Coach Search Options after Autry

I think GMAC bringing in players from Siena is smart. Helps other players to know what to expect and they’ve been in the system for two years.

As long as he’s not bringing in 6.

I'm fine with one or two, but there are real risks if we go beyond that.

It could also establish an environment where there is perceived favourtism (real or not). It could help with accountability... or it could cause the opposite impact. In the age of NIL and the transfer portal, perception often matters as much as reality to kids making decisions.

Let's also remember we brought in players who did pretty well in a far stronger league (the CAA vs MAAC). And they were not great.

Would think some of these guys are cheap depth too which will help stretch the dollars to bring in hopefully higher end talent.

But yeah completely agreed. Bringing some guys in that know what Gerry is looking for is pretty much purely good as long as they aren't the best talent we have lol

If they bring in a point, a SG and a Forward, that's fine.
Our SG spot is going to be a challenge.
I see our depth, theoretically, as (1) Kings, (2) Anthony, (3) Doty.

Who on Siena is better than George at PG? Especially in year 2.
People forget that if we were to keep Fennell, he's like 6-5 or so, and can nail a three.
Is anybody on Siena honestly better than that? Fennell never got an honest chance.

Yeah, two is kind of my number, too.
We have better talent on the roster, and they might do really well with better coaching.

Damnmn Now I have to look to see if I still have my "Overrated" shirt, I may have duped it off a year or two ago.

What is Gerry's offensive system and defensive system or identity, beyond getting his players working hard? Not an anti-Gerry question but I am interested in knowing those, as those are things that maximize your NIL spending efficiency.

To me in the age of NIL, if you are not a top 10/top 15 spender, in order to excel most years you have to a system/team identity, a model of a player, a player that you can get at decent value and will exceed his $ value because its the right fit. That is how you maximize NIL. Its not just getting as much NIL as possible and get talent.

Under Red, it just seemed like we got the "best" players we could get with our average set of resources, But Red never really established an identity, and the players never really fit into identity.

Doty, Folefac, Moesch (via 2026 class), and maybe maybe Shoats and that should be it. For the current Syracuse guys that stay, my oh my are they in for a culture change shock. GMAC has a lot of old school characteristics that he won't put aside (good thing) that Autry did and it hurt Autry ultimately. I feel like Autry's teams play with no sense of urgency. GMAC has a Pitino demeanor to him that's really intriguing. He's not going to run the flashy schemes, etc. But his teams are going to be tough, good fundamentals, and trying to out smart the competition.
Shoats is out of eligibility I believe

Moesch is a poor man's Braedon Smith. Maybe better than a poor man's. Would be an upgrade at PG(not out for himself) and definately better than JJ or Carlos from the year before.

Kid is crafty, head smart, and plays hard/is a competitor/has a little Devo in him.

Here is a bunch of articles on him...

He has the same mind set as Doty.
Works his ass off and is super competitive.
Very very quick from what I hear.

I can beat that. When I was at Bank of Boston, we hired a firm to help us with our name change. We paid them 1 million dollars. they changed the name to BankBoston. Took the of out. We liked the job they did so much that we hired them to help with our mutual funds which were named the 1784 funds. They changed it to Boston 1784. A half a million for that. No joke. I always thought they must have been laughing their butts off.

Clearly. They have to be nothing more than 8-10 roster fillers, at best. Doty maybe a bit higher. Again, the rationale for GMac was NIL. If he is not bringing in topnotch talent day 1, the hire looks like a massive failure out of the gate.
Maybe relax a bit, wait and see how it plays out.. The ink isn’t even dry and the portal isn’t open.

I'm sure Doty and Foleac (sp?) + the Chittenango kid... this is not what I would call top 25 talent
Dude...we need players. There's a bench as well as needing bodies for practice. Bringing a couple of his better players will be ok. He'll have money to go get who he wants and build the roster.

Haha ok... I trust you read JW's press release when Autry was fired? Talk about proven winner, recruiter, etc. And you saw Autry's performance the past 3 years? If you don't feel mislead, I am not sure what to tell you. It is hard to relax a bit when you see how underwhelming this hire is right now. IF, and it is an if as of now, Gerry does not KILL IT in recruiting, why exactly did we hire him?

I think this coach hiring process was flawed, and the donors made a mistake (it seems) in isolating NIL to a specific coach. It their right, but I can criticize it.

At the end I don't give a crap about receipts. My criticisms are those as a fan, and have no impact on the program. If I'm wrong about Gerry I'm happy - I hope he does well.

But we better hope they got this right. My receipts who cares -- but the receipts will damn matter for the AD and the donors who decided to influence this. Because it it doesn't go well (and that could have been for any coach coming in). this programs continues to dig a bigger and bigger hole for itself that will be even harder to get out of.
One of the biggest issues, it seems to me, was the timing. It appears to me, with no inside intel, that Sevyrud tried compel JW’s retirement so that Lyke was forced down every one’s throats. That backfired when the complaints were leaked. Then the search committee had to, in my opinion, unexpectedly find another candidate. Thus Blair.
Now Blair comes in and the coaching carousel has started. All the insider drama and backstabbing turns off initial choices. Siena wins it tournament, gets into the NCAA, and his team shows out. BB does what he can to get back in front of some other coaches, but is again rebuffed. Meanwhile, the GMac keep it in the family folks rally some NIL, public pressure grows to hire GMac (media comments), and BB is kind of stuck. What if he can’t get the primary choices, and things drag out, then GMac says to forget it. You took too long. It’s obvious I am not really wanted.

His Sienas team identity was defense. Tough man D, rarely played zone. In your face, annoying and pesky. Usually a better second half team, which was wierd as they were forced to a 5 and 6 man rotation.Rebounded better than you would expect as in the Duke game. Doty would often grab a where did he come from rebound,
Good free throw shooters, Doty like 85%.
Offense was slow but a lot of movement. Not 4 guys just standing watching one guy dribble. Hard to know what offense Gerry preferred, lost his best 3 point shooter before the season started and best scoring big man mid December. I assumed they played slow so as not to run out of gas on defense with so few players available.
