Coach Search Options after Autry

IMO, we don’t have to fire HCAA right now; however we can begin our national search now,

So that the incoming coach can hit the ground running!

I think it's going to be pretty clear in the end that SU is going to hire Hodgson because he wants to be at Cuse more than Schertz or Skinn, which for them is probably closer to a new rung on the career ladder.
To be crystal clear, all of this stuff is still just speculation on a fan board. Some opinions are more reasonable possibilities than others. But, nothing is clear about who will be on the list, who will be interviewed, or who is even interested in the position.

True, however so much of what appears on this board or any other fan site is just that!

I see how down on the program so many are here and I understand. Let's be clear though... there will be no shortage of very, very good candidates that will be interested in this job.

I’m not as close to these potential coaches as you guys.

Which one of these guys rules his program with an iron fist? I cannot handle more good cop, good cop garbage on the hill.

I want to see a bad cop on the bench tearing into players, ripping apart refs. Hell I don’t care if some stupid podcaster shows up asking stupid questions at a presser if he wants to call them a moron.

One of the biggest issues we had was just saying it was good enough to sneak in tournaments and saying it was ok to be mediocre as long as we were nice about it.

I agree with this.

Hodgson, he is a boss on the sideline

In a situation like this, are asst coaches and Red still recruiting? I assume you go status quo as though you are going to make a run.
For now, they would still be recruiting. However, we haven’t seen any recruiting success for next year.

More so now than even 3 years ago.

Examples? What would he do with Benny Williams?
I would try to describe it, but you just have to watch a game to get a feel. He’s just locked in. I have no idea how he would handle a Benny Williams situation. Though, if we have immature players under Hodgson which is not ideal, I feel more confident in Hodgson and his system that he we will get the best talent wise out of them on the court than what we’ve had recently with immature players (I guess Q produced well for Syracuse). I just have a feeling we would be in very good hands with Hodgson at Syracuse. If he somehow ends up at a conference foe that is scary. I just think he is going to be a big time College Basketball coach wherever he ends up. He has specific passion for Syracuse being a fan of the program. Worked his way up the hard way, he was not a big time player with name recognition. I hope Syracuse gives him the platform at the highest stage of the game.

I saw a recent interview with Hodgson where he talked about playing and scoring fast. But he also mentioned that he has "over 300" half court sets and most of those are to take advantage of mismatches by isolating defenders. He designs sets based on advance scouting and analytics of the next team on the schedule. He said there are basic sets that can adapted to multiple combinations just by changing a couple of words in the play call. He also uses analytics to set up his players to get the shots they are most efficient at.

ISO offense is not a bad thing when it is run at this level of sophistication.

For sure. Which is also not what we’ve seen in the last 10+ years

Hoiberg was born in Lincoln, Nebraska and his parents went to Nebraska. His kid plays there. Fred now has that program rolling like never before.

Fred is Midwest through and through. He has also owned a cabin for a long time in Minnesota that he loves to go to.

Kansas maybe but otherwise he is happy at Nebraska.
I think Kansas fans have their sights higher, like Dusty May or Oats. Self also brought in Jacque Vaughn over the summer and while he doesn't have college experience, some of the rationale was that he would be the top in-house option to keep the hiring from being a UK-level circus if they didn't get a top external target. He's already had to coach a game that Self missed due to health problems.

Hoiberg's probably in the #5-8 range on their call list, if I had to guess. TJ Otzelberger and Grant McCasland are probably higher up but in the same neighborhood.

Hodgson has been linked to SU since the fall as a possible replacement. Gotta believe he will be among the front runners.

Takayo Siddle, UNC Wilmington is an interesting name to track for ACC openings. Headed for 5th straight 20 win season (18-3 currently). 39 years old. Plays aggressive style at both ends. Has done well with NIL. Played and coached at NC State.
Yep…

I can see the pitch now:

"We can only pay you half as much as you're getting in the SEC, and you'll have a fraction of the NIL resources to work with that you do at Alabama... but Dinosaur BBQ!!!"
You’d be surprised what resources can be pulled together here when the opportunity presents itself. Just gotta get Oats to open up a channel for discussion. We could fail to meet the financial requirement but we’d be more competitive than most would think.

Exactly. I also think a lot of posters blame this situation on Wildhack, and are overly negative because now they don't think he can make a good basketball choice. I have a feeling that we end up with a hire that satisfies a shockingly large percentage of this message board.
