Coach Search Options after Autry

Here’s what I’m thinking:

If the choice is GMac, Thamel will be reporting it tomorrow. No need to let it linger into the weekend.

If we hear nothing tomorrow, it’s not GMac and it’s somebody who is still coaching in the tournament, likely Martelli.

Does this sound reasonable?
I actually think this weekend is a full dead period. There's games nonstop. I doubt Thamel would even pick up the phone cuz everyone is busy reporting on actual march madness storylines. You know like Duke getting a scare from gmac or UNC choking.

Now Monday or Tuesday with a handful of days break before the Sweet 16 well then that's another story.

I’ve never met the guy. Never met any of the big donors. As an outsider, I find it funny that one hand we hear about how awful SU finances are (depending on the poster) and SU has to beg for money and new boosters or they can’t compete AND on the other, there’s a handful of posters who go the extra step in slagging him any chance they get.

Ok. I shared one experience if that makes me someone slagging him at any chance then fine I guess… I apologize to anyone I may have offended or disappointed sharing that.

Anybody forming opinions from NY Post articles is not the type of person with opinions we need to worry about.
The rest of the paper is garbage but its sports section is legitimate and among the most respected in the industry.

GMac - Can be announced now
PMJ - Plays Saturday
Groce - Plays tomorrow
Steele - Plays tomorrow
Murray - Can be announced now
Wild Card - Don't know if they are still in or not

Sell me on Martelli. I see 3 successful years as HC, getting promoted on a team in ok/good shape and getting hired to a team in great shape.
Hes coached at 7 different schools under 5 different coaches, comes from a legendary pedigree with his father being very well regarded in the Philly “mafia” and has now successfully coached at two different schools and has won a game in the tourney.

Martelli or Murray
These are my picks. I predicted Murray this morning. Martelli was not on my radar as much but bet your butts he is the best available HC on our list right now if the list exists and Gmac we all think we know he gets the gig if the NIL checks are big enough

Took over (with no offseason) a 4th place Bryant team after a scandal with Jared Grasso, brought them to the American East Title/NCAA tournament in year two. Took over at VCU this year (granted they did just as well last year) and won the A-10. Bryant finished 9-22 without him this year.

Young guy, family background in coaching, teams play good basketball.

Do we know that? We only have got one side. we don't know what the University said to anyone.
He said it was reported, it was reported that. He even linked to it. Yes we only got one side which is why he made sure to qualify it with “reported”

Add a little bit he runs a fast paced team. They are top 50 offense. Top 40 in 3 point shooting.

Looks like they have 3 really good players that can play P4 level that in theory would come with him to start his program off with kids that are familiar. Those players are Hill (scored 34 today), Lewis (Freshman hit the two clutch free throws), and their skilled center, Djokovic.

Beat me to it. Grasso! If the rumors are true from Goodman he will be our next coach ha

Matt Ehalt is a UConn fan that attended Syracuse, and stood in the student section with a UConn jersey on. He's a clown.
My kid went to UCONN, sat in the student section cheering his butt off for SU. He was so loud Flynn came up to him after the game, thanked him and gave him his head band. My kid did his work study job for UCONN athletics.

You really should believe that. There might be extra pressure on him to take the job but I can tell you for a fact, that he was not interested in it last week. But I will concede that may be because he didn't think he would be offered. But he has reasons not to want it. And today only made that decision more complex

I believe that people were told by their sources that BH had the job, that cap was going to be the AD, that hop had a 30M package sitting in the wings for him to get hired and that JB was a legitimate candidate to comeback and coach... None of that turned out to be true, doesn’t mean everyone was lying but it means the messages being sent weren’t entirely accurate. Call it fluid situations if you want but on this: I simply refuse to believe that a guy who spent his entire adult life in Syracuse, who lived off that local fame for 20 years, would turn down the biggest job he could ever hope to get. I’m sorry, I’m sure some sources said he would but like many times these last couple weeks, the sources are wrong.

Did Bryant lose any recruits or players when he took over? The ‘no offseason’ implies an uphill battle but he was promoted from associate HC.

Bringing players with him is a definite plus.

I have no doubt that on top of all the factions behind the scenes and Gmacs performance with Siena he ends up with the job.

I don’t love the hire, but it is what it is.

I do agree with the poster above though, taking a snapshot of one game in the tournament or two games in the tournament is a recipe for disaster. Sometimes it can be so volatile. At the end of the day these are kids, some of which are playing the biggest games of their lives. Some show up and perform, and others don’t.

With that said, there were people ragging on Martelli about 30 mins ago and he ends up winning the game.

That’s such today’s society. Someone isn’t worthy because of one game or one snapshot of a season.

Most of us GMac supporters were looking at his body of work over 2 seasons & work ethic over 16 or whatever seasons. Just look 400 pages back in this thread. We're the little flakes of pepper on the potato salad.

That said, I want to see how all of our supposed candidates do in the tournament.

As expected we have folks who have quickly moved from BH to full speed ahead around Martelli. He’s an impressive coach so far for sure.

His experience doesn’t necessarily stand out if we are going to be objective beyond coming from coaching stock and spending time in the G league. He spent less time around or with P4 programs than nearly every option that has been discussed.

Venturing to being a P4 coach would be new territory in any capacity for him. What kind of donor excitement does he generate and what kind of $$ for NIL has he worked with and made the most of?

He won today’s tournament auditions challenge so far. Good basketball mind and coaching stock. Curious about what he brings with him outside of that to boost and run a P4 program. To me seems he begs the same questions we are asking about others GMac included with the primary difference of being completely outside the SU sphere.

I’m not sure we’re going to get Gerry. I think the key would be getting him the resources he wants. He’s not going to come here if the NIL isn’t there. And the only way the $ is there is if Melo can be convinced to support Gerry like he is planning to support Hop.

If that happens, and it’s huge if, I think ultimately JB helps smooth over the hard feelings and convinces GMAC to take the job.
I just really have to laugh at this entire SU coaching candidate madness. Not only won’t Hodgson take the job anymore because of lack of megabucks NIL (even though the Lallys were supposedly funding the entirety and planning to bring him in since last year?) but now Gmac won’t either. Like what? But he’s been interviewing with BC and Georgia Tech. But also Blair is gonna help us get unprecedented NIL. Literally none of it makes any sense, and there’s no point in even trying to understand what’s actually going on right now. These coaches also have take some responsibility for NIL fundraising. Yes the university needs to lead the charge but your personality and the way you sell it will be key, too.

Maybe you didn't get what I was saying. My source was as good as it would be possible to have.
