Coach Search Options after Autry

The rank and file know more than you give them credit for. They all love Gmac. But they also just saw a Syracuse guy, one of JB’s longtime assistant coaches, fail at the job in spectacular fashion. I think many of them are very skeptical about another inside the family hire.
I get it, but most casual fans, not Syracusefan types, won’t know Sherzt from a Shitsu. That was my inarticulate point

Seems clear from the communication, Blair, credible journalist in Thamel, etc that Cuse is trying to go big here. With GMac as a solid backup should that not materialize.

Could be leverage play with GMac too.

GMAC's agent --> His rate went up after the Duke game.

Cuse --> We have a bigger name in reserve (Leak a few names to Thamel on background.)

Come back to Gerry on the next hire. He will have marinated a bit more in the head coach position with additional experience. The will to come back to Alma mater will always be there.
That means the next SU coach will have failed at some point, and it may be unlikely thaf GMac wants to return. Suspect he’ll find success at another P4 school.

CNY mentality is rampant here.
That’s because they keep proving it true. Went with an unproven assistant after JB, held onto them a year too long to save money, then hired a relative unknown in football (which has been up and down but certainly wasn’t a slam dunk) and now we are seemingly trying to score a “deal” again.

It’s not a huge leap to get from “CNY mentality” to “seems pretty true”

There's no freaking way you hire Gerry if you can hire Josh Schertz instead.

Gerry had a nice season and one impressive game that he lost. Schertz turns around programs wherever he goes and wins a ton.

If SU can't rally the donor class to support Josh Schertz then we deserve to suck for eternity.

What are we doing? What's going on?
Question, and not sure it’s an issue, are we another stepping stone for a Shertz type coach? It would seem that if successful GMac is another lifer. SU fans like lifers.

It would be funny if it's Schertz because that Trilly guy said he had it on good authority that Schertz had no interest at all for Syracuse. If it's Schertz than it sounds like Trilly is no different than Goodman.
Unless he's said something else since 8pm last night, that is not what Trilly is saying

People need to stop worrying about someone leaving if they do well enough here to leave for a bigger job that means the program is in a better place than it was and good coaches should want the job. It’s rare to have a JB that stays 40+ years. Hire the best coach possible. There’s also not that many jobs that would be a step up from Syracuse if we’re rolling.

How many jobs are really better if he is successful at SU?
IDK. I think the money gap between SEC/Big 10 and the others also playing will continue to grow without Congressional action. If he wins here, Kentucky could say here’s $15M a year. These are just questions for discussion. I don’t pretend to know the answers, or if they even matter.

Best coach for Syracuse at this point. That’s my criteria. It’s like Arteta coming back to Arsenal. Prodigal son returning following a legend. Not straight line analogy but Mikel and Gerry are similar to me. Passion personified
Arteta was a Pep protege and Pep has nothing to do with Arsenal. However, If we had Arsenal money in NIL terms than we are set. I also think of him more at Everton.

Ehhh I wasn’t speaking to just the coaching hire. Comes up in every big story in town. 81. Micron…etc

Take this for what it’s worth from Siena side of things and some pieces I have kind of put together.

1- Siena is doing a lot behind the scenes to keep Gerry. That doesn’t mean they would be able to keep him from Syracuse obviously. But they are trying to put a package together to make him happy and content. May make it more expensive and/or more of a roadblock for Syracuse to get it done. Gerry is seen as being a cheaper option for Syracuse, so now if they have to up their bid, does he look like as good of an option?

2- Yes they will probably lose Doty, but if they can hold onto everyone else from this years roster, they are anticipating a special year next year. Could be a fantastic year to ‘Cash in’, with the anticipated openings.

3- he turned down BC and GT last week.

4- he has ankle replacement surgery scheduled very soon. Has been in a lot of pain the last couple weeks. This is a big time recovery and would deffinetly hurt his ability to hit the ground running at a new job. Would deffinetly hurt his ability to do what needs to be done in year 1 form any program.

5- he is a prideful guy, and as many have mentioned on here before, he was hurt that he was passed over the first time for Red. In addition, Siena is bending over backwards to keep him and make him happy. Meanwhile, he looks like Syracuse’s 3,4,5th option. That in a way kind of hurts too, do I want to go back to a place that turned me down already and then I’m a backup plan? Ultimately it’s easier to say no when the offer isn’t actually in front of you. But it can be a thought, kind of a slap in the face while your current school be-loves you.

6- Jim talking in the media and spewing his name for Syracuse isn’t really appreciated by Gerry. It’s more of a distraction and a nuisance. Albany is 2 hours away and Jim has not been to one Siena game to support Gerry.

7- Jim hates Nate Oats and it’s no secret apparently. Part of the reason that Hodgson was blackballed by Jim.
