Coach Search Options after Autry

Can’t tell if you’re pro-GMac or forgot to use your sarcastic font
Gmac is the giant shiny red EASY button for the next hire to placate a very vocal minority of people from the BoT on down. And I think that button is going to be really hard to resist pushing.

So until the next coach starts the season, I won’t believe that Gerry is definitively out of the HC search.

Maybe it's been discussed, been off the board for a bit- is it a given that JB is pushing hard for Gerry to be the next coach?

I am making a prediction of how he will do.
I am not advocating for anyone but Gerry took over a team that won 4 games and in year 2 is at 17 while playing without his starting center and a key reserve (Reid Ducharme who we recruited to Syracuse) all year. That is pretty good. If Gerry was Gerry jones, we would like his resume. Maybe not enough to hire him but enough not to scoff at his potential hire.

Outside of a few candidates, every coach is unproven at the P4 level and has pros and cons. I think we all agree that Gerry is not the top candidate coming into this. But if he is hired, and I’m not saying he will be, we won’t know whether he is the third best option, the fifth best option, or even the 10th best option. But he may be the number one option where coaching skill, proposed salary, donor buy in, and NIL budget all align. It’s a big balancing act and more than just W’s and L’s on paper. And for the record I believe we are trying to avoid a Syracuse guy but might end up with one due to a multitude of factors that might not be attractive to an outside hire.

Oh my gosh, I just hate seeing this justification being offered already.
"If everybody wants Gerry and will pony up he money to back him ..."

If that's the decision, either they weren't willing to spend the money required to be a Top 50 program, let alone Top 25, or there is just a huge problem in the University's hiring process.

I mean, the last Chancellor was from Georgetown. Why would we insist on another SU related coach, when there are so few of them out there?

I happen to think BH is the leader in the clubhouse right now. But Gerry is very much in contention. There is also believe it or not, a question whether Gerry would take the job.

Why are folks questioning whether he’d take the job?

It’s just not a good time to bring GMAC back. I would love to see it in a decade or later if it’s meant to be. If it’s sooner than that we most likely didn’t do a good job on the hire.

We might not get that chance ( not that anyone here wants it) but he might get a job that he won't leave, I think push come to shove, he would have to take it if offered. But it wouldn't be a immediate yes I'll take it. I want to say again, considering the BOT, I would have to think BH is the leader for the job (he will take it)

Just no. No no no no no. We would not even be paying attention to anyone from the MAAC if it wasn't for Gerry being there. Certainly not a guy who has only been a head coach for 2 years! How many people have recommended the Merrimack head coach? Or St. Peters? Also, and I don't even want to entertain the idea of him coaching regardless, but how much NIL does he have to work with relative to other MAAC teams? That extra cash through cuse connections goes a lot longer of a way in the maac I would imagine. Would Doty even still be there? He has not experienced the NIL dog fight to land elite players in the portal against teams that often have more cash to work with than us. MAAC NIL battles are training wheels compared to it. He is fending off Fairfield not Alabama.

It would be the easy hire in terms of his obvious cuse ties, but everything else about it is risky as all hell. 2 years of coaching in the MAAC in a rapidly changing college basketball scene is the body of work. The program's future hangs in the balance. We are gonna risk it all on that sample size in the MAAC? Hell to the naw.

Plus, he is smart enough to know that there might just be better jobs out there for him in a year or so.
Come on Dash... In one year GMAC is getting a blue blood or close job? That is highly highly improbable. In a couple years he may be an option for a low to midpack P4 job. And that night be a stretch.

I know you are down on Cuse at the moment but the program is still attractive, if a step below where it would have been a decade ago. The idea of Gerry getting a top tier job in the very near future (unless SU goes the alumni route) is quite implausible, IMO.

How about giving a straight answer instead of dancing around whether you are in favor of Gerry or not?

You are right, we might not get that chance especially if he builds a legacy elsewhere which I will be happy and proud of him for it. JB should’ve been more aggressive about preparing and making GMAC his successor when Hopkins left. Put everyone in a very uncomfortable situation. You can say GMAC might’ve had a blessing in disguise in his favor by having the opportunity to go on his own path where he is very much on the way to a big job at Syracuse or another P4 and with merit within the next 5 years or sooner (likely not at Syracuse). Hodgson just seems like what the program needs at this time.

I am not down on Syracuse. I love Syracuse. I am just realistic from what I am hearing from people that do know. It really is that simple. As a matter of fact, I haven't posted 90% of what I have been told because 1. I don't need the aggravation from people who don't know what I have been told and they attack me for it and 2 I don't want to drop any neutron bombs on the board.

If I had to bet right now, I would say it would be BH. Especially with L. being on the search comm for the next A.D.. That can't be bad news for BH. I am just hoping that they say, well, we will throw in 10 million for NIL for the hoop team to help him along.

I find myself a big South Florida fan the rest of the year lol. Even though some of their fans are delusional and actually think USF is a better job than SU lol.
If they announced tomorrow that Hodgson will be the next coach at Syracuse and that he will finish out the season at South Florida. There is a good chance the South Florida home games have as much orange as green in the stands.

as far as hodgson goes ...and i'm really not fully informed on his body of work . but the absolute worse bargaining position to be in is " we need you more than you need us " gonna way over pay.

That won't be the case. It's not like he has lit up the NCAA tournament. He hasn't. Others would cost us a lot more dough.
