I know I’m a dink but hiring Gerry right now at this point in time, 100% makes the most sense. in good faith, not sure anyone can say there is a better hire for the job right now than Gerry. You can’t ignore the history and what he means to the program and University. We need GMAC

Add a little bit he runs a fast paced team. They are top 50 offense. Top 40 in 3 point shooting.

Looks like they have 3 really good players that can play P4 level that in theory would come with him to start his program off with kids that are familiar. Those players are Hill (scored 34 today), Lewis (Freshman hit the two clutch free throws), and their skilled center, Djokovic.

True but if there is no path to the NIL commitment that’s needed to go outside of GMac then that’s where it ultimately lands. If there is a huge drop off in NIL because it’s a non GMac hire it will become nearly an impossible scenario for said coach to be able to have the roster to win.

Took over (with no offseason) a 4th place Bryant team after a scandal with Jared Grasso, brought them to the American East Title/NCAA tournament in year two. Took over at VCU this year (granted they did just as well last year) and won the A-10. Bryant finished 9-22 without him this year.

Young guy, family background in coaching, teams play good basketball.

JB is longtime friends with Phil Martelli Sr. so I suspect he’d support hiring his son. But he’s obviously gonna be advocating for Gmac all the way.

As a member of the student media covering Jim Boeheim, after seeing this exchange, I believe in my bones that if we hire Martelli Jr, Jim Boeheim will burn the Dome and the Melo Center to the ground so that the student media at Syracuse are never treated this way.

The good news is, it won't matter who's name is where on the Melo Center rubble.

So one of my concerns about Gerry is that I think he's going to be a really good coach over the long haul, but I'm not sure if he's ready yet. If we hire him too soon and he takes his lumps here, he'll be gone and the long haul will happen somewhere else.

The worst case scenario is we hire Gerry now, he's not ready, he crashes and burns and we fire him, then he goes elsewhere and has great success.

Most of us GMac supporters were looking at his body of work over 2 seasons & work ethic over 16 or whatever seasons. Just look 400 pages back in this thread. We're the little flakes of pepper on the potato salad.

That said, I want to see how all of our supposed candidates do in the tournament.

I wouldn't hire him yet, but I wouldn't hold his assistant coaching track record against him. That was Boeheim's show, for the majority of his time here, and we all have pretty negative views of Red as HC, so what was Gerry supposed to do?

It's a lot easier to assign credit/blame when a head coach is established and an assistant comes in to help with a specific area, or one is fired for a specific area and then you see the turnaround. Neither seems to be the case with Gerry.

Exactly. This is why Hodgson was the no brainer clear definitive best candidate (unless they could get Schertz). I like Gmac. We all like Gmac. But he has some strikes against him when it comes to experience and offensive innovation. Maybe he’ll worn out in the end. But I’m concerned. These coaches contracts are inane. Pitt has been saddled with Capel for 8 years!
