Coach Search Options after Autry

I trust JB from 15 years ago, not now. Decision alone should be BB. If he hires Gmac because he’s the best coach then fine, but otherwise he should butt out. If this mess is going on and I was Gmac why would I want this job if I know I’m not the top candidate. It’s a mess. If BB can’t make his own decisions I wouldn’t be surprised if he leaves in a year.
Agree on all of this though Gmac may still take the job if offered, but it wouldn’t surprise me if he’s not thrilled knowing he’s a fall back option. I can’t see an AD being comfortable not being able to actually make the decision on what could be the most important hire of his career. If he’d not allowed to I definitely don’t think he stays long which would be unfortunate he seems like the right guy to navigate the current landscape of college athletics

JAB of course wants to keep it in his family. That said, he has zero influence whether that happens or not. He can say whatever he wants to influence but the only difference in his voice vs yours or mine is that he has a direct number to dial. His say in this does not matter. We are going to get the best coach available and if that comes down to Gerry or similar, then Gerry will be offered the job bc Gerry knows what it’s like to win at Syracuse and what that means to us all. He may not be the best option but he has better intangibles than his peers other than JS. JAB can do whatever he wants however he wants to do it, but it doesn’t put the thumb on any scale.

If passed over again, I highly doubt he’d consider SU at anytime in the future. Them man’s not a side piece you can go to whenever you need him.
It depends on the context of how he's passed over. If they back out of a verbal agreement with him, that may be a deal breaker for the rest of his career, and is obviously a really bad look. If they get a candidate that is a hot commodity, it probably won't be a deal-breaker if Gerry is at a mid-major or a school like BC if and when he gets the call again. But yeah, they obviously need to tread carefully with how they're maintaining the relationship.

I can only react to what we've seen in his press conferences and what the SU administration has said, but I get the distinct impression that his number one job is to get the money train going at a high level. It looks more like a marketing job than actually being a singular decision maker when it comes to the athletic side. Probably an over simplification, but that's what it seems to me as an outsider.

The one thing I cannot stand that’s percolating through former players, Julie, etc - is the notion of keeping it in the family or that there’s a “Syracuse way”

There’s only been JAB and then we kept it in the family and it sucked.

There’s no “this is how we do it” … the one time we did it the way they are advocating, it got us here

I’m all in on getting the best available HC (and maybe that’s Gerry) but can we please dispense with the JAB ego propping
The Syracuse way hasn’t worked for the past ten years. Get over it and let’s move on.

Not sure who else is with me but I’ve reached the Groundhog Day stage with this crap. Time to check for when the ticker says a new coach has been hired and see what NIL will come with and follow how things go from there. There is nothing but a combination of rap battles and singing the blues in this thread now… ( if only as this would be much more fun than the reality).

The reality is that “keeping it in the family” led to Hopkins getting misled and ultimately leaving and Autry getting the HC gig when he was grossly underqualified for it.

The reality is that JAB didn’t really do a great job of developing a coaching tree to realistically lean on for this “in the family” concept. Outside of Pitino, which was 50 years ago, the guys that got to move on to head coaching were average to mediocre if at all. The one guy who he really groomed for a transition was screwed over by not wanting to let go and led him (Hopkins) to seek a power conference HC gig practically on the moon which led to his demise.

At the end of the day, it’s all about control and ego. And if he wanted to have that level of control post retirement, maybe he should have focused a little harder on succession planning.

We need the best candidate for the job. Period. Enough with the nonsense.

ZERO midmajors making it out of the first weekend. No Cinderella let alone 2. Pretty sure that's not a trend anyone wants but it's going to be trend anyway and only get worse and worse.

Point being these midmajor coaches need to move up at some point or else year after year they're going to run into 15 million dollar rosters and get smacked. Some of the midmajor coaches are that good to make up for a roster that costs 5 mil less but not 10 mil. Most can pull one upset but much further than that seems like it's going to get more and more improbable.

I'm feeling more and more confident that the stories of us being broke are false although we have along way to go. Hopefully when Schertz or even Martelli got home last night we gave them a call and made some promises on how much money we can put behind them. if not gmac is coming home and the people that wanted him better step up.

What are the tangible qualities that Gmac has that would make him a top candidate? I keep repeatedly hearing things like, “He BLEEDS Orange,” “He’ll work harder than anyone,” and “no one’s tougher.” It’s all a bunch of intangible nonsense. As a contrast, here’s a deep dive analysis on Schertz’s offense, which I’m sure many of you have seen or read.

Not sure why you replied to my post. I don't think he's a top candidate. I literally compared him to a safety school when applying to colleges. Not trying to be patronizing, but are you familiar with that concept? He's the guy that if we need a coach, I think we can safely say that we can go to him to take the job if we aim higher but strike out.

In terms of why he's my safety coach. I will readily admit I don't have a ton of knowledge about Gerry as a coach. I saw the Iona game that was on ESPN, the MAAC championship, and the Duke game. I liked what I saw when watching those games, but that's a small sample set.

What I do know that is "tangible" (to use your word) evidence is he had a vision for Siena and actually executed it. There are a lot of moving parts that come with that. He had to find the right players, the right staff, the right resources (e.g. NIL) and then actually go out on the court and put up wins. They were at 4 wins when he took the job, 2 years later, they are MAAC champions.

Having a vision and then succeeding at making that vision a reality is a tangible skill. I like that he has that and believe he has the capability to take that skill set and make it happen at Syracuse. So if it ends up that we go with our safety coach, I'll tune in and support.
