Coach Search Options after Autry

2 things to be less than confident in: first, $$$ support, and second the length of runway
Completely fair, but knowing GMac, he believes he can do it right away. And other schools have shown that turnarounds can happen quick.

But I understand your points for sure. I can see why he could be less confident. I just don’t think he’s the type of person to be, which is good for us.

In fairness, no one is a sure thing, or remotely close to it. College hoops is littered with previously successful coaches who flame out at a different school.

Unfortunately it seems that SU is fishing in shallow waters. It would be great if just one HC who’s currently having P5 success was linked to us. Instead it’s all short term mid and low major guys.

I’m not going to be terribly optimistic about anyone until he proves it on the floor.
For sure, but I think someone like Schertz is far more proven as a head coach than Gerry both from a competition standpoint and also a track record standpoint.

Your takes are amazing. I appreciate the critical thinking skills you demonstrate.
Just saying what I think. I’m just super skeptical about hiring a guy who only just started really winning in one of the worst conferences in college basketball.

Doty is a baller and I think he will be great in Orange. But if he was not a Syracuse alum would anyone be excited?

Look if he wins next year please dm me these receipts so I can laugh at myself but I feel like nostalgia is clouding many of the possible concerns

if it’s true, I’m going to be thrilled. I am thrilled about most of the other choices too. Gerry proved he can recruit, coach and put together a system. Even if he’s not the best at those things, he’s proven he’s adaptable and will be devoted to addressing his weaknesses. The benefits he brings to the program are exciting, his familiarity, his work ethic, his culture and the face he can be for the program. If he works out, it’s the absolute best case scenario. That’s the risk you’re taking no matter who you pick.

Hoopers come from everywhere. Doty proved last week he can ball against the best on the biggest stage. Not sure about Moesch but the school that just got Hodgson wanted him. They’ll both be role players at minimum if they go to cuse, but not the only guys
Doty scored 21 against Duke. A good part of the second half on a bad ankle.
Yet we think he is only good enough to be a role player?

Here’s my take on GMac, as someone who was very much in the camp for hiring an outside guy to take the program in a different direction.

First, GMac did go out on his own to gain head coaching experience at a small, lower level program without resources that was struggling. He took that program all the way to the NCAAT and almost upset a Goliath. He did it all in two years with a depleted roster of kids that were overlooked and under-recruited. There’s something to say about what he did at Siena. Nothing he did there was easy.

Second, Syracuse is a unique job. While it would be nice to have a fresh direction, it’s a program that still relies on its history and is proud of its past successes. You can’t completely discard history. GMac is obviously a person that understands SU’s history as he was one of the single greatest players to wear Orange. There’s nothing wrong with hiring alums if they are able to build on the past history of the program and deliver future success.

Third, it was obvious that GMac should have gotten the job when JB retired but unfortunately hierarchy and other factors got in the way. Getting past over once for bad reasons doesn’t mean the opportunity should be dead to you forever. I wish GMac got thr job over Red as I firmly believe we would be in a better position today. But you can’t rewind the clock. I’m fine with giving GMac the job today as he’s now more prepared than he was in 2023.

Fourth, GMac is just a born winner. I believe his work ethic, intensity and desire to win will turn the program around. I believe his passion will attract alumni and donors to support the program. He’s probably the most passionate player we’ve ever had. He rises to the moment. He’ll rise to the moment as head coach at Syracuse and bring the program back to its rightful place in the college basketball landscape.
If he’s a “born winner” then why didn’t he have a pro career? I’m not even talking about the NBA.

Why didn’t he land a slew of 5 star recruits in his 12 years as a coach at SU?

No offense, but that kind of comment is meaningless.

GMAC may be good in the long run, but we’ve spent 12 years being very marginal at best and he was here for most of it. It’s the same people were expecting to make the changes we know we need. They don’t want too and as a result we are fading.

In all seriousness without laughter, if there is no defensive buy in required
Kiyan better be buying in….not sure who he is going to hear worse from, the fans or GMAC if he isn’t. GMAC I can guarantee is lowkey not thrilled to be taking this opportunity right now because while it is kind of a dream come true (those are the conditions he probably imagined taking this job under and this isn’t it by following Red). He’s doing it because he has too, feels a duty to do it. And a nice check in salary and roster on the side helps too lol.

How could he given where he learned how to be a coach? We are playing out the definition of insanity.
My take on GMac, is that he showed he’s adaptable this year. I’ve seen the offensive sets they ran. And he should a great ability to understand what his team needed in the offseason, found the right players, and adjusted his game plan as injuries and the suspension happened.

Obviously I could be wrong, but in my basketball opinion, GMac showed great coaching instincts to me, which is why I believe he will be successful. All good if others feel different. Just my take.
