Coach Fran Brown Show | Tennessee

Saw Fran do a cool thing last night. A young high school, maybe college aged kid was sitting with his mom and dad. During a commercial he decided to get up and go say hi to Fran. As soon as he stood up, the bump in music started as they were coming back from commercial so he turned back towards his table missing his chance. Fran saw this and said “hey, come up here” and spent a couple minutes talking with him while Matt Park reset the show from commercial.

Nothing huge but just a cool little detail I noticed. Kid went back to his table and gave his dad a nice fist bump. It made the kids night.

Love that. Fran’s so good at networking and working rooms like that. He also has an eye for noticing small things or people when they don’t realize it. It’s a great skill.

Also said Rickie is in good spirits. Joked with Fran he was 3rd QB at LSU. Here he is 2nd QB. So at least he’s moving up.

I believe he said Byron Washington and Josh Miller are in the rotation as well as OL that will be mixed in but not start.
Josh is backup C. Puts him in a good spot to start next year too.

Byron will play at times this year. I expect him to start next year.

Coach said that Matthew Hawn is one of the top 8 lineman that will be mixed in.

Said Darien Williams is hurt but would have played this weekend.

Spoke nicely of the local freshman
Love hearing that about Hawn as it bodes well for the future. If you include Hawn, that takes it from 10 to 11 guys that we all thought were fighting for a starting spot. I think its really only feasible to get 8 guys completely ready with reps. You have top back-ups at Tackle, Guard and Center. I'm not sure it means 9-11 aren't good. They may even be about as good as 6-8 but there are only so many spots you can get ready. But if that is true, i'm curious as to who is out of the top 8 and will not be likely to play much at all. Picking 3 to be left out of that top 8 is difficult if you say both of the freshman Hawn and Washington are in it. Who do we think isn't in the top 8? Maybe Zach Rice? I haven't heard much about him. As Pringle is a redshirt freshman does he get left out of the mix for now? Maybe he isn't ready yet. If those are two you still need to pick one more from the list.

1) Collins
2) Mack
3) Bertrand
4) Weatherspoon
5) Cruz
6) Hawn
7) Washington
8) Josh Miller
9) Pringle
10) TJ Ferguson
11) Zach Rice
12) Kahlil Stewart (Freshman so easy decision to redshirt)

It was also simply kind.
He remembers what something like that would have felt like when he was a kid.
Empathy and remembering how he felt as a kid are his two superpowers

Really does. He did that at spring game with autographs before too. Saw how long the line was and went out of his way to move quickly and get to everyone who came to see him especially kids. We need more empathy in the world.

Man, really sucks not having SWC to break down the entire show.

I don’t always have the time to carve out and listen but I could read a quick summary on it.

What a hole his loss is on our little internet community
When I saw on socials the show was tonight my muscle memory brought me to the board to see his preview post. So sad.

I was a bit disappointed Matt Park did not give an ode to Steve in North Syracuse. Thought it was deserved.

I was going to ask if this was mentioned. Certainly seems like a missed opportunity. I would assume Matt Park has been made aware of his passing?

I listened to the taped show today.

Some general comments:

I was disappointed that the video was not posted on youtube. Pretty sure I could have gotten a transcript for it if it was.

I was disappointed it was not close captioned.

The audio for Matt and Coach Brown was good but it was hard to understand any of the questions from users calling in, which is bad because that constitutes most of the show.

There was video from Meier’s Creek but it was one camera that never moved and they never went to tape or showed any additional info or graphics. This was clearly a radio show that had a camera running. The segments that went to and from commercials were pretty disjointed and radio oriented.

And there were a lot of them and they were long. 2 1/2 minutes long. They were roughly shown every 8 minutes, though near the end, they had two within 5 minutes of each other. When they went to commercial, the video just showed a screen showing Learfield sports and Syracuse and silenced the mics. 2 1/2 minutes of dead air and a static image. For about 1/3 th show. That was it.

Maybe they will eventually insert commercials at some point. Or put in some trivia questions?

The ideal solution would be to remove these gaps before posting the video to YouTube (and add in close captions at this point as well). That would at least give people listenng in a chance to understand the call in questions.

Anyway, I don’t have much on the questions that were asked from users. From what I could hear most of the questions were pretty inane, and not of much interest to the people on this board.

Someone did call in and ask about how Darien Williams from CBA was doing. Coach Brown said Darien was really fast and if healthy, he probably would be playing Saturday. Probably should be noted e called him Darren not Darien. Said all the CBA kids were well prepared and impressive. Said Daunte was working at WR (not TE), was doing well there and would stay here. He is also apparently excelling on special teams.

And he mentioned Matt Hawn was one of 8 OL in line to play Saturday. He didn’t guarantee he would but he is at least one of the top 8 OL right now, which is remarkable.

Coach Brown talked early about Tennessee. Called most of their players by their first names. Was very complimentary of their talent an said he was thrilled to get a chance to play against a playoff level team early in the season.

Matt asked Fran if he learned anything from his first year of coaching? Fran said yes. Said you don’t want to start preparing for an opponent too early, because the team stops paying attention after a while.

Also Matt started criticizing the Yanks and said they were more of a DIRT than a DART team (where the I was for each person and not accountable) and Fran just pointed out that he didn’t say anything about the Yanks and this was all on Matt.

As much as it is a skill, I think he genuinely cares, which I think is even better.
