Coach Search Options after Autry

It would be irresponsible to only have a 2-man list, especially considering when we hired Red we didn’t even interview anyone externally.

I’m sure there is a lengthy list but it’s obvious who the top few candidates are
Just to be clear there was at least one external candidate who was interviewed. The decision to hire Red has been overly simplified.

I dont think that's it. But you have to imagine they're looking at the finances too. And rev share has had a big impact on the bottom line. You could run things at breakeven before. All of a sudden you have a $20M hit. If someone comes along and says they could raise a lot of money...I think a lot of people would listen.
Yup. The next few seasons, across both football and men’s hoops, will likely determine if SU can compete in the new world of professional college athletics.

I just hope we have the sense to acknowledge if we can’t, instead of stringing everyone along for years and having them throw good money after bad.

Correct, they are mutually exclusive. Just because they are successful in their personal life or their other business endeavors doesn't mean they know what it takes to run an athletic department or what to look for in a basketball coach. Smart people make dumb decisions all the time, and I have seen smart people make the same mistakes over and over again.
Right or wrong, I am certain there are members of the BoT who genuinely believe that their duty is to support what they believe is in the best interests of university as a whole. This may or may not coincide with what is in the best interest of the athletic dept.

FWIW, I believe that what's in the best for university from a long-term revenue perspective is exactly aligned with what is in the best interests of the football program followed closely by mens basketball. Let's hope that the new Chancellor and AD see it the same way.

It's been alluded to but I haven't seen a definitive explanation-
We know that the AD is the one who informs a coach if they're being terminated. We know the AD is the one who formally extends a job offer to a coach or coach's agent.
What is the actual, official, required role of the chancellor in both of those actions? And of the BoT?

Hypothetically... could an AD, knowing they're on their way out (to retire) anyway, go rogue and fire/hire without chancellor or BoT? Maybe come to an agreement in principle with coach/agent that would still be legally binding if the university tried to nullify it?

I don't think folks inside the orange bubble (present company excluded) can fathom the hit hiring Hop would create to the already-diminishing brand perception of the basketball program nationally.

Hiring a losing coach who made 1 tournament in 7 years as our replacement for the longtime assistant...it would put the end of Boeheim to shame. One PR person could tell you this would be a total disaster for our brand.

Hire Hodgson and win. It’s as simple as that. Too much focus on money. The B12 is dirt poor compared to other conferences and still runs circles around us because of the coaching.

Hops ceiling is probably Eric Musselman at best.

There was a window for Hop to be successful at Cuse.

A DECADE AGO.

But JAB overstayed his welcome, and Hop didn’t want to be the guy who forced his mentor to retire when he clearly did not want to.

Here we are a decade later, but Hop is no longer the answer, nor is any other guy who:
- happens to be a coach currently AND
- happened to have been a guard at Cuse under JAB.

There is NO sane universe where that 2nd criteria carries any weight in making the best possible HC hire.

And yet…. here we are.
Again.

WTAF??!!
Have we learned NOTHING??

You do NOT make a “continuity hire” when the ongoing trajectory has been that of a train going over a cliff.

I think the answer to that is unequivocally...No

I love Hopkins for what’s it worth I’d be thrilled if he were our next HC sorry if that makes people mad
I don't think your feelings are what people would be mad about if that transpired. A lot of us here love Hop, but we don't want him as head coach.

As for myself, i don't want an SU alum to be our next HC as I feel we need to start anew - a gut-reno of the program, if you will.

We need a school that the football team can be proud of.

Ehhh, people in successful organizations push crappy ideas or their buddies for jobs all the time.
This sounds like my kids when they try to justify stupid behavior.

But everyone else is doing it too!

Bh has proven he can win, hop hasn't. From everything you hear he is also good at raising money as well. Some of you are stuck in the 2000s. It's 2026 it's time to move on.

You know Allen Griffin has the popcorn ready

Jason Hart on that short list as well…
Like him and how aggressive he was as player and seems to be as a coach.

Would the Nil dry up if we won? That was the basis of my question about the Saudi Prince. If it was Hopkins and the money enabled us to get really great players and we won, would that springboard a lot more Nil money and allow us to continue to be good?
My premise was that we would not win (or at least not for long) based on Hop's history of having great players without great results. Would love to be wrong if that comes to pass.

What’s Hart accomplished as coach? What’s his philosophy? UK may be the most underperforming team in power conferences this year. They have 20 plus million dollars. People here would think he wouldn’t have enough NIL.
