Coach Search Options after Autry

you can still be trying to raise more for NIL and be a better job. What's lost in the NIL chat is trying to have the funds to fund a roster in the upper echeleon of college ball. We have no issues being Georgia Tech or Wake Forest. The discussion centers on making sure we're in the top part of the ACC and nationally.

A lot of that is because of some structural problems in how we go about NIL (IMO) and because we didn't have a bball collective in place. And because results have been bad. Donors and businesses don't want to back losers.

Money may be tied to a candidate but the real fundraising occurs after the hire is announced for the portal funds (at least it does for SU). Hopefully we build a stable base that's not tied to one off season but that's the reality because the on court results have been bad. This community is dying for a winner. The passion and desire is here. I think people forget that sometimes - I travel a lot for work and very few basketball cities have what we have. We're the only game that matters. The community pride is real.

I think we hire one of the top candidates out there and the money will follow. It's just tough because Gerry is the most beloved player of the past 25 years. It also doesn't hurt that he's a blue collar kid from PA who looks like our average fan. Undersized, scrappy, overlooked. Not saying that makes him the best candidate but it is why a lot of money is behind him.
I agree with almost everything you say in your post and appreciate the insights. But I have to disagree that he’s the most beloved player of the past 25 years. I wouldn’t put him in my top 5. Maybe I’d put him in my top 10. The 6 threes in the national title game and his 2006 Big East tourney run were magical.

Joe Biden Shut Up GIF by Election 2020

A week ago, but the second paragraph was not necessary.

I'm really getting to dislike Goodman.

For those worried about this blowout.. just look at where the SLU kids came from even those from bigger programs. Then put ACC level talent along with the top 2-3 players on this squad… including maybe a few of our guys returning that would fit.
I can’t help but see how Gerry and his Siena level talent lost by 4 in the closing minutes to the number one team in the country and Schertz with his higher level St Louis talent (higher than Siena) just got destroyed by Michigan. Flipping destroyed!
Games with all the spotlights on matter. BH and USF weren’t ready to play Louisville earlier and St Louis just had their shorts pulled over their head.

Can we get Schertz, get some of that big NIL money over from in house people to back JS, let Gerry handle his health and cook longer at Siena to them maybe even stepping up a league or becoming a staple in the tourney like Colgate then if JS wants a monster job in 4-5 years and we have a growing trophy case.. then let Gerry take over and add another addition to that trophy room and spend his last 15 yrs of coaching at his Alma mater?

I love the plan! It’s time for a plan to work for Syracuse lol

If Schertz rumors are real then this is the best play for both Syracuse and Gerry.

Take this for what it’s worth from Siena side of things and some pieces I have kind of put together.

1- Siena is doing a lot behind the scenes to keep Gerry. That doesn’t mean they would be able to keep him from Syracuse obviously. But they are trying to put a package together to make him happy and content. May make it more expensive and/or more of a roadblock for Syracuse to get it done. Gerry is seen as being a cheaper option for Syracuse, so now if they have to up their bid, does he look like as good of an option?

2- Yes they will probably lose Doty, but if they can hold onto everyone else from this years roster, they are anticipating a special year next year. Could be a fantastic year to ‘Cash in’, with the anticipated openings.

3- he turned down BC and GT last week.

4- he has ankle replacement surgery scheduled very soon. Has been in a lot of pain the last couple weeks. This is a big time recovery and would deffinetly hurt his ability to hit the ground running at a new job. Would deffinetly hurt his ability to do what needs to be done in year 1 form any program.

5- he is a prideful guy, and as many have mentioned on here before, he was hurt that he was passed over the first time for Red. In addition, Siena is bending over backwards to keep him and make him happy. Meanwhile, he looks like Syracuse’s 3,4,5th option. That in a way kind of hurts too, do I want to go back to a place that turned me down already and then I’m a backup plan? Ultimately it’s easier to say no when the offer isn’t actually in front of you. But it can be a thought, kind of a slap in the face while your current school be-loves you.

6- Jim talking in the media and spewing his name for Syracuse isn’t really appreciated by Gerry. It’s more of a distraction and a nuisance. Albany is 2 hours away and Jim has not been to one Siena game to support Gerry.

7- Jim hates Nate Oats and it’s no secret apparently. Part of the reason that Hodgson was blackballed by Jim.
You make Gerry sound incredibly thin-skinned and entitled, if he’s still irritated about over being passed over by a more experienced coach for the SU job and not being the #1 option this time. If that is somehow true, I guess that’s why JB likes him so much. Anyhow, I don’t know if I believe any of this.

Schertz walked into Gabriel's Gate a minute ago with a couple of suits. They appear to be reviewing some kind of paperwork.
You’d think Cuse would take him to a real man’s establishment like Elmo’s or Doc’s ;)

Other than that Gmac shouldn’t pay for Autry’s mistakes. He should be next coach.
Whether or not Gerry gets what he deserves here isn't the top priority. Gerry deserved to be hired over Red when we made our "must be in house" hire. But we can't make this hire based on what was unfair about the last one. This hire has to be based on the best coach we can get, and if Gerry is that, he deserves it. If not, maybe next time.

Exactly that has to factor in in the final decision. One would think…

Hertz is shaky potatoes financially we don’t want to bank the future on them for NIL…..

Hertz Global Holdings (HTZ)
is navigating significant financial strain, reporting a $747 million net loss for full-year 2025 and a $194 million net loss in Q4, with revenue declining 6.02% year-over-year. The company is actively cutting its electric vehicle (EV) fleet to reduce depreciation costs and improve cash flow by – million. Octus reports that elevated EV depreciation and operational costs have caused significant cash burn.
Yahoo Finance +4
Key Financial Metrics (2025):
  • Revenue (ttm): $\sim$$8.5 billion
  • Net Income (Full Year): -$747 million
  • Adjusted Corporate EBITDA (Q4): -$205 million, though improving by ~$150M year-over-year
  • Utilization (Q4): 78% (81% for the full year)
We need to go back to the Mullin times and pursue Enterprise. Like they say in Step Brothers….
"I'm just gonna to do what's sensible, I'm gonna file for unemployment. Then I'm gonna try to get a job at Enterprise Rent-A-Car, because they got an excellent corporate structure and they... they give you the tools to be your own boss".
Love this lol... I recently started a Substack doing investing analysis because I'm pretty good at it, so this speaks to me lol...

They sure did pick a bad time to cut back on their EV fleet!

Schertz might be the best offensive mind in college basketball. I love GMac but you must do your due diligence and try to get Schertz if possible. Fans would love Josh when the scoreboard hits triple digits multiple times a year.
Been saying this since last year. He’s been my #1 all along. But I felt Hodgson was a great second choice, his team played really well down the stretch, and it sounded like he wanted the Syracuse job. I’m still not clear about what wrong there.
