Coach Search Options after Autry

It's a small world after all. From 10 years ago.

I think the last time Syracuse had NET better than 40 was in 2021 (No. 37).
The decline has been depressing.

But, there is now opportunity. Haynie's own words: “We are a university where our economic model is largely driven by student tuition, room and board. And if one of the reasons students are enthusiastic about Syracuse University is being at a university with top tier athletics… that means we need to be a university with top tier athletics.” This is monumental for those of us who care about the sports program.

Since Haynie is openly stating that elite athletics drive enrollment, brand visibility and student enthusiasm, I expect the AD and HC hires will fully align with this core belief.

There is a new sense of urgency here...finally.

Correct, that is why a Carp/Hodgson duo hire to start off this new era makes the most sense. Will it work out? Who knows too many variables to know for sure but these would be the two correct choices and gives us the best immediate chance.

From the outside looking in, I agree that combination seems to make the most sense...by a long shot. If the Hop money is real, front loaded, and guaranteed, it is reasonable to assume that could make things a little more complicated - even though my personal belief is that thinking is short sighted.

It’s true and Hodgson may be the better fit for Syracuse. Schertz is great too, but I’ve pretty much have come to the conclusion that Hodgson needs to be the first full court press candidate. Just now the field of 68, Goodman and Dauster were talking about Providence and they were saying Hodgson should be number 1 for them even before Schertz because of the fit from a culture perspective. Goodman also points out that South Florida had a 1/4 of the Memphis budget this season. Goodman does say though that Hodgson might have Syracuse on the table and others.
That’s interesting. Do you think those two are just throwing crap at a wall suggesting Hodgson and PC would be a good match? Or is it informed speculation? I would think SU back-channeling with agents for one or two of our top candidates has already happened, and the mutual interest has at least been confirmed. I can’t imagine Hodgson would pick Providence over Syracuse.

The bigger question now is about all that NIL money Melo was organizing and floating around Hop… and just where this outcome puts all of that money…
I've read so much stuff on this website that I can't remember where the rumors end and my own speculation starts.

With that qualifier out of the way, I'd imagine that outside of what comes from Melo himself (and maybe a few more), all of the money that would be given to Hop goes away with another hire. Hopkins is a likeable guy with connections to NBA talent. I would hazard a guess that a lot of those guys are pitching in a little bit because they like Hopkins. If that's the case, they couldn't care less about Syracuse.

I'll reiterate that those thoughts are pure speculation. But I believe the logic is sound, at least.

That said, Hopkins is still a clear second place choice for me, even with the money. Maybe even lower, depending on who's actually interested in the job.

Agree 100% but I fear Hop is still on the race!

I am sure we will start to hear Hodgson's name come up more often now, especially for East Coast jobs. Syracuse would be in the driver's seat, but there will be competiton they need to be prepared.

(Speaking of Memphis I can see an upset tonight shhhhhh)

Only chance at an at-large would appear to be running the table and losing in American finals, preferably against WSU.

Melo needs to support the program no matter who the coach is.
It is Melo's money to do with what he wants.
And frankly, after donating for the Melo center, I think no one has the right to gripe if he decides to spend his money differently.
My guess is he is backing Hopkins because he knows and trusts him.
Probably does not know Hodgson hardly at all.

Love Melo and everything he has done for the program, the natty, the melo center facility, etc... but dangling a big bag of cash to force Hop in as coach is NOT how we should be making this coaching hire decision.

It just isn't smart.

We should actually be smart about this next hire...

We're cleaning up a legacy hire mistake with this next hire as it is... We should not be doing a similar thing again becuase it feels "comfortable" to "hire a friend".

And not for nothing, but you know who could sell Melo on his vision for the job??

Hodg the Shark could.

I bet he could sell it well too, and Melo would like what he would hear, particularly for his kid's development, etc... I hope that convo gets to happening at least... The guy isn't one of the best recruiters in the country by luck.

If it's Hop or nada bag from Melo, OK... His money, his prerogative to do what he wants with it...

But coaching actually matters - A LOT. We've all learned that much.

That’s a very reasonable take.

Hopefully at a minimum if it’s anyone outside Hop, Hodgson seemingly the likely option, there is at least an opportunity for a discussion with everyone putting up their potential support whether it has any impact or not.

I am sure if the choice is Hodgson him and Melo will have a conversation.

So far, even if it took some pressure from a number of interested parties, logic and thoughtfulness will prevail across the board. Despite the craziness seems optimism should be up on this front too that everyone will at least entertain finding common ground for everyone’s benefit.
