Coach Search Options after Autry

If we do make a change I would look long and hard at Luke Murray.

Assuming he’s got crootin chops, could be the hoops version of Fran Brown.

The fate of the program comes down to the next coach.
Maybe it turns on the fate of the football program. If the football program rises up in a way that improves our ability to stay in the top tier, then we will have more resources available. If it implodes and a top tier forms with us on the outside, then maybe we can divert substantial funds to the basketball team... kind of a UConn-like approach. The worst case scenario is right where we are... P4, but not P2... in a P4, but never dominating... good year/bad year... too good at football to punt it, not good enough at football to have it benefit us financially.

There is so many good options out there that would thrive here if it comes to it. Nate Oats still has to get the first call and you make him say no. I know everyone is tired of me bringing him up, he will be the only blue chip candidate that you call and maybe go a little more than your comfortable with on compensation. Plenty of good lower profile options after him.

Some of these takes on who people think they can get are some of the “best” I’ve seen on here. Not even being rude about it, I just can’t believe some think that someone is going to leave a job that is paying 2-2.5x at their current job to leave a successful program where they are to come here. The university is NOT paying someone $4m to coach the basketball team. Which means to uproot someone like from Iowa state means that they would have to pay them roughly $6m a year and up the resources and pay buyout. That is what it will cost for a good coach at a successful program at the minimum.
I know who the new chancellor is and he is pro sports and I mean very pro athletics and there’s still no way it’s going to happen unfortunately. Not saying we can’t get an up and coming assistant, but some of these takes are purely psychotic

The new Chancellor as in Syverud replacement? Did I miss an announcement?

First, I totally agree with your take on SU’s approach.

However, I often think very smart leaders who are too cost focused struggle with the value creation (revenue) side of the equation.

How much revenue is SU losing each year with declining basketball attendance? What is the projected revenue if we return to games with 25k+ in the Dome?

The only and I mean only blue chipper you go after is Nate Oats. It’s highly likely not going to happen, but he is the first call, maybe force Alabama hand a little bit to give him an extension. Especially, if he has an early NCAA tournament exit, he may feel a scenery change is in store. After that you look for successful mid major coaches with northeast ties. The only assistants you consider is a Mike Boyton Jr or Luke Murray.

It’s going to piss people off, but anyone with a brain should realize the next coach will be a up and comer from a MM. There’s nothing wrong with that. Look at Virginia, Michigan etc. I’m still shocked Nova hired Willard. Thought that was an underwhelming hire.

Honestly, quit that narrative. It is just nonsense. Depending on what you value, central NY is great.

I have traveled all over the world and lived overseas for the past 17 years. And I love coming back to CNY. Finger lakes, natural beauty, vineyards. It is great. I bring people to Green Lakes and they are blown away. Cazenovia, Skaneateles. All on your doorstep.
I agree it depends on what you value. Which is why I thought it was a weird take by a poster (not you) to assume Iowa State’s coach would so easily leave Ames for Syracuse.

We had the best assistant coach in the country when Hop was here. It doesn't guarantee they have the chops to be a head coach. We blew our mulligan on Red to appease an ancient Sumerian deity, so now we don't have the luxury of taking a high risk/high reward chance on a guy like Murray. We need something closer to a guarantee with a high ceiling.

Schertz is my pick right now.

Murray is probably the only assistant because he already has a reputation in a specific area or excellence. Most assistants you really don't know what they heck they're gonna do.

No but I was told who it is and it’s a home run
I still can’t believe out of all the candidates, we hired a Georgetown grad and ironically had the worst decade in College Basketball in decades while he was in office. I know a lot more was involved that led to the worst decade, but you couldn’t write a better movie script lol.

I've been harsh on SU leadership, mostly because I've been forced to watch utter slop for so long and they have not made smart decisions or showed that they care about maintaining the old bball prestige.

But I'm starting to get the feeling they might surprise us this Spring and do better than expected with the next coach.
I agree. No way JW will not use every possible card for this hire. It will be his legacy and I’m sure he knows that.

Willard is underwhelming? Nova will be back starting next season.

And that’s where the problem is I don’t see us paying a coach 5-6 million. He’s already making 4 at ISU. Hey I’d love to be wrong though
Otzelberger also has a long history with Iowa State. He was an assistant coach and associate head coach there under Hoiberg in the 2010s before Fred left for the NBA. He went to Washington for a couple of years and then returned to Iowa State. He has deep roots there and is from Wisconsin. He’s not going anywhere. Syracuse just needs to find the next successful, experienced mid-major guy like Otz/Pat Kelsey/Todd Golden/Dusty May/Ben McCollum, etc. That guy is Josh Schertz, imo.

I’m glad you make this point to everyone and interesting insight about the new chancellor. But hiring up and coming assistant?!? I have to say I disagree with that. That has rarely worked out in college basketball in recent years, aside from Tommy Lloyd going from Gonzaga to Arizona (a school that has great resources). The route to getting Syracuse basketball back to the top is hiring a proven coach from the mid-major level, ideally someone who has had success at multiple programs.
