No argument with that at all, but without a major upgrade in the NIL environment you’re not going to get a up and coming outside the family hire.

One component of NIL that I’m not seeing mentioned, isn’t just the need for more more more to get better players, but you need it to get better coaches too. I bet one of the first things asked during an interview by the prospective head coach is how much NIL do I have at my disposal? Sure the head coach is responsible of going out and bringing in some NIL but they also want to know what their baseline is.

If the AD and School share a feasible, and energetic vision for the future of the program.. a war chest can be built. Its not an entitlement (not suggesting thats what you’re alluding).

And also as a private school SU has the advantage of not having to disclose this stuff publicly where it could be used against the coach in Recruiting like at state/public schools.

This was all totally self inflicted. We got sanctioned by the NCAA in 2015 but we have been self sanctioning ourselves for the last 10 years.

It is definitely chicken and egg. However, using your example of the amount of money you helped raise for NIL, that is not going to make much of a difference in a prospective coach's decision. We need corporate or several large donors' commitments and I suspect that JW has secured some commitments behind the scenes. The potential for 30,000 fans is unique to Syracuse and is a big draw for a coach, in my opinion. I am not buying what some people are saying that suggests that we are not a top 10 attractive job in the country for a new coach. It's a perfect situation. You come in after the guy who did not succeed after a legend. They're probably going to pay a lot because the AD cannot have another bad hire. And the NIL money will be more if the big donors see a proven winner. This is a swing for the fences type hire and I am optimistic.

Well stated. Exactly my thinking, and hope. And I don't think that is a homer optimistic take. I think their is a lot of pressure to make the right hire to right the ship for the University's flagship program. And JW is a seasoned corporate professional. Finally, he has the 'told you so' in his back pocket regarding the Autry hire. I think he will be able to push forward with the funds needed for a big hire. Now let's hope his top candidates feel the same re the above.

Unfortunately it’s a bit of chicken and egg. You won’t make a splash hire unless that coach is confident he can succeed here, and he can’t succeed without the resources.

Exactly. I recall GMac at Siena waiting to sign anything until the Siena administration committed to having the NIL resources he believed he needed to be competitive there. It just is what it is in the current college sports world.

It's standard to offer a buyout, this stuff is nuts. They could hire any idiot here and that person would rightly be looking to protect / insure themselves. And it has nothing do to with who gets hired next.

Well it has everything to do with who gets hired next because it’s money that we are paying to someone who is not actively coaching. Red had zero leverage. You don’t give the guy a house to get them to buy a car. We should’ve offered a 3 year deal with an option to extend. If he didn’t want it then he was free to go off and try his luck elsewhere. We needlessly locked ourselves into a bad agreement and now we’re paying the price. It’s not like he was going to leave on his own accord. If he stunk we get out of he was great, he’s not leaving Syracuse.

It's not that a prospective coach is going to care about NIL, it's that fans better pay up if they want one who has some helium.

Fans didn't let JAB kick around to torpedo the program, Fans didn't give Red Autry a multi-million dollar commitment, Fans don't sit on the BOT, Fans don't populate the NCAA that created this mess, and fans have zero control over how any of this plays out. The admin apparently has no agency here and they're all passive victims. So, if no one wants to coach at Syracuse because we're a broke ass county in upstate South Canada, then focus on academics seeing how that's been slipping too. Fans are probably at fault there, too.

What "Big Time Coach" would want to come here? The perception and the reality of Syracuse hoops...isn't what it used to be. The drawing cards that were so important in the past...are not the same now. Now, How much NIL money is available to buy talent is the big drawing card and I don't think we are in the "Top Ten" in that department... We will all see as it develops...As an Alum and a fan since the 70's, predating Coach B, I just think our expectations are too high in this current climate and we may never get back to the "Glory Days" of Syracuse basketball! I could settle for a fun to watch competitive team, but year in and year out dominance is a hard ask..IMO...

Why did red need a 5 year contract? He shouldn’t have been the first choice, let alone one that you let dictate terms. He had never been a HC before and had no other major offers that I am aware of.

As for the margins, they are probably pretty thin if we are freaking out over how we can pay a million more to get a good coach . yeah it’ll be a small impact on the bottom line but We could’ve paid red anything and he would’ve taken the job. People have done entire seasons as interim coaches with zero guarantees yet we felt the need to try to lockdown an unproven guy from a failed staff?

Maybe something in the water there, because in ten years, Utah St has had four coaches and five tourney bids. If nothing else, it seems to lead to an even better job

Red's contract has no bearing on the next coach.

NIL, infrastructure, open jobs in BIG, PAC, and B-12, probably ACC stuff are all that matters. Whatever he may be owed is a rounding error next to that.

It was my understanding from the conversations that I had that Syracuse we were near the top 3rd of the ACC this year in NIL.

We had multiple players with multi million dollars deal

We had a coach that didn’t really help or want to be involved in that process.

So with little to no coach support fundraiser a coach who didn’t want to fundraise and coming off a losing season we were able to be top 1/3rd in ACC in NIL.

Now I am to believe we can’t hire a good coach who will do the things that Red wouldn’t. And with those things like Engage in fundraising. Engage the fan base. Win games. That we somehow will have less NIL with those things?

I know little to nothing about negotiations leading to a coaching hire at D-I schools. Based upon your comments, you're in the same boat.
