Coach Search Options after Autry

Sounds like he is saying Athletic Department financials are bad but GMac could quickly get strong NIL support from Melo and other donors.

Melo and the other donors going to buy thousands of seats each game too, when the team is just mediocre at best.

I think (no confirmation) that SU might be concerned over the girlfriend’s age, that she was apparently a student when they started dating and that they (again apparently) have a kid and aren’t married.

Colleges these days are all about appearances and avoiding scandals.

I believe he was what we were looking for and we are what he was looking for. The only reason it didn’t happen was that he failed the vetting process. It is the only thing I can think they would explain this sequence of events.
I work in higher ed and there is nothing even remotely scandalous about this. Just feels like yet another unnecessary swing at the guy.

Ironically, I do not think there would be as much interest in GMAC if Siena had not won their tournament and punched their ticket to the NCAAT.
It might have only been one game, but it was an important game.
Something they could sell to fans and the alumni.
If he fails, we are worse off than before. No doubt but I think they decided to prioritize NIL for football and to hell with basketball.
If he does well, we may have a long term coach.

And for those who fear the return of the zone, watch some Siena games on ESPN plus. Their defense was man to man suffocating, rarely any zone.
I fully expect them to lose big to Duke, no way they can seriously compete with the #1 team.

I don't think he's a particularly special player, but he was definitely a poor fit for the system that Autry was running (insert "what system?" joke here).

I think George could be a fine enough starting PG in other situations but without much motion in our system, we were asking our ball handlers to be able to break their man down off the dribble and that's not really his game IMO.

Doesn't mean he's a good target for Kentucky necessarily but I think he makes more sense for other schools than he does for us.
Well I got news for you about Gmacs offense….

Heard from someone close to the interviewing and everyone has this wrong.

Was told he yelled “show me the money, or kick rocks!”
Was asked “what do you mean?”
BH responded with how this interview wa shakey potatoes!
Interviewer said I think we heard enough and BH got up walked out and screamed “FREE JOHNSYRACUSE !”
He didn’t say “kick rocks”. Thats for those over 70

Dome will be empty again by the time we get back from Las Vegas trip. So many smart people make so many stupid decisions. You are going to get the same results as throwing money at Red. You guys are just lighting it on fire. Waste of time and resources. Such a short-sighted way of thinking. Hiring an underqualified coach because some casuals might fill the dome if we are winning, but the minute we start losing, which will be the likely outcome, then the program is dead dead. So dumb. I can't believe real people think like this.

I can understand the reasoning with the community and raising funds with familiarity, but they are also being somewhat short sighted with thinking that way. We have a ton on alumni with money in NYC and in California, for ex, who love our teams, and also could be called upon for large sums of money. Actually look at where some of our biggest NIL donors live...Florida. Now of course local folks will fill the stands, and while some of you may not want to invest on buying season tickets, I have to think that you will still attend some games. And there will be new locals who will buy seasons because they know Blackwell for years, and love Gerry. But they need to see a larger picture.
I agree with everything you said. Based on his commentary that the "athletic department" thinks this about attendance my initial inclination is that these folks know gmac and blackwell a heck of lot better than anyone else and they are also local so it makes sense that they would have some inherent bias to the in family hires. What do I know though.

Might as well put card board dummies in every seat. With what we’re hearing, why should season ticket holders “invest” in the program when the University is unwilling? It’s ironic the chancellor, on a whim, can hire another athletic administrator for seven figures and then have the cajones to cry poverty.

I don’t think things are the same for assistant coaches.

Think of the impact Juli Boeheim had on the community, and in some ways still does.

I am sure BH’s girl is great but is she ready to be a community leader? As an aside, Adrian and his wife seemed to not even try and be community leaders. I suspect SU would like to bring in someone who has a wife and who is willing to be visible in the community.

At least somewhat like JAB and Juli were.
The wife doesn’t put 30k in the bleachers. Who gives a “blank” who the wife’s is.

This is ridiculous thinking Tom, either by you or SU or both. I've lived in Kansas since 1998 and couldn't tell you what either Roy Williams or Bill Self's wife even looks like. I guess it's a nice to have for some people who care about that kind of stuff, but some spouses don't like to be in the limelight and that shouldn't be a key factor in a hiring decision. Just absurd.
This is a Syracuse board. What happened in Kansas is not relevant.

You really have to have been here to understand the visibility Juli had for a couple decades.

No matter, BH is not coming back. Let’s focus on candidates who are still possibilities.

Why would GMAC consider taking this job? It will be a career ending job.
My concern if he's willing to risk it for the challenge of turning around a monstrosity of a program. Even though he played here. It sounds like the biggest undertaking in power conference basketball.

You’ve confirmed that Syracuse is committed to living in the past.
