Were Saban and Coughlin considered big losses at the time or just in retrospect?

Did they make lateral moves to higher profile schools like White and Rogers or did they take jobs that allowed them to move into a role of higher responsibility like Lewis?
No one (at least among the fanbase) knew much about Saban. I doubt that many in the coaching profession had an inkling of where his career was headed. He moved on to WVa, which was probably a lateral move.

Coughlin was considered a loss, probably in part because he was an alum who had been on the staff for several years (as opposed to Saban's one-year stint). Coughlin took a step back, going from SU's OC to QB coach at BC. But Coach Mac pretty much cleaned house when he took over.

Whatever else he did or didn't do, Frank Maloney hired some good assistants.
