Clemson Postgame

I’ve had some issues with the coaching before. Mainly issues with the players and lack of smarts, but today was a coaching disaster. Clemson had space, ball movement, wide open shots and layups, perfect in bounds plays and Cuse had nothing. They ran 1 play to start second half. That was it. 3 possessions in a row the ball didn’t go inside the 3 point line. THATS INSANITY. This isn’t a talent problem even though JJ and NG technically lost the game for them, but there is just nothing easy. Kingz not involved offensively at all. Makes no sense.

JJ might be one of my least favorite players ever. He’s unfazed by anything. Doesn’t care if he dribbles it off his leg out of bounds, doesn’t dive for a loose ball. Hes probably the softest player that I’ve seen on a cuse team in a long time. And quite frankly I don’t even think he cares if they lose. He’s made close to a million dollars last couple of years and he isn’t worth it. Good kid sure. Give me a winner and someone with intensity. Donnie at least gets mad and it helped his play today. JJ is awful on so many levels and I’ve had it

I was fine with Starling coming back, because we needed depth and he could be very useful as a 15-20 minute/game bench piece.

Getting 34 minutes today was silly. Not when he goes 2 for 7 with 3 turnovers (and other non-TO plays where he was out of control).

I think we have better talent too, but my fear early in the year( before I knew foul shooting would be our biggest problem) was that we would get big boyed too easily. At the time several posters assured me, this would not be a problem . Today We got bullied in the paint, just like we were bullied by some mid majors. We are athletic, but not big and strong enough. The difference in the game was that we could not stop what they do best.
I guess that's where I am. Were we better shooters? Passers? Defenders? Dribblers? We certainly weren't stronger, tougher, or better coached. Athletic and basketball talent are not the same.

Clemson played as a cohesive unit with excellent passing and offensive sets that create easy looks and we played pick up ball. That, along with Nait and JJ’s miserable offense, is why we lost.

Our margin of error to make the tourney is becoming extremely small.

We have no more margin of error. It’s go find 10-12 wins in a row or bust now.

JJ had four points on seven shots.

Can’t wait to argue who he is after this game.
Red’s insistence on playing JJ is killing the season. He can’t shoot, he doesn’t defend, he’s sloppy with the basketball (3 absolute killer turnovers today), and on top of all that he doesn’t get to the FT line anymore (likely b/c he’s scared he’s going to air-ball more free throw attempts).

If Kingz/Kiyan were getting the majority of minutes at the 2-guard spot, I think we’d be a better team.

Amen. Across the board.

Red has to be toast.

JJ has and will always be a mediocre player, at best. And usually an inefficient and losing player.

Cannot believe the lengths people went to defend him.

But then again we had defenders during JB’s last years, so c’est la vie.

Syracuse isn’t going to pull away from teams and/or sustain long runs because they don’t consistently get good shots off. Too many guys get the ball and try to force it up instead of looking for the open guy. They get baited into bad shots all the time. They will certainly make some, but not enough of them to win games.

I don’t even need to know the name of the whatever offensive set/play they’re trying to run. Just count the shots like cards at the blackjack table: +1 for good looks and -1 for bad ones.

He’s a 20 minute guy that gets more play when he’s hot. He’s not a star guard. It’s just painfully obvious.

Girard was misused for 4 years here because of Boeheim. He also wasn’t in good shape, and played much better at Clemson because he took it seriously. Frustrating all around.
Misused, absolutely. Out of shape, nah, but the was the narrative so many posters went with.

I think that number is 4 if we want to make it not 6.
I’m thinking more about the definitive. 4 more losses and we’d be 13-5 in the ACC, which I think would put us in the NCAAT. I don’t see us getting in at 11-7 unless we beat UNC and Duke along with some other Q1 wins in there.

He was terrible today. I am not as down on JJ as others, but I also don’t believe he should be getting more than 20 minutes a game unless he’s hot. He’s also being forced to play 10 minutes a game at point guard, which he is clearly not good at. The thing that bothers me the most is that he never goes right to the rim, he’s always taking a bad angle bank shot. Avoiding contact. More often than not it’s a miss.

The posters calling for Kingz at the two and Betsey at the three have it right, but Red is not good enough a coach to figure out what’s right in front of his face.

I lurk in this site quite a bit. Can’t remember the last time I read a post that defended him.

Just give up on that, it does you not good.

If we would have made all of our free throws we would have won though. Sooooooooooo, sorta the same thing as winning.

LGO!!!

Yeah, this is me as well. Most of our team is up and down from game to game. It's not really unique to JJ. I think he's been fine for stretches - and at times still seems like the only dude capable of bailing out our "stand around until the defense gets bored offense."

That being said...ugh. Today he was terrible, and we just wouldn't go away from him. Even when he had a straight line drive open, he'd butcher that. He was terrible. Definitely terrible enough to have earned slightly less than 34 minutes of floor time.

Btw, I really want to know the catastrophic events that would have happened if we had bucked JB and hired an outside hire. Because between the end of JB’s tenure and with Red so far, it’s been pretty awful.

I’m serious - can someone tell me?

I keep hearing how hell would come down upon the earth due to it.

But Syracuse basketball is literally only the memories of years gone by at this point.
would JB really want some hotshot coming in after him and winning right away?

what if his successor actually won a natty quickly?

might tarnish his legacy

JB wanting red to take over is crazy to me. JB knows basketball so well...he cant think red is a good option here...so then how could he want him?

I'm not convinced the PG talent is. Otherwise, yes. That said, I think George is at least better than what Autry is getting out of him.

Our PG isn’t a player who is going to create for himself or ISO and get by his player to create offense. He is a system PG and need to run the system and get the ball to the correct people in the system. You saw that a little in the second half with Donnie.

Unlike JJ who is awful I think George is a serviceable player and it a product of us not having a set offensive system. He would do amazing on Clemson running there system. George sucks with no offense to run
