Coach Search Options after Autry

I thought hiring coach fb was bonkers.
But, besides that.

Coaching Experience

Eric Devendorf has a solid background in coaching and basketball. He served as an assistant strength coach for Syracuse's men's basketball team from 2016 to 2018. Following that, he worked as a special assistant to the head coach at the University of Detroit Mercy. His experience includes mentoring players and contributing to team strategies.

Player Background

Devendorf had a successful playing career at Syracuse, where he averaged 15.7 points per game in his final season. He ranks 14th on the school's all-time scoring list with 1,680 points. His time as a player, including participation in high-pressure games, gives him valuable insights into player development and game management.

Community Engagement

Devendorf is known for his active involvement in the community and his commitment to giving back. He has organized youth basketball camps and initiatives to support local businesses, showcasing his leadership and dedication to fostering the next generation of players.

Potential as a Head Coach

While Devendorf has not yet held a head coaching position, his combination of playing experience, coaching roles, and community involvement positions him as a promising candidate. His competitive nature and familiarity with the Syracuse basketball program could be advantageous in a head coaching role.
ChatGPT will come up with a BS reasoning why anybody would be a good candidate. More like artificial unintelligence amirite?

Ya, this isn’t Syracuse football. This is Syracuse Basketball. Hiring Fran Brown is completely different scenario than basketball. We need to go out and spend and get an established coach.

Football we are trying to find someone that has to overcome disadvantages. Syracuse Basketball is a step down from a blue blood. It doesn’t and shouldn’t have these disadvantages.
Actually until I Actually see it as a hire, my feeling is we won't get a highly thought of coach. I just believe that those coaches will look at what has gone on here since 2014 and feel there is a big problem. And I don't feel it's going to go away anytime soon.

Depends what highly thought of means. No one in their right mind thought Dan Hurley was the second coming of Bobby Knight a decade ago.

Throwing my hat in the ring.

1. Bob Huggins. Winning records at multiple schools!
2. Mike Brey. Force Retired but tons of experience and still wants to coach!
3. Patrick Ewing. NY ties!

I’m sorry but that’s what half you clowns sound like.

You're on drugs (not Huggs.)

I’d be happy with either Schertz or Skinns. But I think both will command big $, especially Schertz who’s won over time.

I’m sure we already have a good idea if either are attainable. I doubt Schertz is.

I also think we’ll reach out to Murray and Hodgson, for different reasons.

I would think Gerry is inquiring - I bet we quietly tell him the time isn’t right. Fans and donors are craving new blood. If he continues to succeed….he’d be a top option down the road.

And I’m sure some other up and comers will be in the mix.

I would think it’ll come down to Skinns, Murray or perhaps someone not being talked about prominently at this point (not exactly a bold prediction).

I’d love to see Melo and Bill Murray siting next to each other next year. That’d be a hoot.

This is pretty sombering post for once storied program. Its not like we are targeting other P5/6 coaches. Thanks for giving us all perspective

Hodsgon and South Florida with an 89-75 victory over Florida Atlantic this afternoon. USF outscored FAU 56-39 in the second half (Someone tell Red that is allowed) to coast to victory. There's a lot to like about Hodgson beyond his coaching ability. WNY background, has connections with prominent SU boosters, and 3 years of head coaching experience in addition to 8 years as an assistant under Nate Oats. He has to get a serious look from SU. Surprised he is not being mentioned on here as much as Schertz and Skinn are.

Why don’t you think Schertz will be attainable?

Just a gut feeling with no inside info, but I expect it to be Hodgson.
Honestly, this is the most obvious guy to take over. He’s going to be a winner. “Going” is the key word. It might be a few years of some frustrating losses at first as he is still acclimating to being a head coach. The difference is I think it will be in meaningful games. Our floor will be raised.

You’re proving my point

I’m not opposed to bringing in some dude from Australia that no one has ever heard of just so I don’t have to read the ridiculous comments that are being posted about the other candidates.

The talk and hype about him is beyond ridiculous
The hype? Do I see someone that can stabilize the program, get us back to the tournament year after year, and have appearances in the top 25 in conference play, yes. Anything above that is gravy. But a product that can reenergize the fan base and fill the dome consistently should be the goal. Intend to level up, be happy if you go to even higher levels with the guy. We may can with Hodgson eventually because if the fan base is energized and the dome is filled consistently that brings in even more dollars and even more ability to build the program to a perennial championship contender.

I have a new leader in clubhouse, name has been somewhat mentioned before is John Groce at Akron. Dude was fired at Illinois, but he wins at Akron. It’s a new era and Syracuse has the GM to help with the talent acquisition part which I think was his shortcoming at Illinois. Worth a second chance? This hire needs to be about stability and raising the floor of the program. A product the fan base will trust and reenergize the dome. You’re telling me when UConn hired Hurley they expected what they have seen from results. Maybe a guy like Groce won’t catch lightning in a bottle and perform at that level, but with the increased resources and infrastructure, he is a guy that I think will deliver reasonable results and rebuild the floor of the program atleast. Anything bigger than that is gravy.
Appreciate you bringing a new name to the table!

I know this is probably reality, but I just have a hard time accepting that, especially on the basketball side of the house.
