Regardless of coach there is no long runway. A hall of famer could come back and have a bad year and our fanbase would say they don’t know how to use the portal or deal with nil or they’ve lost their fastball. Here is the aspect I haven't see discussed yet. What if either guy gets off to.a bad start? The fan base will be patient with bh. He's never been here before. If gmac does people are going to.be all over him. This is autry 2.0, another bad boeheim tree guy.
If you were Gerry, you'd have the same outsized confidence that he has demonstrated his whole life & which has led him to be a successful HC and would very much believe you can succeed here.If I was Gerry I wouldn’t want this job right now for all the reasons stated
I can get behind people not ranking Gerry as their #1 candidate due to Siena being a big jump to Syracuse and wanting someone like Hodgson more. I can't get behind people saying that you can't hire Gerry because he has ties to Jim Boeheim. If you were Gerry, you'd have the same outsized confidence that he has demonstrated his whole life & which has led him to be a successful HC and would very much believe you can succeed here.
The thought that Gerry thinks he would fail here is one of the more wild of the manufactured anti jb coaching tree arguments. Not as wild however as the afternoons 20 or so posts about fans not supporting him.
I will support him, but probably not renew my season tickets. He does nothing to excite me and he hasn’t proven nearly enough to get this job.If you were Gerry, you'd have the same outsized confidence that he has demonstrated his whole life & which has led him to be a successful HC and would very much believe you can succeed here.

I'm not saying I want GMAC - but he could do what Hurley did at UCONN and find an offensive mind to help him with that side of the ball.I think it'll be a 50/50 split if Gerry was hired. I know a lot of people who would be ecstatic with the hire including current coaches in lower ranks and a lot of people in my inner circle who are just done with Boeheim disciples. My brother in law who does coach in the lower college ranks thinks he's great and my wife wants him just because that's her favorite former player.
Personally my reservations about Gerry have to do with the lack of offensive ingenuity. I think he'd build a team that play hard tough defense, but we would likely still struggle to score. Until he proves differently it's not an inspiring hire. I do think he will ultimately be a better HC than either Red or Hop.

The coaches you are referring to may not want the job. GMAC may become the best option. Again - I would prefer Hodgson - but what I want doesn't matter. But if that's what GMac requires, why not just hire a coach who DOESN'T need that kind of support to overcome a perceived limitation and has already proven he has the offensive chops to excel?

I'm fine with Gerry as a second choice. With that being said, Gerry can't completely wash his hands of the decline of SU basketball. He was there for most of it. We can't just pretend that he wasn't. I like what I see out of Siena, but I'd like to see a bit more before I say give him the keys.If you were Gerry, you'd have the same outsized confidence that he has demonstrated his whole life & which has led him to be a successful HC and would very much believe you can succeed here.

Dude, that is like 2 hours ago, so yesterday. We're all friends again. As for #3, yep, you still need that.Reading every post in this thread I think 3 things
1) l believe some posters love to argue.
2) l can’t believe some posters still call out insiders on information they are just passing along.
3) I wish I invested in a speed reading course.
With what has gone on the past 10 years. Why would you have a problem with someone feeling that way?I can get behind people not ranking Gerry as their #1 candidate due to Siena being a big jump to Syracuse and wanting someone like Hodgson more. for real. I noticed how angry I was when I snapped at someone today at work. Didn't help that I was on a meeting with some jerk wearing Kansas gear talking about march madness earlier either.Add #4 -![]()
Again, and I’ll post this for about a gazillionth time, last year’s $8M total roster money (actually a bit more) was seen as a one time situation with a specific donor ponying up an unusual amount. The $8M (rev share and NIL) would be a bit less than I think we can raise, but it’s not out the ballpark of possibility.Goodman seems to think that SU’s NIL offering will be about $8 million. Seriously? It was $8 million this past season. He immediately loses credibility with his NIL projection.
Sure. And thats why I wouldn't rank McNamara ahead of Hodgson. Can you get behind people saying that you can't hire Gerry because the program is in a really bad decline and hasn't made the NCAA tournament in 5 years, and needs someone with a more proven track record?
Hodgson camp essentially saying no thank you to a tune up year, they want to be ready to win year 1. As a fan, I'm down. I would've been fine giving them the tune up year where you provide the resources and do just enough (20-11, win a game in the ACCT, 10 seed) to generate the excitement to build up the donation base. Hodgson camp aiming to get the resource to aim much higher, great! All on paper though until the games happen.Again, and I’ll post this for about a gazillionth time, last year’s $8M total roster money (actually a bit more) was seen as a one time situation with a specific donor ponying up an unusual amount. I still think we need to be $10M total roster money to get who we want, my guess is Hodgson wants $12M.
$12 million will allow us to bring in starters from Power Four schools. Last year we only got George. The rest were role players. If you surround some of this year’s role players with a couple of studs, we will be much improved.Again, and I’ll post this for about a gazillionth time, last year’s $8M total roster money (actually a bit more) was seen as a one time situation with a specific donor ponying up an unusual amount.
