Beginning of the end or just a guy deciding to go another route in life?
Well, maybe he got a scare. If he did, I don't blame him one bit.Beginning of the end or just a guy deciding to go another route in life?
For the majority of these players they have a passion and love for the game plus it is their only viable source of income.
I think the other viable sources of income is the key here. I don't know much about Borland, but they were just talking about him on the sports talk radio station I listen to in my car, and they were reading his statement and some of his quotes, and he seems like a very smart dude. He's almost got his degree from Wisconsin and is going back to finish it up, so I don't doubt for a second he'll be able to put the million or so he earned this year into investments to start building a nice little nest egg, and actually earn a good living doing something else as well. For the majority of these players they have a passion and love for the game plus it is their only viable source of income.
Retirements like these will put pressure on the NFL and the NCAA to keep working on the concussion issue. Personally, I would be fine with them running around with helmets the size of pumpkins if it keeps players from getting concussions.Bingo.
If anything, just means football players will skew more towards poorer locations...which it basically already does.
I could see shorter NFL careers for sure. 2 contracts and out.
But the whole "sport is dying" mantra. It's not true. NFL and CFB are bigger than ever. Only thing that's going to it will be overexposure.

Apparently, Borland had 2 concussions at Wisconsin and one in preseason.
