Coach Search Options after Autry

I wonder how much money Syracuse burned on basketball the last decade being nice to Jim Boeheim and letting him run things. In the last three years they have had to have lost $20-30m in wasted salaries and lost revenue to have a .500 club that is utterly irrelevant in the ACC.
I blame the University 10000x more than Boeheim.

We’re not talking about any of these candidates or a bright future right now had Boeheim never helped the University get its head out of its rear and start fundraising for the programs future. We existed on ticket sales and dome revenue for decades. Amazing.

I say that as a guy ultra critical of Jim.

Yeah, I can agree with you, it was a match made in hell though. I don't have a love affair for the shortsighted BoT and Admin going back a couple of chancellors. Sports revenue streams were a piggy bank to raid and the largesse was going to keep flowing, why wouldn't it? And when it started to get scary, they panicked and kowtowed to Jim thinking that would keep the money coming. It didn't.

GMac struggling with recruiting was the most talked about aspect of his tenure here. By far.
And supposedly Red was a great recruiter, yet all his big gets since he became head coach were great big duds. Talent but pretty bad intangibles.
My guess is part of the reason GMAC supposedly whiffed on some big recruits (would love to have some names by the way) is either JAB or Red didnt close the deal or maybe didnt want the person.
Based on things GMAC said when he took over Siena, he valued certain intangibles (willing to work, coachability, maturity, leadership) as highly as talent. Which to be fair is a way to differentiate in the MAAC.

As I said, without researching it, I have no clue who he recruited successfully and who he whiffed on.

I do know he recruited Maliq Brown who was pretty much the entire package.
Defensive player of the year and sixth man of the year in the ACC.

He recruited Doty for SU. Red said a great big no - waste of a scholarship.
Considering the bodies we had the last 2 years, I find that laughable.
2nd place player of the year in the MAAC but apparently not worth an end of the bench scholarship for SU.

So this one. I read the Yahoo article which cites the Sporting News. The Sporting News article cites our own Neil Adler's article about a list of 10 potential guys.

So I would say there's no actual reporting that he's a target or interested at this time. More an interesting name.
100 percent right. That was just a list of guys who might be interesting for SU to target. Spot on, my friend!

I’m fully in camp BH but if Gerry is the hire we need max funds for the staff and 15 mil plus for multiple years locked in. Essentially have Hop level money (as previously shared ) for Gerry.
What I'm saying is: the money if Gerry is the hire might be less than if Hodgson is the hire. If the donors are not excited about Gerry turning the program around, they're not going to waste their money to build his roster.

It is what it is.

The administration knows there is a divide amongst supporters on hiring inhouse vs. outside program on this hire, and that a large subset of fanbase will not support another inhouse hire as significantly this time around.

If they go with an in-house hire anyways, there will be likely be a fair mount of hat-in-hand groveling for incremental support due to the shortfall of fans that do not support that direction, but I am not sure they are going to be successful or convincing many in that argument.

People want change now. Period... and those that want that change have been very patient about it over this last 3 years with Red.

If they go in-house again, they are making their bed and will have to lay it as far as diminished support goes.

It's definitely a known dynamic and risk, and part of the reason GMAC is likely cool on the gig currently (or at least has major concerns.) He should be concerned about it too.

If BH is the guy I fully expect he will be all in to connect with the SU family , pay homage to the past and mend relationships that could have been a bit soured after things Oats said and the handshake line incident with Trey. His comment towards Red as being a friend to me is a very early public start to that but I expect he will make it a priority to sell and implement his vision while integrating and honoring the past much like Fran.

Oh I was tracking with you which is why I added my comment on top.

Hodgson coached at SU basketball camps, it's not like he's unknown to the program.

Goodman says GMax to Cuse and BH to Providence but he’s an idiot

Goodman isn't directionally off here - BH fits Cuse, but he also fits Providence.

If Providence puts together a far more compelling package (comp + NIL) I could see him choosing them. At the margins, I think he chooses SU, but it's not as simple as, "We want Hodgson, so we get him."

This new admin will be put to the test early if they really believe in putting their money where their mouth is.

Siena had the 2nd easiest conference schedule in the MAAC - and they finished 7th out of 13 in defense despite playing the 2nd worst schedule. This was in the 5th worst conference in The country.

They were the best offense while in conference play in the MAAC,

Katie, is there one single thing Gerry has done in his entire life that was less than perfect? Just one? Drink milk out of the carton? Fart in bed?

I’m confused. What fundraising did Boeheim do to ensure our future? Jim’s a lot of things, but forward thinking has never been one of them. This is a guy who didn’t want to join the Big East or play in the Dome.

Not sure he did it himself, but he was the driving force that pushed the university to consider asking alumni for donations and raising funds outside of revenue. During his tenure. Scary.

"I hope the $ goes up" If Gerry's hiring doesn't excite donors, the money isn't going to go up. That's why the right hire needs to be made.
Donor's at least regular fan ones that have no interaction with the decisions don't get excited by coaches walking in the door they get excited by the better prospect of better players.

Funny how we all the sudden whatever money it took for Fran to get McCord and Angeli and 5 star Calvin Russell was there.

Honestly I have more faith in BH or Scherz bringing in big names than GMac from the portal. No knock that GMac can't do it he just hasn't been at it as long.

Love that he waited to the moment red was fired to do a media blitz too. Guy was jd Salinger all year. Does he even go to games?

Incredible

I personally thought his remarks were misguided. I love that he defended Red, that was to be expected -- but throwing the players under the bus and calling them out by name was unnecessary.

But, JB has never been diplomatic. And getting older amplifies all of our most prominent quirks.

This is my biggest worry. If money goes down for gmac then we will be right back here in 3 years. The university needs to get the coaching budget and nil up to pier schools. Right now providence is utilizing more nil funds they we are. PROVIDENCE !

They came across cranky calculating and wrong. If he wants to be the free flowing shoot from the hip hot taker let’s see all year long

I also think if he’s with the school as a paid to do nothing he should be quieter. If he wants to be a hot taker go work w Craig Carton or Portnoy

Fran went and GOT his money. Nothing was promised to him. But he also had the connections to the big names. He had the pedigree as a recruiter. He knew how to get in the rooms.

We have no idea if Gerry can get us in the rooms with that type of talent.
