Clark Lea named to coaching staff (footballscoop.com)

Interesting...things not settled yet...per scoop.

post removed temporarily at request of university involved

Wow, that seems to be the fastest SU has moved on anything coach related within the last week, lol. Unless it was Bowling Green who caught it and asked for it to be taken down.

Take a listen to that video of Lea that was posted earlier in the thread. The reporter takes a shot at Bullough.

since we play a 4-3 i have never understood why we need 2 lb coaches.

Has Shaffer ever ran a 3-4? We have some NG that could play in that system, don't think we have the LB's though.

No and I highly doubt we ever would under Shafer.

I like the hire. Only thing i kinda dislike is the staff is gettin a lil midwestern oriented but if we win its no problem at all
Conspiracy theorists would say it's all in preparation for our imminent move to the BIG conference;)

Right but we wants best for SU. I dont care about BG. I am sure the BG message boards are pissed because we stole a coach from them.

It's Bowling Green. Boards? More like the Bowling Green message Post-It note. Not plural, either.

was at UCLA with Bullough and looks like he recruited Illinois at Bowling Green.

@ UCLA:

RECRUITING RESPONSIBILITIES -- Los Angeles Valley, Chino, Ontario, Pomona, Texas.
We are rockin' like Janet Reno.

OMG! HCSS hired Bane to coach the LBers!!! I hope he issues all of them those cool face masks. :)
After I have locked you in the Dome and beat the hell out of you for 60 minutes, and made your parents afraid for your safety... then you have my permission to lose.

UGH!!! I just had a terrible thought.

What if the seeming mass exodus of the coaching staff and the replacements coming via the MAC (not that they don't have good to great coaches there) is because the ACC Armageddon scenario is about to be played out?!? And SU's place at the Big Boy table is in jeopardy!!!!

The Sky is Falling, the Sky is Falling.

Can you tell I was born and raised in Central New York? :)

Someone wake me when we have a complete staff. ;)

Cheers,
Neil

Syracuse: Sources tell us Bowling Green linebackers coach Clark Lea will join the Syracuse staff. Lea was a finalist for Linebackers Coach of the Year.

I was going to make a snarky post noting that if you are one of those people who are Dan Conley fans, it does not look good for him to be brought back to the new LB coach.

But maybe not. Maybe SS is going to put together a staff like this:

HC: SS
OC/OL: TBD
QB: Lester
WR/TE: Moore
DL: Daoust
DC/LB: Bullough
LB/DB: Anselmo
LB: Morrison
LB: Lea
LB: Conley

Seriously, how is this going to work?

We have 10 slots. Let' start by assuming Wheatley and Adkins are gone.

If Anselmo stays, he either coaches DBs and Henderson is gone, or he gets moved

1. HC: SS
2. OC: ?
3. RB: ?
4. QB: Lester
5. WR: Moore
6. OL: ?
7. TE: ?
7. Special Teams/Recruiting Coordinator: Anselmo

8. DC: Bullough
9. DL: Daoust
10. LB: Morrison
11. LB: Lea
12. DB: Henderson

Roles:

HC Shafer
OC
QB Lester
RB Anselmo?
WR Moore
TE
OL

DC Bullough
DL Daoust
LB Lea
LB Morrison
DB Henderson

Special Teams
Recruiting Coordinator

If Morrison and Henderson are retained, we have 6 defensive guys on the staff not counting SS. 5 is a lot to allocate for defense. I think it is usually 4 on offense, 4 on defense and 1 on special teams, or maybe recruiting coordinator. Allocating 6 coaches to defense is crazy; not doable. You can run an offense with only 3 coaches. Especially when your HC is also a defensive specialist, not say, also your OC.

If we continue to have 5 assistants focus on defense and 4 on offense, is Anselmo moved to recruiting coordinator/special teams? Does he coach RBs?

The way I see it, either Anselmo goes to offense, or Henderson or Anselmo do not return (the other coaches the DB).

The new OC might also coach TEs. Could see that happening. Believe Hackett did that (he was responsible for coaching the QBs, the TEs and was the OC; it is hard to fill when an employee covers so many roles).

Then the 10th coaching spot would go to the new OL coach. Looks likely one of the young bucks on defense will become the recruiting coordinator. Another will probably take special teams, unless Shafer does it himself like DM did.

TC, I thought Henderson already shuffled off to Buffalo?

I think some on the board assumed he was headed there but to my knowledge, this has not happened. I think Chuck Driesbach rumored to have just been hired by the Bills, might be their new DB coach. They haven't announced what he will be doing for the Bills yet.

Is Adkins history? I thought VT had hired someone else? But Adkins is not on your lists.

Reported to be headed to Buffalo, as is Wheatley though neither has been, to my knowledge, officially confirmed yet.

OMG, that's really unfortunate.

It's one thing for Doug (who's a good coach and really turned this program around) to leave for the NFL. It's quite another for him to leave the program in turmoil and poach half of our staff positions (including the RECRUITING COORDINATOR). That really burns a bridge for me.

Yes I know ... FB coaches are "used" to this, they make decisions every January, many coaches take staff when they move to the NFL, bla bla bla.

The difference is, this isn't business as usual. This is the 'Cuse -- Doug's alma matter. He's leaving us in an awkward situation. Already, our top QB, and potentially our top RB, prospects are casulties of his 11th hour 'career enhancement'.

I'm starting to wonder if Doug is oblivious to all this damage? Was it his mediocre ($1.25M) salary reason for raiding SU's staff and jettisoning its star recruits? Are there not plenty of NFL- capable coaching prospects out there at other schools? And a question for a guy supposedly skilled in 'time management', was the LOI date around the corner a consideration here?

One might even suggest that, if Doug had a more robust conscience (and half a brain), he'd be poaching assistants from FSU and Clemson instead of laying waste to his dream school.

Just some thoughts.

I'm thinking this is what we have at present:

1. HC: Shafer
2. OC: McDonald
3. RB: Wheatley (until the Buffalo thing is official, then who knows)
4. QB: Lester
5. WR: Moore
6. OL/Recruiting Coordinator: Adkins (Until Buffalo thing is official)
7. TE: ?
7. Special Teams: Anselmo?

8. DC: Bullough
9. DL: Daoust
10. LB: Morrison (maybe becomes DE's)
11. LB: Lea
12. DB: Anselmo?

Now if Adkins is gone, perhaps Lea becomes Recruiting Coordinator and we hire an OL/TE coach? Or maybe the OL coach and Moore share duties with the TE's, Moore for receiving and route running and the OL coach for lineplay and blocking?

At least Lea has some southern ties from his years at Vandy. Played there, and got both undergrad and Masters' degrees there.
Wonder what recruiting territory he'll be assigned.
