Coach Search Options after Autry

I know Joe Gallo’s name has started to be connected to us lately, but I admit that I know nothing about him. Would he fit this program? What are some pros and cons? I’d like to be filled in on him!

Who pays for NIL? I imagine that includes companies etc too. I would think that it’s every coach and every AD’s situation currently isn’t it? The universities have a specific amount they can distribute ($20 million) but NIL has to come from somewhere else. Who should he address the issue to if not fans, local corporations, businesses? Just wondering. Am I mistaken and there are other sources? I know things seem to change everyday but Wildhack addressing the issue seems to be a standard part of his job I would think.

Pitino has done a phenomenal job at St. John’s and just led them to a big win over 3rd ranked UCONN. His passion for the game is stronger than ever and he is one of the last true old school coaches who has adjusted to the NIL era. Imagine where our program would be if he took over after Boeheim.

There isn’t a Pitino out there and a few good coaches a level down (Shaka Smart, Mark Fee, Nate Oats etc.) are not available. A few up and coming names have been thrown out there on this board but they aren’t proven winners at power schools. I wonder if an NBA experienced coach should be considered? Yes, there’s been a few that have stumbled at the college level, but the college game has changed significantly in the past 2 to 3 years due to Nil, the portal and older, veteran players being highly sought after. You could say that the college game is now similar to the pros, so an NBA experienced coach should be able to prosper at the college level.

It's too bad he's burned too many bridges along his coaching career as he would be a great replacement as SU next HC.

Side note here, but how many of you last night would have loved to give Hurley one good punch. The way he acts during the game and towards officials is really disgusting. How the guy doesn't get T'd up more and thrown out games is beyond me. If I was ref he wouldn't make it through the first TV timeout.

No argument with that at all, but without a major upgrade in the NIL environment you’re not going to get a up and coming outside the family hire. Hopefully people understand there is more to the solution than to simply change coaches. It’s okay to hope it’s remedied with OPM, but that all it is . Hope.

The school can handle the cost of paying top flight for a coach. And if someone wants to play booster warbucks I’m not stopping him. More power to them.

No. I spent enough as a student to go to Syracuse. This isn’t an annual recurring revenue expectation for me or anyone.

The blame is on the SUAD for selecting a guy who can’t coach. fan interest is there (see 1980-2020)

Expecting fans to subsidize is crazy. Boosters are free to do it but they are getting something from it (buildings, BoT spots, flights on plane w team, etc). Thats the upper echelon.

I know you are just trying to make a point, but why do we resort to asking things like this? It seems counterproductive. Everyone has a different financial situation and buying a ticket to a few games for one person is like giving $100K or more relative to another.

Syracuse basketball has the largest potential for ticket sales in the country and has a top ten history. Die hard fans like you and I and the others on this board have every right to talk about the likely coaching change and hope for the best possible hire regardless of our individual ability to donate. The program was built with a great coach and a fan base that supported the team to the tune of 30,000 plus people a game.

NIL has changed the landscape but we all know that there are good coaches out there and many alumni that have a lot of money. People will support a winner and we need someone who coaches well and can positively affect NIL. The two go hand in hand, and our personal NIL contribution amount should not factor into anything. Wildhack understands this and that is why he keeps appealing to businesses and has stressed the importance of ticket sales. Both are required and both will come with a good coach, whether he be an alumni or not.

And there have been comments here that individuals won’t give a dime to the program until a change is made. I have had several discussions with CAF officials trying to re establish a grass roots NIL campaign and thought responses might give me some talking points.
We need to understand that just changing the coaches will not get us back to the glory days. I heard Colby Clark say that Fran wouldn’t have won a single game in 2024 without SU Football NIL. Certainly hyperbolic but a valid point.
And the first question a prospective replacement will ask will be about what resources he will have. If the answer is that we might have the tenth biggest NIL war chest in the ACC don’t expect a great response,

Well if you make a splash hire, fans would be more inclined to donate. The problem right now is the Syracuse Brand is stale, you need to get someone who will reinvigorate the program. Paying a little more may help in the long run once the Syracuse brand is back up at the top.

Unfortunately it’s a bit of chicken and egg. You won’t make a splash hire unless that coach is confident he can succeed here, and he can’t succeed without the resources.

A few things:

We need more NIL, but it’s not the reason we stink this year. Talent is there at several spots.

Autry was not nearly as aggressive when it comes to raising funds for his program.

A new coach can bring in new donors. There’s people out there who won’t donate to this current operation.

Does anyone here think that Red wouldn’t have accepted a contract offer without buyouts when we’re the only P6 school anywhere near crazy enough to offer him a HC job?

I've been saying for years he would have crawled over broken glass to sign a 2 year deal when he had 0 leverage. If he declined we would have just said fine we will do a national search or hire Gerry if we can't agree. JB said its standard to get 5 year contracts. ADs and schools can be so stupid not realizing not all coaching hires are the same and allowing these agents to strong arm them every time.

From the view of someone who’d be happy to up donations given reasons to, here’s what I’d love to see:

- More transparency in what this Athletic Department and School’s view and plans for Syracuse basketball are. We’ve seen the past decades, tell me why I’ll love the next 20-30 years and how it should happen.

- Publicly addressing the current state of the program, what those additional issues are aside from coaching that must be fixed/addressed.

- Renewed grassroots, neighborhood NIL efforts because this has always been a fan driven program and honestly the school in my opinion throws shade at fans too much considering the game day atmosphere and product they provide.

Syracuse basketball isn’t something I look forward to each year anymore and I need to be shown a plan/vision before anything changes. That starts with the school and AD before a new coach.

It is definitely chicken and egg. However, using your example of the amount of money you helped raise for NIL, that is not going to make much of a difference in a prospective coach's decision. We need corporate or several large donors' commitments and I suspect that JW has secured some commitments behind the scenes. The potential for 30,000 fans is unique to Syracuse and is a big draw for a coach, in my opinion. I am not buying what some people are saying that suggests that we are not a top 10 attractive job in the country for a new coach. It's a perfect situation. You come in after the guy who did not succeed after a legend. They're probably going to pay a lot because the AD cannot have another bad hire. And the NIL money will be more if the big donors see a proven winner. This is a swing for the fences type hire and I am optimistic.

It's standard to offer a buyout, this stuff is nuts. They could hire any idiot here and that person would rightly be looking to protect / insure themselves. And it has nothing do to with who gets hired next.

If the AD and School share a feasible, and energetic vision for the future of the program.. a war chest can be built. Its not an entitlement (not suggesting thats what you’re alluding).
