are public schools. All I’m saying is if Dino has a monster season we will know quickly if he’s more Tom O’Brien or Paul Pasqualoni in terms of being “all in”

You guys can be really defensive about our school which is a bottom 5 power 5 school past 13 years.

Yeah we can when you bring up fellow crap P5 jobs.
If you said UCLA or Oregon last offseason people wouldn’t say anything.

This isn’t the Big East we aren’t losing Dino to a peer school. I am sure if we go 8-4 would be at the top of a couple of schools lists. However for him to leave it would have to be an upgrade.

Colorado/Washington State/Arizona State aren’t upgrades.
They are going from one rebuild to another and clock recycling.

Dino only goes up not lateral. Your point is a passive aggressive dig at Syracuse and is the mentality that led to hiring Shafer just because people thought he would be a lifer. I don’t care if the football coach leaves every 4 years if we have a lot of success. I don’t want a lifer unless they are actually good.
Cincinnati went from D’Antonio to Kelly to Butch Jones and was successful.
They finally hired a bad coach and it ruined them. Tuberville would have stayed there and he killed the momentum of the program.

You are right. Even if we’re not talking about the media will. A good season and he becomes a “hot commodity”. We’ll know very quickly where we stand with Dino. He’s saying everything right. I’m all in, I hope he is as well.

Yeah if Florida or Michigan State were interested sure Dino could leave. However if we have a good year Dino isn’t going to Kentucky or Purdue type jobs.

The type of job is more important. Taggert left Oregon for Florida State he wouldn’t have left for Virginia Tech or Miami. He moved up.

Taggart is from the Tampa Bay area. He left to come home. I think he would've left Oregon for any of the FL P5 schools.

HCDB being a military brat is used to moving and only a few areas feel like home to him (SE TX, HI and maybe SanDiego). I only think these areas from comments he has made...I could be wrong though.

I'd think we would have to only worry about a few elite schools from SoCal to FL luring him away if he becomes a hot commodity. He just turned 57...and I think only the next 3-5 years is the hiring danger zone.

Let's say he goes 9-4 this year...I could see SU extending his contract mid/late season to help get us through the danger zone.

IMO, whatever “exercise” you were attempting to pull off is immediately obscured by the undertone of pessimism at even a hint of success by this HC or program.
I mean, as SU fans we can’t win for losing. Should we be more worried that we’ll never see a successful season, or that even if we do, our HC will immediately bolt for another job , even a lesser one like Colorado, because of course, we are just not worthy enough to hang on to him.
Look, no one is suggesting it’s all sunshine and puppies all the time, but for gosh sakes, can we hold off on the “Oh what’s the point...even if we win, we still lose” attitude?
How about we start with the winning part first, enjoy that, and then go from there. The dark cloud perspective that hovers over our program is not an accident. It’s almost like a PTSD of sorts. JMHO.

True, and even Taggert is being questioned for his frequent moves. Oregon was a weird move and most have taken notice.

I'm realistic here and fed up with the job jumper mentality college football has become. All i'm saying is we'll know soon enough where Dino stands if he shows success this year. How is this in any way passive aggressive or pessimistic. It's realistic.

I became a fan during the Pasqualoni era of the early 90s. It was a period where a hotshot new coach, with a dynamic offense, found tremendous success at Syracuse University. However, said coach never ever had his agent leak his name to the press to leverage a better job. He could have gone to many other places during that period but was loyal to the Orange. He wasn't a Syracuse resident, didn't go to Syracuse.

I am hoping he does us right but after the Marrone fiasco of declaring absolute loyalty to SU it's hard not to be somewhat cynical about the job merry go rounding.

This thread took such a right turn.

A better job is in the eyes of the coach himself. End of story. Might be better money, might be better facilities, might be more money for staff, might be a better fit with Athletic Director, might be geographic location, might be a passion for rebuilding, and on and on.

Can we get back on topic? This Charlotte Observer reporter is awesome.

Another thing that I would think could be a factor...if you win at Cuse, you’re all set. You’ve got job security, good money, and a program you know you can win at until you’re ready to retire.

Those football factory people are insane. Go 7-6 once and they want you gone.

True, but Jimbo just got some insane amount of cash which Syracuse can never afford. So if you are that good, you can make a whole heck of a lot more money. But with those salaries come insane expectations

If we bump him to $4M and put aside the same for assistants that puts him in the top 25 of the country. Add to that consistent investment in the dome and facilities (nutrition/housing) then I think Dino retires here.

If we don’t give him that, he will leave as he should because he can get more money and have a better chance to win (no matter how good a coach, you need the other investments to win... not over the top investments, but top 25 investments)

No it's worse.

Our team has been irrelevant for 20 years. They have mostly been irrelevant for a similar time frame but have at least finished ranked multiple times within that time span including just 2 seasons ago. I'm as big of a fan as anyone but can at least look at things realistically.

We haven't been in the top 25 (at any time) since what 2001? That's such an amazing stat if you think about it. To do that you don't put together any winning streaks. To wit:

2006/2010/2015 we had 3 game winning streaks
2012 we had a 4 game winning streak

Amazing to think GROB had a 3 game winning streak, Marrone had 2 and Shafer had 1. This results in zero rankings. We haven't had an undefeated month since 2001 .

I think we were a Justin Pugh injury away in 2012. Tough early schedule combined with his injury put us off the radar right from the beginning, even though we had a pretty solid team. We may have been a W away.

But yeah, that’s really our only team that was any good since 2001. Crazy.

Depends on your definition.

They don't have a win like the Clemson win last year. And they went 1-11 in 2012. We've been bad, but not that bad.

I don't see who's not being realistic, lol. Both programs have largely sucked. That's the point of it being a largely lateral fake move.

Agree, why would you want the pressure and BS. Harbaugh is already on the hotseat as much as he was a God on the way in. Dino loves the Cuse area and if things break right he will hopefully be at cuse til he retires. Ya know, the Mrs has a say in it too;)

I can’t wait for Harbaugh to get fired. I think my fiancée (an MSU fan) is rubbing off on me.

I'll admit we are no good. But for Babers to be receiving offers after this year it'd take a heck of a season? At that point are we still a less attractive destination than Colorado? Whom play in a worse conference (IMO) and likely had another terrible year.

I think you just answered your own question. They’ve been mostly irrelevant for 20 years, but were ranked just 2 years ago and now they’d be firing that coach. I’m sure they’ll be lining up on the other side of the Rockies for that kind of administrative patience.
