Coach Search Options after Autry

This will be an official game thread. Big game tonight for South Florida vs Memphis.
What makes it a big game? Memphis is 12-13.

So, if USF loses we can stop talking about Hodgson? Is that what you're saying?

I'm looking forward to it and Memphis is underperforming with one of the most talented rosters per 247 in the American.

Pretty good article here lots of insight on USF for you guys that don't watch much basketball outside of Syracuse. Some of the better quotes...

"Coach (Hodgson) runs this like an NBA team,'' said Bulls senior center Izaiyah Nelson, a frontrunner for American Conference Player of the Year while averaging 16.0 points and 9.8 rebounds. "If you don't like our style of play, you don't like basketball. As players, we dream about playing this style. Other teams probably don't like preparing for us because we're looking to run you into the ground.''

USF leads the American in seven team categories — average points (88.8), rebounds (42.7), offensive rebounds (15.3), assists, free-throw attempts (28.1), free throws made (20.6) and 3-point attempts (29.1). Nelson is the American pace-setter in rebounds (9.8), field-goal percentage (.592), and double-doubles (16).

"It's great to score up in triple digits, but honestly, we focus more on our offensive efficiency numbers and getting lots of possessions,'' Hodgson said. "The No. 1 thing is winning basketball games. The way we recruit, we have an offensive-heavy mindset, but we look to teach them to be great defenders. Scoring is great. We want to be great at defense, too.''

"What was promised has been delivered — the reality is we're a fast-paced, hard-nosed playing team,'' Brown said. "But people don't see the work behind the scenes, the practices where we're running two hours straight. No stops, very few breaks, nothing. It was a hard time, but I adjusted to it, and now it's my way of life.

"That one is huge,'' Quarles said. "We want high (volume of) 3's, high layups, high free throws … and not a lot of mid-range 2's. That formula turns into a lot of points and being as efficient as we can be.
So much for the fake news from someone that his top players didn't like him

The whole buy out thing would be on Wildhack. Why would any business give any inexperienced rookie head coach a multi year contract with no performance stipulations? Syracuse has done this repeatedly to their detriment.

Has Syracuse done this repeatedly? I don’t follow the football coaching changes closely; did this happen with Dino? On the basketball side, we obviously have only experienced JB’s weird year-to-year contract situation.

Anyway, there’s no way Red’s buyout is much, if anything. His contract is probably close to expired and I think he’s making a mil or two a year. If they have to buy him out for $4M, they better have that money lol. If they don’t, just pack it all up and drop down to D3.

Guys think really hard if you want another team built around Donnie with a new coach.

Kingz is a role player you need back and prob Sadiq because of the potential but beyond that take the orange colored glasses off and just look across the portal at the players that we can get in here that have not been part of losing programs and coached by losing coaches
I'll take Donnie with a new coach - not that we will have any say in any of this.

Everyone talks about Kingz coming back. He is a red shirt senior this season and already had a medical redshirt year at Oregon State. Unless I am missing something, he does not have eligibility left.

What and not start immediately calling for a new coach? Where's the fun in that?
Funny or not funny, it will happen. Some of our hoop elitists will start carping the moment an ibounds play or two doesn't pan out or the coach isn't running enough sets for our arm chair coaches. Can't wait

I've seen that where some websites will change their name immediately. For example, #firebriandaboll to #firemikekafka to #firejohnharbaugh.

Or in our case, #fireredautry to #firebryanhodgson.

But, we are Hodgson's dream job. Amirite?

Guys think really hard if you want another team built around Donnie with a new coach. When the injury bug hits and the momentum gets rolling the wrong way where has he been? Sleeping for 5-10 game stretches at a time.

Talent is great and all and I'm sure some team will take him no questions asked and pay him a ton more than we will. Will they build a team around him? Hell no, he will be a piece, I would argue on some of these top 5 teams he might not even be a starter.

He's not physical enough!

I believe you are right.

But who knows with the NCAA. Although it seems more common in football, guys sometimes get 7, 8, or more years on appeal. Crazy.

Kingz had a medical redshirt year and also played a year of JUCO. It’s definitely possible the NCAA gives him an extra year

Most likely the new coach will want to bring in a completely new roster of players (maybe keeping 1 or 2 players at most). One of the first things the new coach will want to establish is a new, positive and winning culture.

Regardless of how good the current players are and how well they fit in the new coach's system, it's much easier to get buy in bringing in new ideas, playing philosophies, and training methods etc. without having players from the old regime comparing everything to the old way.
