Coach Search Options after Autry

Man the one thing definitely learned here is it's time to force retire JB out of the AD's office. Really just ridiculous he can still have that kind of influence. He is no different than having Lyke the last year disrupting what ADJW was doing. Good luck to hoops, I hope GMac can turn things around but JB has to go.

I really really hope the boosters deliver here… not option 1 but he’s gonna be under the microscope so hard. All Cuse fans gotta love Gerry and hope it works out cuz it is devastating if it doesn’t.

We will all certainly find out on March 14, 2027 or sooner. I would rather be on the positive side but to each their own.
That's fine. I just think some of the pro-Gerry guys should be a little more understanding to the others who were looking to a different hire (particularly after the Red disaster) and stop being so judgmental ("taking receipts") if they don't jump on the Gerry Bandwagon within the first few hours.

Here's a thought:

Gerry has spent the last few years in ENY / in the Albany region. Any chance he has a connection with Tillery, the freshman point guard from the Albany area who ended up starting for Cincinnati this year? With his coach fire, I'm wondering if there's any opportunity for him to return?

Obviously, Tillery was a much higher caliber recruit than for siena, but there might be some connection to the AAU program, the high school, something along those lines.

That shot Gerry hit in the BET to beat Cincy will be a core memory forever. I was working in NYC and brought my dad to the game. Phenomenal seats. My dad, strong silent type, jumped up and screamed words in excitement I had only heard while holding a flashlight while he changed a tire.
Your dad was Darren McGavin

I like modelo when I am sitting in the backyard by the pool watching spots. Sort of fits the vibe
I don’t drink much but hit a local Irish sports pub to watch the tournament games a couple days ago.

Guinness specials - black & tan and black & blue. Hit the spot.

First off, congrats to GMac. You have a special place in this fan base and I really, truly hope that you're going to take us to great places. Second off, this solidifies the Syracuse administrators as the smallest-minded, cheapest, most provincial-thinking group of decision-makers in the nation. Instead of thinking forward, they're constantly thinking backwards. Instead of finding someone with a long, established track record of success, they chose the one-year track record and cost savings of Gerry and hoping that "the feels" people have for him result in big NIL donations and fan enthusiasm. Well, I hope it works. It's a lousy approach, but even a broken clock is right twice a day, etc. Go Orange.

Doty: Ok for sure, could be good starter in ACC... or at least solid 6th man at worst.

Folefac: Interesting game and he's an absolute bull... But not sure he's a 20 mins a game horse against much taller, athletic ACC players day in, day out. Minimal minutes role player at best is my guess and a guy to give starters some rest breaks.

Moesch: Really not sure...

Moesch is a poor man's Braedon Smith. Maybe better than a poor man's. Would be an upgrade at PG(not out for himself) and definately better than JJ or Carlos from the year before.

Kid is crafty, head smart, and plays hard/is a competitor/has a little Devo in him.

Here is a bunch of articles on him...

I don’t know JB but from the outside he comes across as someone who doesn’t want anyone here that might have more success than he provided.
JB will be gone 10 years before anyone could even approach 1/2 his win total. Don’t think he’s worried about this.

What MAAC player have we signed so far. Since Gerry hasn't even signed the papers yet. Man, this board. If we don't have something to be scared about, we will invent

My sentiments exactly crales.

based on nothing? I actually watch these guys coach, it's my livelihood. Gerry is a better coach. Does that mean he can run a program better? recruit better? sell better? of course not. but in between the lines? I have no dog in the fight, but It's Gerry. notice I said this before Hodgson was clueless in a half court setting in the NCAA's and only started to get back into it once down 23 and it turned to chaos. He needs a stacked deck to work with, he is a recruiter - a really good one - but nothing more. You can argue if that is simply more valuable in today's game and that'd be fair, but my point stands.

You're changing your argument now, and that's fine because it looks like he's about to get the job.

But your original point was that there was no difference in their experience; not who, subjectively, is the better coach. And the point remains that Hodgson was a less risky pick than Gerry appears to be.

Gerry is less experienced. It's a fact. But, hey, you got your guy. Let's hope for the best.

He's a good guy, an SU legend, and I hope he can have early success. The fan base is going to have super-high expectations that he will be the savior of the program.

And other signs say that we are farther down the NIL table than maybe our NIL gurus really appreciated.
Or maybe SU has messed up NIL by banning all but one group.
It's hard to say, but we don't look ready to compete.

People want Gerry to succeed. He may kick ass, or he may not be quite ready. I think his bench coaches need to change, or at least add a couple more guys. We have to raise a ton of money for him.

If he gets off to a poor start, I would be really worried. I hope he does well.

I think this coach hiring process was flawed, and the donors made a mistake (it seems) in isolating NIL to a specific coach. It their right, but I can criticize it.

At the end I don't give a crap about receipts. My criticisms are those as a fan, and have no impact on the program. If I'm wrong about Gerry I'm happy - I hope he does well.

But we better hope they got this right. My receipts who cares -- but the receipts will damn matter for the AD and the donors who decided to influence this. Because it it doesn't go well (and that could have been for any coach coming in). this programs continues to dig a bigger and bigger hole for itself that will be even harder to get out of.

The Lally's were real big Hopkins supporters, right? I wonder if they are steaming right now.
Geez, I've never met these people, but every single new thing I hear about them makes me wonder - with judgment like this, how did you make so much money?

I think GMAC bringing in players from Siena is smart. Helps other players to know what to expect and they’ve been in the system for two years.

As long as he’s not bringing in 6.
Would think some of these guys are cheap depth too which will help stretch the dollars to bring in hopefully higher end talent.

But yeah completely agreed. Bringing some guys in that know what Gerry is looking for is pretty much purely good as long as they aren't the best talent we have lol

Doty, Folefac, Moesch (via 2026 class), and maybe maybe Shoats and that should be it. For the current Syracuse guys that stay, my oh my are they in for a culture change shock. GMAC has a lot of old school characteristics that he won't put aside (good thing) that Autry did and it hurt Autry ultimately. I feel like Autry's teams play with no sense of urgency. GMAC has a Pitino demeanor to him that's really intriguing. He's not going to run the flashy schemes, etc. But his teams are going to be tough, good fundamentals, and trying to out smart the competition.

Really depends on what the NIL bag is... Can't see more than Doty and Folefac if NIL is sufficient... If he brings more Siena players in tow than that, I fear we're in trouble. But let's see how the portal goes and hope for the best.
