Coach Search Options after Autry

The same Nate Oats that is playing guys from the G League and has local corrupt donor judges in Alabama backing him up against the NCAA.

Or when one of his players was involved in a women being shot and killed and he said his player was just in the "wrong spot, wrong time".

That Nate Oats?
Same Nate Oats who has led Alabama to a 143-54 record since 2020 with a Final 4, Elite 8 and two Sweet 16's while we got to watch the Boeheim Family Reunion, losses to Colgate and Bryant, and whatever you want to call the last three years. At least we have a Nice Guy at the helm now

it’d be negligence not at least reaching out to Oats. There’s not a sane opinion out there for why not, including Jb’s

I can see the pitch now:

"We can only pay you half as much as you're getting in the SEC, and you'll have a fraction of the NIL resources to work with that you do at Alabama... but Dinosaur BBQ!!!"

I was team Skinn for most of the year. But after watching a lot of USF, I really think it would be a mistake to overlook a coach who has always wanted to be here and has one of the best scoring offenses in the country.

Pair him with a great defense-minded coach, and it would be great.

For arguments sake if it was Hodgson certainly Tobin Anderson would join him I think. No stranger to upstate NY either.

I didn't realize that Anderson was on Hodgson's staff at USF. I'm guessing Hodgson would bring a lot of his staff with him, but would look to add a couple heavy hitters.

Yeah! Make him “say no” to that. You gotta try.

In no universe will SU be reaching out to Nate Oats.

Like I said before, I don't think he will be the best Xs and Os coach on the market, but he is going to bring passion to the program, he wants to be here badly, he has an offensive system that scores a ton of points and plays at a fast pace, and he is known to be a great recruiter.

I think that is what we need, we need excitement back in the program. We need someone who is passionate about the program and can sell it to the community, donors, and recruits. Give me some fire on the sidelines, give me someone who will coach our players hard. Give me someone who is loud and proud publicly. I think the program needs that we need a spark; we need to light a fire in this program again.

Normally, I would be all for the best Xs and Os coach, but I think our needs for a rebuild here are a little different, and I think his offensive system works at the P4 level with the right talent, as seen in 'Bama.

Hoiberg’s a favorite (maybe THE favorite) for NCOY. Doubt he’d be interested in coming here and even more skeptical we can pay him. He’s going to command $6M+.
Hoiberg was born in Lincoln, Nebraska and his parents went to Nebraska. His kid plays there. Fred now has that program rolling like never before.

Fred is Midwest through and through. He has also owned a cabin for a long time in Minnesota that he loves to go to.

Kansas maybe but otherwise he is happy at Nebraska.

I hope the next coach recognizes his weaknesses and fills his staff accordingly instead of just randomly or giving positions to friends.

Less than elite recruiter, hire an elite recruiter. Great on offense but not as great on defense, hire an elite defensive coach.

Yeah but how’s his iso plays look?
I saw a recent interview with Hodgson where he talked about playing and scoring fast. But he also mentioned that he has "over 300" half court sets and most of those are to take advantage of mismatches by isolating defenders. He designs sets based on advance scouting and analytics of the next team on the schedule. He said there are basic sets that can adapted to multiple combinations just by changing a couple of words in the play call. He also uses analytics to set up his players to get the shots they are most efficient at.

ISO offense is not a bad thing when it is run at this level of sophistication.

Weak conference.
Anything else? His team right now if they were in the ACC would be close to the middle of the pack. I’m sure he has areas he would look to upgrade on his roster if he were in the ACC. Also it’s literally his first year in the American and they are in contention. Same thing with Arkansas State in contention both years as a head coach. Pretty sure the guy is a winner as a head coach.

A man with a plan. Hodgson is basically a Will Wade type coach without the baggage.

Yeah, there are plenty of coaches that run sophisticated X and O concepts based on analytics and scouting. That quality needs to be an absolute criteria for the next hire. Along with a history of success and program building. Young, successful up and comer from a lower level seems like a good place to start.

As you mentioned, character issues matter a lot to this administration. Hodgson's back story, his work with Big Brothers/Sisters, Coaching Love foundation, have a Fran Brown-like vibe.
