That’s certainly a way to look at it. I’m not anti Devo per se. my understanding is that he’s don’t some good stuff with SU and in Syracuse. The reverence is over the top though.
It was a bizarre path (very bizarre) to arrive to this moment that seems imminent, but you are lying to yourself if you didn't think the moment GMAC became an assistant coach at Syracuse that he will be the head coach at Syracuse someday. This is about as messy as it could've possibly have gone to reach this moment, but here we are lol. If it turns out to be a massive mistake, atleast the optics isn't a PR issue anymore because the National Media is all rooting for it to happen ever since he won the MAAC. But yeah GMAC getting the job in this fashion is truly unprecedented. Syracuse isn't a normal Power Conference program though, sometimes for better and sometimes for worse, hopefully this is one of those times for the better. Even if we are due for a surprise here, GMAC as HC at Syracuse will happen at some point in his career.I've come around a bit on Gerry. He's a good coach and is clearly a huge improvement. Objectively he's a good candidate. My reservations are mostly subjective. From 4 wins to leaving everything in the floor against Duke, you can't say he isn't good at his job.
I love how he says "- Duke" to UNC guys after the game and starts his presser giving all glory to God. Kid has some swagger. As a fellow Fultonian that left for many years and came back, yes...times have been rough on this area. It is sad, but it is what you make of it. We live here strictly because our parents are still alive and well and help a lot with raising our children. Fulton pumps out some extremely hard-working blue-collar types. Some sneaky good athletes have come out of this tiny run-down city over the years. I can tell you all as someone who knows Gavin's mother very well, you will not find a harder worker as evident from watching any Siena game. I harass his mother often about how hard she is on her kids as she coaches almost everything from soccer, lacrosse, and basketball but those kids all work their butts off because of it. I know that fans are going to love this kid in Orange
He sits right next to Gerry every game. Thanks for the info about his decision to have Folefac on the guard, didn't see that before. Sounds like a guy who GMac would want to come with him.He will probably bring Ben Lee. He was the assistant he took from Hop's former staff in Washington.
He was the head of recruiting and also the assistant in charge of scouting at Siena. Per Gerry, his strategy to put Folefac on Kennedy was key to beating Merrimack.
On Selection Sunday, he literally spent all night in his Siena office going over as many Duke games he could find so he could brief the players and coaches of any tendencies/weaknesses he found that the team could use to put together a strategy to win.
IMHO….one of the most over hyped correlations people try to make, is how effective assistants are under JB. JB didn’t allow them to game manage one iota. And at the end, he didn’t want to recruit kids that had to be managed.I’m not fully against Gmac. But how do you defend his entire assistant coaching track record at SU. It’s fully correlated with our downturn.
Seems like a great guy from this and other interviews. That's not a reason to hire him, but a nice bonus. He's going to make a P4 program very happy - not sure it will be ours, but he gets it.
I think Ben Lee would make a great HC at Siena. He will probably bring Ben Lee. He was the assistant he took from Hop's former staff in Washington.

Bim Joeheim sounds like exactly who you are talking aboutYeah no offense to our alums but Gerry needs an older former coach of some kind on the bench and a BIG TIME recruiter who will recruit the type of kids Gerry wants.

That's great for the first half of his first season, but will wear off if he doesn't win. Winning brings excitement. I'm not saying he'd be a terrible choice, but you can't hire him for that reason alone.I agree we are starved for a winner. But the hope and excitement before our first season will be thru the roof with GMAC, it wont be the same unless Martelli makes the final four and becomes the cinderella of the NCAAT. That is the only way a Marteilli can hope to generate excitement among the casual Syracuse fan.
And if that happens, he probably goes somewhere else anyway for a bigger bag.
Frankly, our preseason needs some warm fuzzies if we want to increase season ticket sales this year. Or at the very least stop half the season ticket holders cancelling their seats.
I am a season ticket holder and believe me many are on the verge of not renewing.
Providence is a nice job actually. I bet Ed Cooley wishes he was back there.BH to providence incoming?![]()
I let my boss make mistakes all the time. It’s his choice.IMHO….one of the most over hyped correlations people try to make, is how effective assistants are under JB. JB didn’t allow them to game manage one iota. And at the end, he didn’t want to recruit kids that had to be managed.
We didn’t know what Hop could do and we didn’t know what Red could do and now at least we’ve seen what Gerry could do.
It’s 10AM I am shocked it hasn’t been announced yet
