More to do with pace than anything. They rank 15th in possessions per game.

Same with Alabama I think it was last year they were #1 in offense PPG and almost dead last in defense PPG. It has to do with the pace of play and each team getting tons of possessions.

I agree, I like a couple of coaches over Hodgson but I am not going to cry about someone who brings passion back to the program and a fast-paced offense that scores tons of points. He is my floor, and we can do way worse than that.

I said in another post that eventually we may need to move on from him if it is championship or bust, as I am not sure that style can win it all but for a quick fix with everything that is wrong with the program Hodgson would be a great plug-and-play type coach.

Just trying to piece it together though I can be completely wrong. I don't blame the BOT hiring Kent Syverud, he was very qualified and respected and at that time Syracuse dealing with the basketball sanctions, they needed someone of his pedigree to steady the ship and show we are serious, that is the persona Syverud gave off. But he was never the best culture fit at Syracuse long term. There was good and bad in his tenure. Not enough good though ultimately to where I think he stayed way past his value offering to Syracuse. Things kind of started to get sour with his tenure around 2019. I think he lasted so long after because three of those academic years the University had to deal with the most unprecedented thing to happen in most of our lifetimes, the pandemic which led directly into the most radical changes in the college athletic landscape of our lifetimes that no one really knew what was happening. Things have somewhat stabilized, we are going to be better on the blueprint for a successful Syracuse University and Syracuse athletics product moving forward.

If he were still at Arkansas State, I might agree with you, but a first time head coach in a terrible program and just having a winning season is something good. Him having to win a conference tournament in a one-bid league in his first season as a head coach in that program isn't going to be a deciding factor. The fact that he has the program that was dead #1 in the conference and a top 10 offense in college basketball is an accomplishment.

If he were still at Arkansas State, I might agree with you, but a first time head coach in a terrible program and just having a winning season is something good. Him having to win a conference tournament in a one-bid league in his first season as a head coach in that program isn't going to be a deciding factor. The fact that he has the program that was dead #1 in the conference and a top 10 offense in college basketball is an accomplishment.

It will be hard not to hire Hodgson if he gets USF to the tournament.

There are a ton of contrary reports on the Father being a good guy. None of which good or bad should impact us hiring the son or not.

By Evan Miya, they're 14th. So, ranked consistently in pace. They're also 4th in their conference in defense and No. 1 in offense as well as best overall. He's done a great job with a non-basketball school. By BBall Ref's simple rating system, this is USF's best season ever. He's not going to match the most wins ever, but he's having a great first season.

I don't know who the next coach will be or if they will return the program to its previous heights, but Hodgson seems like a great candidate to try.

I like Hodgson but I would push back a bit on the USF being bad stuff. Hodgson inherited a program that was on the upswing from Amir Abdur Rahim (younger brother of Shareef), who died unexpectedly just before last season was supposed to start. Unbelievable tragedy, and he had done an incredible job with that program in just one year. He might’ve been a great hire for us, in fact.

Hodgson inherited a program that was on the upswing from Amir Abdur Rahim (younger brother of Shareef), who died unexpectedly just before last season was supposed to start. Unbelievable tragedy, and he had done an incredible job with that program in just one year. He might’ve been a great hire for us, in fact.

There was a gap year in between, with them going 13-19, and not many players from the 25-8 NIT team are on the team today. A few, maybe only 1 player, if my memory serves me correctly. I can look later but I am pretty sure it was a complete roster turnover. They are good because Nelson has followed Hodgson from Arkansas State he probably could have gone to higher D1. Nelson is the best player in that conference this year.

Historically, they are 728-889 with a few tournament appearances in the last 50 years.

That gap year (last season) was when there was an interim coach after Amir died in October right before the season began. That season is almost a wash. That said, I like Hodgson a lot and think him allegedly wanting the job says a lot about the upside of our program. And as you said, Hodgson had to rebuild the roster.

I listened to his podcast, agreed with the most part on his reads and takes on Syracuse that is based on "sources". He brought on a recent Syracuse grad as a "guest" that suggested that if Wildhack is making the next hire they should slap the "interim" tag on Engelstad for next season and allow the next AD to make the hire. That would be crazy. We should move our games to the Melo Center and save money on the operating costs of the dome if that's the case. I think Wildhack interview on Orange Nation yesterday provided tea leaves. Granted this may seem like I'm making H0T Takes. I think it's very possible that Wildhack was able to go above the Chancellor to the Board of Trustees to get himself an extra year to take power away from the Chancellor from making the next AD hire. Isn't it interesting that around July of last year Heather Lyke comes in after being the AD at Pitt, reporting to not only the AD, but the Chancellor. I think Kent Syverud wanted Lyke in charge, but the main thing that could confirm that is her following Kent to Michigan in whatever capacity to prove that she was likely a Syverud hire. I think Wildhack announcement yesterday was very calculated on timing and I think they are much further along in having ducks in a row on all three major positions including Chancellor, AD, and the next Men's Basketball Coach than what is publicly out there currently. It's honestly funny because before the Fran Brown hire, I didn't trust Wildhack, but I actually do now and I think him staying the extra year was something he did for the best interest of Syracuse athletics which many here believe that successful Syracuse athletics and championship level Syracuse athletics is in the best interest of Syracuse University. I think we're headed to Haynie as Chancellor, Theodorakis as AD, and Hodgson as the next Men's Basketball coach.

Some of which sounds like GMAC. I'm not saying he's a good coach or bad coach but when you're resume building and you want a major P4 HC job it says more about your ability to take a bad program and get a bid. Otherwise he's not a big deal. There are probably dozens like him.
