Coach Search Options after Autry

Frankly he was a massive dick, so Agreed. The difference? He wins so he gets away with it. And I support that. My main goal as a fan and a donor is to watch a winning program so I will hire a dick over a saint if it leads to more wins.
He was a dick, but he was OUR dick. That’s the difference.
I don’t want someone else’s dick.

He won that’s all that mattered

School put up w two probations, Bernie fine non story/maybe story, surly behavior, and real loosey goosey admissions for the players because he won

Had he been mediocre he was done during the Reagan administration or if he lingered during the first probation

I just want to deconstruct what wildhack saw in Autry. I get this hire was going to be a gift to Boeheim and boosters (thx guys!) but why was he better than other options like Gerry or Hopkins. Both made no sense in reality but it seems like there was zero interview process for the biggest job at SU in their sports dept

To me this is crazy. I don’t blame Autry. He’s obviously not a good coach. It’s not working but the BoT and AD have to answer for this non process.

I doubt Crouthamel hired Pasqualoni or McPherson by finger in the wind analysis or a trustee saying “trust me”

Major issue at SU until we get answers why we are ok w the “let’s see if it works” mentality.
Gerry was never getting the job over Red and Hopkins has been equally as awful running the same outdated offensive system.

I think there are some great options at the mid major level between Skinn, Hodgson, and Schertz. Skinn and Hodgson are young, well thought of in the industry, have northeast ties, and have turned lower level programs around quickly. Schertz is a proven winner wherever he goes and has northeast ties. I hope one or all of them goes on a run this year in the NCAA tournament and we swoop in and grab one of them in the spring.

Give me any proven dirtbag who can get us back on track for 4 years then hire the young promising guy please. I want syracuse to be syracuse again before throwing some unproven guy into the ringer. (I know this wont happen)

Is there any possibility we could get Anthony Grant from Dayton?

I want Josh Schertz. I think the other two are far too unproven and mostly known as well connected recruiters, which is less important in the NIL era. Scherz also has a proven modern offensive philosophy and is committed to hard nosed defense. But Wildhack needs to be prepared by February to pounce if Red isn’t working out. He needs to have worked all the behind the scenes angles and done his due diligence.

I am watching all these USF games with a keen interest in Hodgson

He was the associate HC who had more experience than Gerry that got promoted. Thats the reason. Everyone moved up a line when JB “retired”.
So Bernie fine gets the job in 2010?

Didn’t Jake pick Pasqualoni over Edsall?

I haven't read everything in this thread but elimunelson's post raises some things that I think are worth mentioning in this discussion. Thinking back to 2 and 1/2 years ago when Autry was named by ADJW as JB's successor, my recollection was it was a bit of a somewhat chaotic situation. It was announced that JB was retiring I think after a loss to WF in the first round of the ACC tournament. The timing seemed to many as a bit of surprise. As some have alluded to in this Forum it may not have been JB's choice to "retire" but that he was "retired". By whom? probably not by ADJW but he was the bearer of the news. Possibly by KS and/or the BoT. Remember, this was a time when NIL was just starting and there seemed to be a bit of controversy surrounding certain activities by AW involving potential recruits. And it later came out that the NCAA might have been nosying around about AW's activities. So the game ends, and if I recall correctly the news came out in JB's post game press conference. Everything seemed a bit chaotic at the time. It is possible that ADJW acted immediately to steady the ship and bring some order to the program and the easiest thing to do was to name AA as JB's successor. Should he have done so quickly without interviewing others? In hindsight maybe not. But in the moment he may have done what he thought was needed for the program. Obviously, he'd previously given some thought to AA succeed JB. But this wasn't a situation where JB announced in advance of his last game that he was going to retire and the Athletic Dept. had time to plan a succession. In fact, one could argue that if JB really had planned it out and wanted AA to succeed him he would have done what other Hall of Fame coaches have done -- wait until the Fall and announce his retirement at the last minute before Fall practice started so the AD had no choice but to name the next person in line. My point is - there may be more to the story than we all know.
