Coach Search Options after Autry

Did you not go to, or watch any games this year? Where were all "the fans who still support the team (who) would hate to see those empty seats go to waste every game."?

Those of us in the 300's.

If those seats go unsold next season, they should be occupied. Looks better on TV.

Amazes me the total lack of support for GMac on this board. I know it shouldn't.
You know that it's going to be really bad for him and his family if he's not ready and he gets the gig, right?

The pressure cooker he would face is, in a lot of ways, completely unfair to him. This moment in time really sucks for him to walk into.

You really want to see another SU sports icon go down like that? Because that's what the vast majority of posters are fearful of. It's not "Gerry hate" at all; quite the opposite. That's what you and a few others here seem to be misunderstanding.

I also wouldn’t be shocked if one of the major donors funding the USF package for BH is JL.
If the SU Basketball people wanted JL not involved, fund the team they actually also like to keep him. USF will be in a power conference soon enough. Hopefully Syracuse can keep the Lally’s in the fold on football.

The concern is that Hayne said sports will improve the profile of the school and there is the potential they did not step up to hire the best coach. A majority of the die hard fans will not be happy if Gerry is hired. Others will because they are casual fans remembering the good old days.
It’s sad what has become. I never use to miss an su game. Plan my day to watch. Over the last several years losing interest in BB. Find I have other things to do than watch a bad product that was poorly coached.
Now GMAC is probably a better coach than Red (low bar) but it’s another JB legacy hire that won’t move the needle or get fans back engaged unless there is a mass roster change and influx of talent which does not seem reasonable.
He will also bring all his assistants which are former su guys. I like su players but also at this point need some different view points.
The thing is regardless of who is hired the fan base isn't going to be happy without early season wins that build momentum anyway. Hodgson would have to prove himself the same way that Gerry will to get fans to buy back in.

If it comes down to GMac or Hop I want Hop. They both have fire and passion, but GMac only has a couple years under his belt. I thought Hop had a bad deal when he filled in for JB, forcing him to take over a system that wasn't his, although he knew the system intimately. They weren't all Hop's guys, JB at that time was putting the kabosh on some of the "better" recruits. Hop moved on to Washington where he was less than stellar, however was still picked up by an NBA team. It is my hope that he has learned a ton from being in the NBA system and is smart enough to have adapted his initial style. I do think Hogkins was overblown, and hasn't really proven himself very much either. Just being outside the family shouldn't automatically give him a heads up. If you can coach you can coach no matter the pedigree. I want someone who has a few years more experience overall than either Hodkins or Gerry. There are even a few D2 coaches that have been very successful that should get as close a look like Matt Margenthaler, Joe Lomardi, or Tom Brown to name a few. I would take these proven coaches at this point over GMac or Hodgkins.

I don't know why anyone would want Hodgkins.

If Hodgson is truly out, then at this point I’m going with Murray. He understands today’s college game and has been part of UConn’s terrific run alongside Hurley.
Jason Hart, Hop and GMac are my guys if I am going with my heart and with SU family loyalty, but Murray makes too much sense if it’s all about business and righting the ship.

so perfectly articulated

This makes sense to me.

Because it would make ZERO sense for the Hodgson camp to put out a press release through a mouthpiece like Goodman a day and a half before his team plays an important NCAAT game.

But from a PR perspective, it DOES make sense for his camp to get out in front of a story where Syracuse is choosing someone else over him. You preempt that by putting info out there that you turned them down first, you didn't get turned down. PR 101 spin.
Agree fully. There’s a ton of interdependencies as well. I’m not naive to think it’s not money but there’s a story behind it too.

Everyone just thought the Lallys because theyre buds with BH would just step up to give what he asked for hoops in NIL. Reality is that they can do that at USF too and live in that community half the year. You think they can show their face at USF games if BH goes up to CNY and it was so blatantly thrown in their faces at USF.

Make no mistake snowbirds are snowbirds. Nothing brings them back to CNY in Jan and Feb. point being they may be quite happy with the status quo where they support hoops and BH in Florida and Fran for football in the fall.

And Frans no dope either. He knows Every check that Lally writes for BH is a check not going to him to find an offensive line right now. We all assume they can just write blank checks but

We may screwed with a coach or we maybe we won’t but it’s not just simple that Goodman said “he turned us down”

You only say this once BH is out after trashing him non stop. Convenient.
I wouldn’t call it trashing but I did take a lot of shrapnel going against the well-organized and vocal Friends of Bryan contingency of the board. Which do you think persuaded the AD the most: calling BH a goofball, the nickname Baby Shark Hodgson, the nickname The Guppy, or using the ‘angry’ emote on the pro-Hodgson posts????

But seriously folks, we should all be investing in new sunglasses because SU Hoops future is bright!!!!!

The anger is at Boeheim and the reality is if it is Gerry or Hop, the fan base will turn on them. Boeheim screwed this up by not leaving in 2018. This is why we are where we are.

If you're going to subject us to this trolling and act like you have inside info, redeem yourself by sharing the info. Then die on that hill if it's wrong.

Metaphorically, of course 🦈

His money to do what he wants but I’m feel like we’re getting conflicting reports here… from what he seems to have posted both directly and through his team, he’s all in for football but has split allegiances for basketball, no? So like are we sure he is even a Syracuse basketball fan?

Here’s my fear with in house for the normies to get

1- Hop or GMac get the job
2- decent staff is announced
3- a couple guys we want announced will stay
4- decent NIL package leaked out
5- Decent portal class with some exciting additions
6- off season coverage shows promise and intensity and either of those options are well spoken and the non crazies like us are stoked
7- We smoke both exhibitions an everything looks positive
8- We get to Vegas and can’t score and staff is angry and not sure what to do as we get bulldozed again.
9- The juice and excitement is completely gone and there are no good basketball answers that the staff is able to provide
10- JB is much louder on the media telling Cuse nation to let his guy get going and trust the process and spews some spin about the Vegas losses
11- The tailspin begins before we’ve even gotten to conference season and the dome empties out like it did with Red
12- All along the media and other fanbases are laughing at us like we are Rutgers.

Maybe it doesn’t go this way but the normies need to understand this has a much higher likelihood than with BH and definitely higher with Hop. GMac looks like a good hire compared to Hop and if that’s part of the whole mirage to try and sell this, grading on a curve…

Lastly - if it’s GMac then I’ll just say a little prayer that Siena gives Duke the biggest scare of the season or does the impossible and maybe some faith is restored.
But what if the #1 item on your list ends up being that Phil Martelli, Jr (or some other non-SU person) gets the job? And then #2 thru #9 all play out the same way? Would the dome faithful give the benefit of the doubt to PMJ if Year 1 went off the rails - but not extend that same courtesy to Gerry or to Hop?

We’re not guaranteed success next year, no matter who we hire. We’re likely to have an entirely new roster, and it might take the new staff a year or two to build the foundation that they want. Even if we had landed Hodgson, it wouldn’t be crazy to think that he might have led us to a 21-12 record, 10-10 in the ACC (tied for 7th place), with us squarely on the bubble again next March. If Hodgson or any other ‘outsider’ does that, would whispers start after Year 1 that he might not be the right coach? If Gerry/Hop lead us to a similar record next year, will they be treated differently just because they’re SU alums?
