Coach Search Options after Autry

At some point some negative press has to come out. This isn’t like picking the next club volleyball coach. This is the AD position. People should know the actual background of her
Which the committee is there for? I mean one hundred percent that comes up in the review and selection process. I mean there's no way a new Chancellor and a BoT committee would just gloss over a person's experience. Especially with all the back channel discussions that would happen in this situation. Guarantee a guy like Lally or Tirico has a call off the record with someone at Pitt to get the full picture.

"Lyke was fired in September 2024. And she left quite the mess behind.
Today, Pitt’s athletic department is in shambles. The football team is losing some of its top players in the transfer portal. The men’s basketball team is unwatchable. The women’s team is equally bad and is allegedly an even a bigger issue off the court. And some non-revenue sports might not be around much longer.

What went wrong

Lyke had a noted desire for “comprehensive excellence,” treating every Pitt athletic team with equal importance. While in theory this was a fair stance, in reality, that’s simply not how the world of college athletics works.
Two sports matter above all else: football and men’s basketball. If those two programs do well, there is more money for all. Lyke’s inability to appropriately allocate resources toward what actually mattered has brought Pitt to where it is now.
Her most notable misstep was the Victory Heights initiative, an ambitious multi-sport facility that would serve as a replacement to the aging Fitzgerald Field House."

“For far too long, a significant percentage of our student-athletes have been forced to compete in facilities that do not reflect the lofty standards and aspirations of the University of Pittsburgh,” Lyke said in a university issued press release in 2023. “Today’s announcement is the first step in transforming that liability into a game-changing asset in our quest for comprehensive excellence.”
Lyke’s heart was in the right place. She wasn’t wrong to believe Pitt’s current athletic facility for those sports was outdated. But she ignored one key component that makes or breaks every major decision made in today’s world of college athletics: money.
Lyke signed up for a $240 million project with little to no funding secured beforehand. She hoped her big swing would inspire alumni to donate more. It did not. And to make things worse, that facility, whenever it is finished, will add no legitimate revenue moving forward.
Lyke also wasted money on her numerous coaching hires and firings. She gained notoriety in town for canning nine head coaches in her first two years in Oakland. Some coaches were dismissed with remaining years on their contract, meaning Pitt was paying two head-coach salaries for one non-revenue sport — again, meaning that the additional money spent wasn’t ever going to be recuperated.
Her final major sin pertains to NIL, the biggest determining factor of success in today’s college sports. Some athletic directors immediately embraced the concept when it was legalized in 2021. Lyke, instead, pushed back.
When seeking donation money from alumni, the Victory Heights project or other athletic facility upgrades took priority over laying the foundation of a productive and competitive NIL collective. Rather than learning innovative ways for Pitt to compete in the NIL space, Lyke was known to speak against the concept as a whole, at times even encouraging other ACC athletic directors to do the same, per multiple sources.
Even when things seemed great during Lyke’s tenure, time would eventually prove those days to be nothing more than a house of cards. Pitt athletics fell way behind the times under her leadership, and by the time the university acted, it was already too late."
I am having flashbacks to the Cantor/Gross years…

I will let jncuse do the heavy lifting here, but to say USF isn't making the tournament tells me you just don't want him as coach.

They are in almost 90% of the Bracket Matrix brackets. Currently, their NET is 52. Much lower NET teams have gotten at-large bids. 2-2 in Q1 wins. It wouldn't be difficult at all to see them winning the American tournament. They will certainly be favored to do so.

Purely based on my review of the bracket matrix, USF is getting in the tournament right now as conference champion... 113 of 121 have them as the auto-bid from the American based on their first place standing... some also put the best team in NET as their auto bid on the matrix, which is why a few have Tulsa as I assume they go back and forth with USF in NET (52 vs 55). They are ranked as the best #12 team seed... the first team outside of those getting at-large bids. Your classic dangerous 12 seed - so they are not a bad team at all.

Based on the fact that they have the top record in the AAC (11-3 vs 10-5), the top NET and they have won 5 in a row and 8 of 9, they are certainly the favourites for the auto-bid.

Would they get an at-large if they don't win their conference? Not very likely based on the matrix... the matrix has the last at-large team at 10.98 seed vs 11.93 seed for USF. So doesn't appear many have USF as potential at-large candidate.

Its going to be hard for them to get another Q1 win. So I think they have to win the American to get in, which they have good chances of doing.

If they don't get in the tournament, they will probably be a top 3 seed in the NIT.

This statement terrifies me. This is the exact opposite approach Syracuse University needs to take given our unique position as a private university competing in the P4 with both a proud football and basketball traidition.

You really think the university gives 2 t. sh#T’s what people should know. They don’t and wont, we are talking politics and immage and they don’t.

For a university who likes to sit with there tail between there legs a lot and make very odd decisions based on there image and what they think looks right, I find it crazy she has a good chance to be the next AD with everything that’s being said about her time at Pitt.

Mike Hopkins getting a legitimate look, with the current state of the program, goes to show the deep-rooted issues with the decision-makers at the university.

The fact that they are even entertaining it because he’s got some old friends that are willing to back him indicates that they have learned nothing.

I know he’s very likely not to get the job, but just the fact that it’s something we have to discuss is blasphemy.
I would not say very likely to not get it

We don’t have very many 3 point makers. Therein lays the problem.
We don’t have a lot and could probably use 1 more guy for that but, betsey, kingz and when Donnie and George take good open shots can hit from deep.

Signals a change, we’ll see if it’s for the better or worse. It’s not great now anyway lol.

Thank you.

They have a chance at a couple more Q2 wins - at Memphis and if they play Tulsa or Wichita St. in the American tournament. If they win both, that would give them a Q1/Q2 record of 8-5.

Hop interviewing at BC. They want him apparently. But he’s making waves for cuse job too. He’s got full court press on
wow - didn't see this coming from his side.
Maybe he reads the board.

Or based on the poll, maybe he doesn't.

IMO, I'd like some of our kids to stay so we can see what they do with a different coach.

We're disposed of too many kids lately who have turned out OK with different leadership.
I agree with this 100%. That is why I am a proponent of an announcement before the end of the season. Give a new coach time to build excitement and recruit guys like Nate Kingz (if he gets a waiver) to come back.

Before the end of who's season? If its Bh we can't announce it until the end of usf season. Can you really tell any of the players who you are planning on hiring, and trusting it won't leak?

Glad to read that Hodgson is in the lead (for now).

I’m trying to convince myself Hop is a viable option I could get behind. Yes, the fan support might be lacking in the beginning, but the vibe I’m getting from those in the know is Hop is a man on a mission. I could see him having a giant chip on his shoulder and a mindset of unfinished business at Syracuse. If he can leverage that into a great staff to support his coaching weaknesses, getting donor support, and recruit, maybe he can reestablish the path that was set for him back when he was named coach in waiting.

Wishful thinking, but possible?
