Coach Search Options after Autry

Not sure if I want Martelli.

Grasso as much of a nut that he is, turned around Bryant and Martelli capitalized.

VCU has a good little program. Kind of runs itself since Shaka was there. One of the top A10 jobs. Coaches jump there just before they get the big job. Shaka, Will wade, Mike rhoades, Ryan Odom. All jumped to a P4 school after their time at VCU.
The cradle of coaches

I’m not fully against Gmac. But how do you defend his entire assistant coaching track record at SU. It’s fully correlated with our downturn.
How much say do u think Jim gave his guys. I’m thinking not much.

There was an interview that I read earlier this year about Siena and GMAC.
It said GMAC was an incredible hard ass in practice and in games. People either worked their asses off and did what he said or he was in their faces and let them know it. Nobody ever got a pass.
But, off the court, he was close to all the players and let them know he was there for them no matter what.
And all the players love him for what he made them achieve.

Somehow he walked the tight rope from being a tough no nonsense coach who accepted no excuses on the court and a close mentor off the court who would always be there for them.

They said on CNN that this was the first time since the last century that a starting five played the entire 40 minutes in a game. Now, this only happened because with all the injuries and NCAA suspension, there was no one else.
But those guys played 100% full out the entire game, even Doty after he injured his ankle.
These players showed they would do whatever it takes to win, no surrender, no excuses, just buckle down and do the work.
That is the attitude I want our Syracuse players to have.
Not the creampuffs they have been the last 2 years.

If we ran five Fulton kids out there, we're still dancing. Fulton had a major league pitcher (Pete Gray, look it up), and bowling Hall of Famer Mark Roth lives in Fulton. And don't get me started on wrestling. Storied history of sporting excellence.
One armed Pete Gray? He was from Fulton?

I have no idea if GMAC would be successful here. None of us do. But I think about a couple of data points.

First, GMAC impressed me when, after not being considered to replace JB, he didn't just hang around and hope his turn would come. He bet on himself by going out and getting a head coaching job at a low(er) level. That shows character and confidence.

Second, maybe this is just confirmation bias, but we actually won 20 games with Red as head coach in the one year that GMAC was on the bench with him, and had miserable, underachieving years the two years after GMAC left.

Third, GMAC seems to get along with his players without being their friend, and seems to insist on standards. The head coach has to be willing to be a bit of a bad cop (maybe more than a bit).

Assuming the NIL whales will mostly get behind this hire, I say run with it.
Red too nice and Gmac isn’t which I wanna meet a great coach who is nice to his players. There isn’t one is my point.

I've been offline most of the day except for a few glances at the board and there is NO way that I am going back through all of this.

Assuming GMac is the choice after the way Siena acquitted themselves today, will he be able to unify the donors and start to clean up the gigantic mess that has spawned this thread?

My guess is no. Bringing in a guy who the various warring parties already know probably means the war and dysfunction continues.

This is based on nothing. Sorry but Hodgson coached at 4 different schools and was successful at each.

Gerry has coached at two, and his first stint as an assistant, for us, was the worst time in the last 60 years for the program.

He might turn out great, but Hodgson is so much more proven.
And Hodgson turning us down tells the market (i.e. other candidates) that we don't have the money to compete.

Boeheim did us no favors with that crap on TV, about us being "bottom 3" in the ACC in NIL.

We have MANY long time knowledgeable people who were directly involved in our efforts who shared LOTS of information about it all.

If we pick Gerry, it's still a huge risk. I'd rather take the Offensive Guru assistant from UConn than Gerry, to be honest. Better technical coaching talent.
What 4 schools was he as HC at and why is he seen as a builder? AT Arkansas State, his turnaround was not particularly awesome and his 2nd year was Sienaesque but with no conference title or ncaa invite. Seems like a lot of hype. If wiki is correct, South Florida was 38- 27 the 2 years prior to him getting there including 25-8 in '24. Good coach? Seems like. Great coach? Remains to be seen.

I admire their toughness, but it seemed to me that fatigue caught-up with Siena in the 2nd half, when they only managed 22 points and shot 23.5% from the field (going scoreless for nearly 7 minutes).

And Candy Cummings invented the curve ball while playing baseball in Fulton.

One thing Gerry has - he is unique. There was never and will never be a player in the state of PA maybe any state who did what he did in the state playoffs in HS an in the manner he did then followed to accomplish what he did in college. Especially not someone all of 6-0 tall.

He has a tenacity paired with understanding of the game that’s hard to explain. The same hard ass side paired with building a strong bond that’s described of him as coach is who he was as a player. He was as intense as they get and had a killer mentality when we played them in HS then at things like district awards etc he was chill and not above anyone even if there was some typical trash talking and good natured banter.

Gerry’s flaw is found within his strength as a competitor. The push and desire to win can create blind spots where he can miss things and overplay his hand. It’s not uncommon in highly competitive younger coaches - it’s actually something Hurley struggled with early on at UConn before it all clicked.

Thus, Gerry needs a staff and a strong voice or two that can help him in his approach and game management to truly excel. He needs a Luke Murray metaphorical equivalent on the staff. I don’t mind if he brings one of Blackwell or AO but preferably not both. I’d like to see Devo involved somehow. Add a high level recruiter and another basketball mind from outside the family.

Finally just show us the money. Time to get everyone on board and that includes AW. Figure out a way he can be the guy who can setup individual NIL deals for bigger fish while others do so via a more collective contribution so that you have multiple paths that meet all the regulatory guidelines. The NIL system will ultimately collapse on itself be it via law or the NCAA or lack of sustainability but we need a collaborative model that’s multi faceted getting money in via big donors, fan contributions at games or events or a better managed subscription service with a core board or management structure that handles clearinghouse matters and acts somewhat loosely like a silent brokerage akin to whatever Duke does.

Lastly, Duke is hungry for a Scheyer / program nemesis that sells big and the ACC is too, and in short order. With the right mix Gerry could be that guy ( I thought BH could too). There is opportunity here while we sit in the darkness to find our way out even with GMac. It won’t be for certain but it just might be the time where the iron is hottest which goes against what I had been hellbent in my thinking even a couple weeks ago…

Honestly I’d love to have girard as a coach also in the bench….never should of let him go

He got his degree and was right to go.

He went to clemson and played his natural position, got in the best shape of his life, and had his best playing year.

We were incaapable of helping him do any of that here.

On the topic of assistants.
If we hire GMac I really hope we can get Devendorf on staff. I have no proof for this but I think he’d be a killer recruiter. Just seems like he would resonate with the kids. He also has that same passion for the game as GMac.

Just noted that in my post above too.
