Coach Search Options after Autry

Then he should have made the tough decision and elevated Gerry over Red. There was no chance SU passed over Red when he was the #2 guy on the staff. Jim knew the culture of the school he worked for.
A few things that dont make it apples to apples:

1. Syracuse was clearly grossly unprepared for NIL. Gerry would not have won with Carlos and Lumpkin
2. Gerry is probably not as good of a coach at Syracuse without the experience he gained at Siena. Siena was night and day better this year than last. Partially personnel driven but also coaching wise.

Also in case you are all wondering. Peter Carey was just as bad in the MAAC as he was in the ACC.

I think we're talking about different things. The claim has been that Jim preferred Gerry to Red. If Jim did then he had to know that Syracuse University, in the spring of 2023, was not going to pass over Red to hire Gerry when Red was ahead of him on the staff hierarchy. Kent Syverud was not going to be the face of that decision.

Had nothing to do with NIL or coaching experience.

I would be so happy to be wrong about Gmac. We’ve all just been so frustrated with how the athletic department has allowed the basketball program to atrophy for a full decade, so many of us just don’t trust the-powers-that-be or their judgement. And that’s to say nothing of Boeheim’s meddling and undermining, starting with Hop. And here they are again choosing a demonstrably less qualified coach because he’s a Syracuse guy, instead of getting the best coach available.
I think it is fair to say that if they could make the money work for Shertz, they would have hired him.
They couldn't. I am a huge GMAC fan and am thrilled he has this chance but even I know they would have hired Shertz if they had the dollars he wanted. They couldn't so it is time to just move on.

Fair I was talking about the original choice of Gerry vs Red.

Something to watch for but I wonder if SL will try and make a play to join the BE amidst the conference carousel. Clearly they are going for it in terms of raising their hoops program via their ponying up money to keep him…
They should - they'd be a good fit as a Catholic school in a big city outside the BE footprint.

Interesting angle…can anyone think of a case where a head coach was fired and the replacement had been an assistant on that same staff? Rodney Terry and a few others were interims who ended up getting the job permanently, but that’s the closest I could find. I haven’t come across another example that fits. Not a knock on G-Mac whatsoever, just found it to be interesting.

Here are some numbers. In the past 5 years, NIL spending in men's college basketball has tripled from $314 million to $933 million. I would call that a fast moving number. The average ACC men's basketball NIL spending is $7 to $10 million. So, if the average increases 30% for next season, (is that conservative?) that gets you to $9 to $13 million for the average ACC roster. So, if the rumor is $12 million in NIL, that makes Syracuse competitive, but about the average.
I don’t know. NIL may be starting to plateau. We’ll see. I think a lot of these numbers are somewhat inflated.

Ugh...

But this reaction isn't shooting the messenger at all. Thank you for that report. Honestly, I think that's what I'm most afraid of.

Even if he's a better coach than red, doing the same thing and hoping for a different result.
Gmac will need to hire a young offensive mastermind as an assistant if he wants to succeed. He doesn’t have the analytics-based system or the chops to coach that side of the ball at a high level right now. RF, we made another self-inflicted wound by going with a family hire instead of the best coach available—which is what you warned against when the JB retirement became more imminent. Syracuse clearly has a dysfunctional administration and BOT, and Blair doesn’t have the clout yet to challenge these folks.

Goodbye

I know what would get this to 1,000 pages…… lol
Hey guys, I'd like to share a few thoughts on Dan Mullen, Adam Weitsman, football over/under win total, get some thoughts on the offense under Red, an update on Steve Angeli's health and debate NIL and what song should the football team run out to... Andddd go.

Edit: let's get some uniform discourse as well.

I think GMAC would probably disagree with you. Ben Lee is that guy on his current staff.
