Coach Search Options after Autry

i don't think he was saying what some think. he didn't say the hire had to be gmac or hop and in the family. he's basically saying they shouldn't be excluded because they are in the family. he made it clear the hire needs to be the best coach they can get.
I’m convinced that many people don’t actually listen to what JB says, but instead react to a clickbait headline or an out-of-context quote. Just like the Dan Patrick Show appearance flare-up earlier this week, what he said here really shouldn’t be controversial at all.

I think it would be in Syracuse’s best interest to call Shaheen Holloway and let him say no if resources are as bad some have said. He’s a winner with very poor monetary support at Seton Hall. Rather him get a chance than Gerry come in, fail, and be remembered for something he shouldn’t be.
His peeps have reached out to SU, not sure what's been relayed back to them though.

Hiring Luke Murray would give Syracuse a modern, well-connected coach who blends strong basketball pedigree with contemporary offensive thinking. As an assistant at UConn Huskies men's basketball, Murray has been part of one of the most successful and efficient programs in recent years, helping develop a dynamic offense that emphasizes spacing, shooting, and player versatility—areas where Syracuse has lagged. He also brings elite recruiting ties across the Northeast and nationally, which is critical for re-establishing Syracuse as a consistent talent destination. Beyond tactics and recruiting, His mix of youth, innovation, and exposure to championship culture makes him a compelling candidate to modernize Syracuse while still respecting its tradition.

Again the resources are not horrific. SU has money, more then most I would say or certainly above average. The issue is getting into the upper echelon, north of 10-12+ mill NIL for bball alone.

Hard pass

Hiring Phil Martelli Jr. would give Syracuse basketball a head coach with a strong blend of player development, program-building experience, and deep roots in the Northeast basketball scene. His teams emphasize toughness, discipline, and efficient offense—traits Syracuse has needed to regain consistency. Just as important, he understands the demands of running a program, not just assisting in one, which separates him from many candidates. Growing up around the game under his father, Phil Martelli, he brings a strong basketball IQ and leadership foundation, but has also built his own identity as a coach. His familiarity with recruiting in the Northeast and his reputation as a relationship-builder would help Syracuse reconnect with key pipelines and re-establish a strong, sustainable culture.

Strong pass offense over defense if you are trying to do more with less at the P4 level

You know what other school has been to three bowls in the last five seasons? Rutgers. BC has been to two.

AI??

Hiring John Groce would give Syracuse Orange men's basketball a seasoned, steady leader with a proven track record of building competitive programs and maximizing talent. As the head coach at Akron Zips men's basketball, Groce has consistently produced winning teams, strong defensive units, and postseason appearances, showing an ability to create sustainable success even without elite recruiting resources. His recent offensive success has turned him into a more well-rounded coach. He also has high-major experience from his time at Illinois Fighting Illini men's basketball, including an NCAA Tournament run, which demonstrates he can handle the expectations and spotlight that come with a program like Syracuse. Groce is known for his organization, discipline, and player development, as well as his ability to identify and develop under-the-radar talent—an increasingly valuable skill in the transfer portal era. His experience, consistency, and no-nonsense approach would provide Syracuse with stability and a clear identity as it looks to return to national relevance.

I know what you’re saying but someone who lives in the public spotlight shouldn’t call the fans stupid. He should know better.

No offense... but who cares how GMAC is remembered. Just because Autry failed doesn't change the fact that he is one of our all time great players. If GMAC bombs he will be remembered as the all time great who gave us a LOT of memories. Of all the reasons to not hire GMAC, concerns about tarnishing his legacy as a player is the lest of them.

I see what you’re doing here…

His first post-season interview (don’t remember with who, don’t care to look it up at this point) was not great. He very clearly advocated for GMAC in that interview. I think that colors how people have viewed every appearance since then, but it was only the first one I took any issue with.

I’m convinced he has friends at Syracuse who help him massage his messaging after he slips up, because he’s usually fine after one disaster if he’s got a string of appearances.

Hiring Travis Steele would give Syracuse basketball a head coach with proven experience leading a high-profile program and navigating the pressures that come with it. During his time at Xavier Musketeers men's basketball, Steele recruited at a high level and maintained strong defensive identity, and he has since rebuilt his reputation at Miami RedHawks men's basketball by emphasizing toughness, culture, and player development. He brings valuable head coaching experience, something Syracuse may prioritize in a transitional period, along with deep recruiting ties in the Midwest and access to national pipelines. At Miami Oh Steele seems to have shifted gears to a more uptempo offense focused on shooting. Steele is also known as a strong relationship-builder and program organizer, which would be critical in today’s NIL and transfer portal era. His combination of experience, recruiting ability, and hunger to re-establish himself at the highest level makes him a viable candidate to bring stability and competitiveness back to Syracuse.

Its more about him above criticism because he's Gmac. Can't boo family, give him the benefit of the doubt, he's his own person, etc. And when he does get fired, it'll be about how the fans are unfair to him. Same thing that has happened with the last two SU basketball coaches.
