Coleman is one major prospect I don't really have a good grasp on. I always missed him on tv and being out of town dosn't help. I have heard the poor man's Sullinger comparisons as well as Sean May. My question is how is he on the boards? Does he really go after them and how physical a player is he? I am very excited to get a local stud like him and keep him home. I guess my fear is a Watkins-like scenario. A guy who was a consensus top 15 guy then slipped late junior/senior year due to mostly motivation. There must be reasons however that Coleman was the number one recruit nationally for awhile. I really want to start seeing the SU centers (I think he's an obvious 5) dominate on the glass. This was one area that drived me nuts about Watkins and Arinze. They didn't really have a great knack for rebounding, imo. Any posts regarding his strengths/weaknesses would be much appreciated!

He is very physical, knows how to use his big body and his strength is rebounding.

As to that, he's old for his age, so when he was a 6'8" sophomore, he looked all-world. As other kids grew and improved, Coleman had reached a physical plateau, so he was surpassed by a few people in the ratings.

As to the rebounding, I don't think he's a Jackson/Fair/Anthony/Harris type of guy who aggressively goes after every missed shot like it's his. I don't know that he's as soft as Mookie Watkins, though (which is good, because Mookie at least had terrific size to make up for his sort of laid-back approach).

This will be an interesting get for Syracuse - I don't remember a time when we've had a 5 who is so physically suited to boxing out.

Not only what Bees said but he is a smart "basketball player". Mookie was a great athlete that became a decent basketball player by his junior year, great presence by his senior year on D, etc. However, DC has basketball skills like Bees said. I knew he was legit D1 his frosh year when early in the season, he had great position on D, pulled down a great board and threw an outlet about 70 feet for an easy score. I remember posting that as a frosh in HS, he was better than our bigs at the time at outlets.

The comparison I see is Dejaun Blair and I think he is the perfect SU guy because he doesn't have the stuff NBA guys look for right away (they don't want 6'8" centers with a top 10 pick), but will dominate in college. Though, he is a pro, for sure. JD's coach doesn't say this stuff lightly but he talks about him as an NBA guy frequently.

His arms are really long, too.
No they are not...

That kid in green looks like he's got some hops for a little guy.

You don't remember Arinze ???

I think Blair was shorter than Coleman, but Blair had a nasty streak and was a beast on the boards. If Coleman can develop that type of attitude and motor, he will be a very very good player. He's not that player right now, but could be with a lot of hard work. First thing he's got to do is lose about 20 pounds.

Trouble is, he was an average rebounder. And Coleman's quite a bit larger. I chose my words poorly - better would be to have a guy who's an instinctive rebounder and has the size to box out. Coleman's got potential to be just that.
