Coach Search Options after Autry

Not all HC's are qualified and not all AC's should be eliminated.
We need a thorough search for the most qualified person we can afford. Sometimes the assistant is the brains behind the operation. See Clemson football after the DC left.

I understand it from an optics standpoint and our situation, but I think it would be foolish not to consider someone just because they don’t have head coaching experience.

I disagree that we should seriously consider a ass't coach. I think there is a good chance that Murray becomes a really good head coach. However, he has never built a staff. He has never run a major operation like ours. Just too much risk when we can hire a proven Head Coach.

You can find anecdotal examples but the prevailing normal of successful teams in this new era (ignoring the Izzos, selfs, fews of the world) have been HCs before their major P5 stop. Which makes sense, leading a program in the NIL era goes well beyond coaching

Experience alone is normally a pretty bad indicator of job performance. And it’s highly unlikely that we’ll hire someone who has run a major operation like ours, anyway. Choices are likely:
1) someone who has run a much smaller operation not like ours.
2) someone who has helped someone run a major operation like ours.

FWIW - I do think option 1 is better, but I hope they don’t ignore a good candidate who is under option 2.

That’s probably true but not as important as in the past. Biggest $$$$ bring the biggest recruits. I site Indiana football. Great portal work and although not loaded with 5 stars loaded with Rey good older players. That is the best use of $$$$.

Id argue we get too fixated on prior HC experience. What I’d like to see is a proven coach, in general, with the ability to run an offense.

This may stir the pot but Autry’s tenure as an Assistant at Syracuse was lukewarm at best and the last 10-15 years of JB’s era yielded average bench coaches post-Fine and Hop. Autry deserved a shot at a Siena, not Cuse. The error was forcing an in house hire, not hiring an assistant.

When the program was rolling (03-14) and Hop had been named HCIW, it totally made sense.

When the program was declining after Hops departure, the fixation on that solution made no sense. I didn't see a viable option on the bench. Hop was pursued by others (SBU, USC?, UW) Autry and Gmac, not so much. I know, it was the politics of JB and BOT that forced this but it was such a shortsighted, blinders on, lazy solution.

I think that ship has sailed and I see it as unlikely. However, Calipari left Kentucky due to extreme pressure and under performing in the tournament. Andy Enfield left USC for SMU, due to underperforming and dealing with Lebron and his son. That then allowed Eric Musselman to get out of the SEC and Arkansas and go to USC so there have been instances where coaches look for a new landing spot in a sort of lateral move.

What will work against SU is if some bigger job unexpectedly comes open. So we almost want to see UNC perform so they dont fire Davis, Bill Self stays in good health, Tom Izzo winning and being the old coach who continues to hang around, etc.

I’m skeptical we will be willing to pay for a top tier coach since that will be significantly more than Red made. I’m skeptical that we can attract top recruits without money that doesn’t exist and a top tier coach we aren’t going to hire. I’m confident that without the top tier coach and recruits, Syracuse will not be a consistent winner.

In the new landscape where the SEC decided to compete in basketball - I’m not sure what the viable route to prominence for Syracuse basketball is. It might be to hire an affordable guy with lower level head coaching experience, hope he does well enough to make the job look more attractive - and hire a long term replacement when that guy bolts to a higher paying job. So I will be shocked if a huge number of people on here aren’t shocked and disappointed at whomever we hire.

Fair. Well then I guess the answer is they’ll just keep expanding the March madness bracket until there’s 96 teams.

Midmajor players and coaches will all move up to P5 every year or who knows midseason.

P5 will be putting in 10-12 teams per conference and every other random conference will be a 1 bid league.

Better gig than you would think, sure. Syracuse has a much higher ceiling for success than Providence. The game changed for Syracuse at the wrong time when we were not being serious about our product.
