Clarion Postgame Thoughts

Complete turn around. It’s actually exciting. These are men playing this year. Immature boys last year
Looks like a well-constructed team. Eddie is really talented. That pass to Carlos the wrap around was beautiful. Carlos looks so good. I mean he is the prototypical PG. Should make most of this board giddy. Bell looks like he is more comfortable and actually put the ball on the floor a couple of times. It's easy to see why Brown left. He would have played a role but no way he was going to take minutes from Donnie. Petar is rock solid, Davis looks very solid had three or four ring out, but you can see he has a smooth stroke and game. JJ looks like the Hs ALL American he is. Choppa is only going to get better. Taylor, Cuffe, the big guy, hopefully Chance and we have a solid group of guys many of which can play multiple roles.

Guess we watched different games. I saw him late on closing our on a shooter at minimum 5 times. If it's not his motor then what is it? He looks plenty capable.

Looked like reaction time and awareness to me. He got caught out of position several times on switches. He seemed good on the boards and decent when having to man up on D but when off the ball and helping it was an adventure

The comments were not agendas, they were the cold hard truth
Really. Well the agenda fellas better tell Red, because he had nothing but positives about Nadeem. Hmmm, I wonder who we should beleive ?

I watched most of the game and agree with all of your takes. Can't always say that. ;-)

One thing I'm wondering if I missed... does anyone recall if Jyare posted up or took the ball inside? I only remember him taking deep shots. I'm not trying to be critical of the young guy - I was just looking forward to seeing this aspect of his game. I'm really excited about Davis. If he can hit some 3s, great, but we will need him to muscle up too.

When I was at practice last week this is where all the emphasis was. Donnie has a lot of work to do on that end. There will be intensity but they need to get better and they will
Couple thoughts

There is more talking on defense than I’ve seen in a long time - mostly Eddie and he really communicated more out there than anyone we’ve had. Literally the guy never stopped talking

Freeman is talented but thinking he didn’t start to send a message that D is important part of the game.

Petar has rediculus calves - sounds weird but they are huge - Phil Mickelson would be jealous (google it). He doesn’t appear to be 6’9” but he has skills and he just seems to really enjoy it here.

Speaking of enjoying it here there was absolutely no pouting and when the coaches spoke the players looked them in the eyes and listened.

So odd not seeing Gmac on the bench

Carlos is small but he is a refreshing look at PG. he plays in your face D and distributes the ball but can also make a shot.

JJ’s stroke is much better

The ball movement is legit - it’s like they know if they pass the ball it might actually come back to them.

We’ll have 5 guys who can score most of the time - when’s the last time we saw that.

Coaches have to be looking forward to coaching this yr vs baby sitting

I only watched the 2nd half, but they made the extra pass everytime on offense. Heavy emphasis on ball movement and getting the highest percentage shot. It feels like a culture is being built that the players know if they don’t make the extra pass and mess up the rhythm on offense they will lose playing time.

I bet nobody had that starting lineup going into the game! No offense to Petar or Taylor but them starting is a pretty clear indication that we were not treating this like a real game, so as fans we have to take everything with a grain of salt.

For me this game was all about the guard play. I came into the game more confident in the frontcourt than the backcourt, and I've always fiund it hard to take much from a D1 front court going against a D2 frontcourt (which are pretty much D1 guards) anyway.

The good news is our starting backcourt was on a totally different level than Clarions. Definite 'men against boys' scenario. Not only did they both put up great numbers, but they both got to the spots they wanted every time, and seemed like they could have had as many points/assists as they wanted.

The bad news is the depth all looked pretty bad. Something to keep an eye on for sure. We need one of Taylor/Moore/Cuffe to step up and we need to be able to play without Carlos on the floor sometimes.

Bell weirdly came off the bench, but when he did play he looked exactly like I thought and hoped he would. Some skill improvement but not looking to give up on what he does so well. The team provided him with plenty of good looks which he converted at a high percentage which allowed him to score a lot of points in a short amount of time.

Because of the practice nature of exhibition games you can usually count on the second game looking a lot different than the first, and you can always count on the real games looking different than the exhibition games. Let's see what we get on the 30th.

It was an interesting game and a very interesting version of Syracuse basketball we’ve never really seen before. No clear superstar. Lots of interchangeable pieces. Not a lot of clear separation between many players. A team full of good players, but not really any “great” players (at least yet, as Donnie will likely be great).

I really liked what I saw from Carlos. Having a true PG is very refreshing. It’s also a bit concerning because I don’t see a clear backup point.

I think Donnie and Choppa are going to be great once they settle down a bit.

I liked what I saw but I’ll still temper my expectations a bit because we beat up on a small, bad D2 team and we really haven’t seen a primary starters and rotation in any form.

Good stuff and some other things to note-

JJ got himself in foul trouble which didn’t give us the longer look of him running the point while Carlos rested

The offense when it ran through the high post with Eddie or Petar showed potential.

The wings all attacked a couple times and looked to make a pass inside or out. So everyone is out there trying to create a little bit.

Taylor has a very quick first step and a decent handle.

I’m very curious to see, if Chance can play what he will bring. If he is able to play and can create he probably is the closest thing to a backup PG we will have even if he is playing multiple positions. Still a massive “if” here but a big one if he is able to be a part of this team. For now though we didn’t see JJ running point and that’s the biggest question mark until someone else emerges.
