Just to clarify things, revenue sharing and NIL are different. The revenue sharing is coming directly from the university and can be financed through media revenues, ticket sales, donations,... That is where the $20.5 million number comes from that is thrown around. Remember, football gets most of the revenue share and the "model" split is approximately 75% football, 15% mens basketball, 5% women's basketball, and 5% other sports although schools can and do adjust the mix, but these are the typical rev share targets. So, for men's basketball, the target under this model is ~$3.1 million, but the ACC schools were estimated to pay men's basketball a higher number, ~$4.4 million. The Big East is paying ~$5.7 million on revenue sharing to men's basketball, the most of any conference, but there is variation among the schools (think Seton Hall).

NIL is SUPPOSED to come from businesses that pay athletes to represent their products and services. This is where alumni, boosters, local and national businesses come in to find opportunities to provide revenues to athletes.

So, how are schools paying the basketball roster $10 million+ per year? Most of the money comes from NIL commitments that businesses make to the school for the athletes as most P4/P5 programs are using the model $3.1 million for revenue sharing for men's basketball.

How does this impact a head coaching search? A coach knows the revenue sharing is there at all schools, so that is not a real competitive advantage for a school looking to hire a coach. So, he will want to understand the ability of the school to generate NIL opportunities for the athletes as that is the differentiator. So for Syracuse to be attractive to a top head coach candidate, Syracuse needs to be able to show that they can generate NIL opportunities that are comparable or higher than the other schools in the ACC. Remember, one of the reasons Kevin Willard left Maryland of the Big 10 to go to Villanova was due to better NIL support at Villanova and Villanova's positioning within their conference vs Maryland's positioning within their conference.

This, he would honestly be my second choice behind Hodgson, and could be convinced to even be first, if he is a realistic target
I just looked this guy up and yeah agreed he would be a nice get. Question would be why would he leave where he is at?

I'd be a bit concerned. I liked Hodgson personally and thought he would be a good fit but I also didn't think it would be a slam dunk. I believe there were reservations at SU on him. That said I am not a fan of keeping it in the SU family, this now screams G-mac.
This is an unmitigated disaster.

Welp a few days ago my boss said BH and PC is no chance Today his phone is lighting up with his buddies from college asking if getting BH is definitely going to happen. He hadn’t heard anything yet from his usual source but it’s heating up massively now.

Of course, the casuals are picking up on it, and asking around it is all over twitter. And some media people like Goodman are saying BH to Providence makes the most sense etc.

That would be like some media guys coming out and saying Billy Donovan is in play for Syracuse. Our casual fans would go nuts all of social media and twitter would be talking about it non-stop.

So if Bh ends up at Syracuse, that guy is just wrong. But if he ends up at P.C.. the people that thought he would end up at Syracuse are going to look stupid. See anything contradictory in that thinking? Until it actually happens, no one knows for sure who is going to end up where. I haven't seen anyone saying the BH is 100% ending up at Syracuse. I will say I think he at this time our first choice and I would bet Syracuse is his first choice. But I don't think any of us saw Blair as the new A.D.. Would you rather those of us that get information not to share it because if we are wrong, we will look "stupid? Silly
No, thats absolutely not what I'm saying. I'm encouraging everyone to post what they are hearing! Definitely was not criticizing you at all, you and the other insiders are awesome. My criticism is aimed at the people immediately discredited the poster who is claiming the providence/calhoun/schertz/gerry and Holloway frontrunner info. People immediately crapped on it

One thing I would say is with BLair being the hire there are a lot more potential options and from reading his quotes about the opening it appears there's a lot of external interest. I'd let things play out a bit.
So perhaps an even bigger fish from the proven hire department? Hodgson is going to be the real deal, so they got to get the deal done on an already proven real deal coach.

That's my read on it as well but I leave open the possibility that Providence tries to go all in and shoot for the stars. Again I think the former is accurate but in today's world you can't rule anything out.
And of course, at this point, Hodgson is focused on his USF team and is likely negotiating through his agent. If PC is desperate, since basketball is their main sport, they could try to get closer to funding the full House settlement of $20 million and devote a bigger chunk of it to player pay. Which is allegedly what some Big East basketball only schools might do. PC is such a small school, I don’t think they can take the financial risk, but who knows. I also hope Hodgson isn’t going to be short sighted—and hope we aren’t too—and will realize his upside for winning is higher at Syracuse, which if he succeeds will produce more revenue and more NIL funds, etc. It can snowball into something huge here at Syracuse if he can win big. I don’t think the same is true of PC.

excellent post with one comment. if they chose too, a non football playing school such as providence could allocate close to the $20m rev share to bball. i doubt they'd want to but they do have a lot more flexibility than an su with rev share. could be a difference maker when looking at total funds available (nil + rev share).
