I was devastated last year when HCDM announced he was leaving. I thought all the progress we had made was out the window. Really didn't know what to expect from our new coach, but deep down I thought we were going to take a big step backwards. Wow, was I wrong. This coach, to me is everything a head coach should be. If you are a player, how could you not be affected by his positive approach? I have never seen a defense get as much out of their ability as this one. Their attacking, relentless style is so fun to watch. Off the field, whenever he is given a microphone, whether it's a post-game presser or an on-field interview, he always seems to say exactly the right thing at all times. You can just feel his emotion. I can't believe I am saying this, but I now feel more confident about the future of our program than I did under HCDM. I hope Coach Schafer is here many more years, after which time he will become a true icon of SU football.

I actually had goose bumps watching him celebrate after the game when we won

Nice post. His philosophy and personality would make me play for him if I was a recruit.

Hear ya bro.....I was in hook line in sinker with him even before the now legendary PC announcing him. As an ex player you know who has the qualities to be successful. I was all in on him from the get go but understand how many needed to take a wait and see approach. So it's good see many more are now high on him.

We aint back to where we want to be yet but as chip noted we are at least walking after crawling on the way to running!

Yes. He's a head coach with a defensive coordinator background, which I thought certainly spelled trouble when Syracuse named him top dog. The life blood of a college team is the offensive line and offense in general--needed know-how and skill here to keep offenses on the field and alleviate pressure on defense. Didn't think Syracuse would go anywhere with a head coach who is more clueless about offense than defense.

But Shaf apparently knows people who can get the job done on that side of the ball. The danger is when McDonald gets really good, will he stay? Hearing how he has taken the comments from ignorant people on Syracuse.com does not lead me to believe he will be inclined to. Combine that with his track record, and after a couple more solid offensive seasons, it will be a big question mark. Will Shaf be able to make another solid hire at that point?

Let's not put the cart before the horse. Fact still remains that after 12 games our offense is ranked 86th out of all FBS schools. Things were clicking on Sat, especially that last drive but McDonald isn't on anyone's radar yet. I applaud him for Sat but it doesn't change the results from the rest of the season. That Pitt game was awful. Our defense held Pitt to something like 21 yards rushing and less than 200 passing and we still lost. This isn't a knock on him, just be careful anointing him the next Kevin Rogers.

McDonald moves around a lot. I'm hoping for a couple of more seasons - but anything long term would shock me.

He didn't even flinch when the guys dumped the water on him. I've never seen a coach act like he didn't get 10 gallons of ice water dumped all over him.

The thing is he has contacts from over 20 years of college coaching, people he respects, and those who respect him. When the time comes that McDonald is ready to go to a better job, Scott will have some-one ready to come in. By the way we finally clicked on running a fast paced offense, over 90+ plays, it took all the youngsters time to all get on the same page. The great thing is the young people got experience, we played many more people, a good amount of time, on both sides of the ball. When Doug was here the starters played almost the whole game, even in blowouts.

I would be fine with promoting Lester if the time came. But we have a long, long way to go until this is even a question.

I think i read somewhere that Marrone said that Shafer brought more to the table than he did
