Coaches on Hot Seat

Hope you are right.. My only worry is a middling SEC or big state school comes knocking to him with NIL that dwarfs ours to the levels that he simply can't say no...

Assuming he won't get a better offer could be a flawed perspective. You know his agent will be trying to get a bidding war going for sure (whether legit or manufactured.)
If Hodgson truly sees Syracuse as his destination and where he wants to build his legacy. As long as we can guarantee him the resources position that Autry already has today and I'm sure especially in the beginning they will go in even more to kickstart it, that would be enough to be at the top 3rd of the league and comfortably in the NCAAT, the rest will be taken care of performing to that level. Because if we actually performed to the level of investment, the University will be making more money from the program and have the ability to reinvest in program to only further regain the position that Syracuse used to have in the glory days. Again, the expectation with this next hire should be a product that will fill the dome again and overall reenergize the program at the grassroots level. A product that produces an NCAAT level squad year in and year out. Then in 10 years you reevaluate if we still haven't gotten to the Elite 8 and beyond level of the tournament. At that point, if we are consistently going to the tournament, you have a much more engaged fan base and support than what we have seen in a while now. Then you see if Hodgson can get you to the biggest stage and that is the final four and competing and winning national championships. When UConn hired Hurley they wanted to just get energy back into the program and going to the tournament regularly, Hurley over performed and now they are back to their glory days and arguably stronger. If Hodgson can get us to a similar glory day level and stronger, absolutely amazing and perfect scenario, but the real expectation should be getting back to where we are filling the dome and going to the tournament every year for the first decade. Other schools may have more money overall, but there basketball programs can't justify the level of investment that Syracuse can at it's strongest state for basketball because they don't have the ability to generate the revenue that Syracuse can for basketball. And that may make you think that hurts football investment and perhaps it does, but as long as we don't continue the football product that was put out once we lost Angeli, Fran has the coldest seat possible as far as I'm concerned. With the way he recruits, there is not many people out there that has Syracuse at a higher ceiling leading the football program with our resource level.

Ok so let’s play it out then. Will we pay our next hoops coach 3.25 million with a similar contract as Odom and will that new coach be given the same nil as Virginia to work with? Let’s get on the record. I say no, what do you say?
I think we’d pay at least 3 million depending on the guy. The AD knows the going rate for a top coach. Btw, JB was making well over $2 million (I believe close to $3 million) even in his later years.

Also, just looked up the buyout on Hodgson...

His buyout at USF this year is $2 million...

I guess this is the real question mark...

Kent leaving, in part, because he's lost the ability to "re-allocate" athletics revenue to his own school pet projects... and with attendance in the crapper with bball, that revenue is in a bad place...

Can you imagine the reaction in Syracuse if the next guy isn’t in the NCAAs in his first two seasons? It’s a big part of why I think ours fans overrate this job. It looks like a low opportunity for success, high likelihood of being a career killer job right now.
“High likelihood of being a career killer job.” Absolute classic comment. Honestly, what are you even doing here?

So far - Iowa, Indiana, nova, nc st, Virginia in.
Texas and Miami are considered “bubble” teams.

you’re using one of the worst rated bracketologist in the game. According to bracket matrix Auburn, Iowa, Indiana, Villanova, NC state, A&M, and Virginia are on every single bracket. Miami and Texas are on 103/113 brackets. So as of right now 9 of 15 first year p5 coaches have their teams projected in the field.

Red went 14-19 in year 2 and still got a 3rd season. This isn't Kentucky

So the coach will get a third year while having to recruit/buy players with everyone knowing he’s on the hot seat, and with this message board openly freaking out he wasn’t fired, and the local and national media reporting he’s doomed.

Doesn’t matter he’ll get a lame duck third year - the bigger issue is that fan expectations will make it nearly impossible to turn things around from that slow start.

That’s going to be the case everywhere. At what school is 14-19 acceptable in year 2. Red has been so bad it warps people’s minds what average coaching even looks like.

OK, so you are saying to go with a hungry, lower mid-major type HC without big program experience or a career assistant looking for an HC break??
exactly . like jim boeheim was . but one who knows when to leave.

well red never built a winner. if fact he rode shot gun while we got worse.
and looks like red ain't gonna have no say in leavin' . hopefully his tenure will be fondly viewed here has a stepping stone to our next great coach. can't really blame red for breaking something that was already broken can we ? well ...some can and do .

In the past, I've heard that coaches liked schools that the fans prioritize their sport. So a basketball coach prefers a basketball school instead of playing second fiddle to football. Was that overblown, does the dollar amount these days kill that, or is it still a factor?

Other than Kentucky, the SEC football is king. And the SEC has done well with coaches.

I think we can be pretty delusional. How many first year coaches get their teams into the NCAA’s their first year? Last year major universities like Miami, Fla St, Maryland, Indiana, Utah, Texas, Xavier, Villanova, Auburn, Iowa, NC St, Virginia and W Virginia all hired new coaches. What are the odds that all these programs with new coaches make the NCAA’s in their first year?
6 with the potential of 3 more.
